Portugal? Why? After both the quaters this year and two years ago, I could never forgive them.

Of all the teams in the semi-finals, I wanted Italy to win, because of those four teams I loathed Italy least. So I'm quite happy.

I feel sorry for Zidane though, what a way to end such a fantastic international career. He'll be made into a hate figure now like Beckham was, only worse knowing what the french are like.

Penalties is such a bad way to end a competition though.

It really is a shame for him -- he'd come out of retirement for one last stand, and got to thw World Cup final, scored, and looked in a good position to win it -- but it's pretty hard to feel sorry for him. I mean, he can't even begin to blame anyone but himself, and it really doesn't look like he can claim "heat of the moment" either.

Your players are all intenational swimming champions.

Most of the teams in the World cup these days dive, but the endemic diving in your team is horrific. It is cheating, and I'm glad England haven't stooped to that level.

It was a effective tactic though. That Italian blatantly said something offensive to him, probably about his mother, knowing that the short-fused Zidane would hit him and get himself sent off.

I've seen similar things done in Rugby matches, if the guy's on your team you need to be very quick to step in to stop himself getting into trouble.

No, it doesn't.

He didn't lash out with his arm or something, did he? He ran three paces forward, turned, bent down and charged him.

MtlAngelus
9 Jul 2006, 22:48
Zidane didn't just attack him for no reason, Materazzi said something, Zidane turned around and then attacked.
And, if something he said deemed that reaction from Zidane, it must have been something bad.

AndrewTaylor
9 Jul 2006, 22:51
Oh, I'm sure all that's true, don't get me wrong. But it's no excuse.

MtlAngelus

Yeah, but Zidane is as hot headed as it can get, and insulting him to that point just isn't fair play.
edit: that said, players should also get admonished for insulting behaviour.

... You just don't understand me. It's not an excuse to attack the player, but it's a valid reason to deem Materazzi as a bad player, he obviously did it to get Zizou out of the game, and that's NOT fair play.

That's certainly true.

But of all the problems in football I think we should go after the divers, the cheats and the violent before we start trying to make the game polite.

Yes, FIFA shoud really allow referees to watch replays on a portable tv, that would like, solve 90% of the problems.

The final ended in penaltys. What a pity. Penaltys are, for me, a bad way to know who is the winner. There is almost no tactic and the game is reduced to two players. Its true, that after 120 mins the players cannot move and there must be a winning team, but its not fair.

Oh, and Im happy that Italy won :)

Anyone in the public light, especially a football player should be weary of what they say and do as the media will do their best to make the situation explode. You could be arrested for attacking people in the streets like they do on football pitches, I don't see why being on a pitch makes it any different. Both Rooney and Zidane. Either way, they both made their choice to get themselves sent off. I hope both reflect and feel like they lost their country the world cup. I'm not bothered about football myself but from what I saw of the world cup it was a free kick every minute. If these "professional" players repeatedly break the rules of the game with a slap on the wrist, surely that just sends a message to them that it's allowed. Personally I think if you stamp on another person, you should spend the night in a prison cell. I also don't think he has the right to represent our country if he's just going to attack people.

After that, though, Zidane kept his cool. As he was walking away, Matarazzi said something to him that set him off.

Although Zidane saw a red card he was the man of the world cup and I think he got that title rightly.
Sad... Another great football player goes.

I don't think Rooney's original foul was even a yellow card, let along a red. The guy was trying to hold his foot back with his feet, Rooney tried to shake it off and lost his footing a bit and his foot landed in that most unfortunate of places.

The pushing Ronaldo was enough to get him sent off, but that isn't what they said it was for. They are, in fact, negociating(omg spelling??) on that for the next world cup.

And Zidane: WTF? That was SO uncalled for!
They have them in Rugby, and it makes the game much fairer. God knows why football's held out so long on this issue.

Actually, he pinched Zidane's nipple. Close enoughI didn't see that first time I saw it, just Mazzerati saying something to him.

Poor Zidane. The French are terrible, if their team plays badly they'll start booing them, and that is while he match is still taking place. Remember how much Beckham was hated in 98? This will be so much worse, as they will have perceived him to have lost them the tournament.

In reality, if France still hadn't scored at the end, and even if he hadn't gone off they were unlikely to, he always takes the last penalty so it wouldn't have made any difference.

I thought it was a bit low down for that. The expression the Italian wore wasn't quite right for insulting either. I just think Zidane was angry at his failed attempt for a goal (which was good) and got angry at the fact Matarazzi held him back with his arm.

Desipite the fact the French team is better, I really did not want them to win. I was amazed Italy got as far as they did.

Oh yes, I nearly forgot...

Curse you Ricardo!

OK, maybe that was a little much.

I dislike Rooney, but I still stand that the guy was grabbing his leg with his feet, which is also a foul, if not bloody irritating.

I could have completely understood the sending off for the shove, but that wasn't what they said it was for, and I don't think the other incident was entirely as bad as it looked.

Well, we know what he said now:

"An ugly death to you and your family"

and "go f*ck yourself"

I thought it was the Italian goal keeper who told the ref. The commentators said something about the goal keeper leaving the goal during play to talk to the ref.

Not his only ever, but he is still incredible.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Now, resenting Ronaldo is fine, I did before the England match, as he's a whining, cheating diver, but wht you just said smacks of your being an git who can't take losing.

I must admit I had some reservations about an Argie ref reffing a match with another diego country versus England, given the history; and I disagreed with a lot of the disicions he made, especialy concerning the diving, but I don't think he set out to send Rooney off. Rooney brought it on himself.

Now go away and come back when you have a sensible point to make.

C. Ronaldo better be really careful when he comes back to Manchester United. I mean, i read a news story about a British guy who castrated his horse because it was named ronaldo. Anyway, Zidane was really good, but I kinda wanted Canavaro to win it. He played really well throughout the cup, and if it weren't for him, France would have probably scored a couple goals.

But yeah, Portugal would have owned either team at penalties. But I think Petit should have been man of the match in the 3rd place game. He helped the germans a lot.

Now, on a more than loosly related topic. Several of the major italian clubs are being penialised, down leagues, fines, point reductions and the like; and that will have dire effects on italian football.

Is it likely we'll ever see Italy win the cup again?

Well, it'll mean that a lot of Italian players might leave Italy for club play, but I don't see it being that much of an obstacle. I suppose we'll see the effects at Euro 2008.
