(only i cant i got stupid Dell pc)?? You can change it anyway, just voids the warrenty.

I'm sticking with the PC. More games, more options, better value for money etc. If I was going to get a console though, it'd be either the Wii or the Xbox.

Wii. I was skeptical I admit, but between the PS3 announcements, and watching Nitendo's press conference, I'm convinced. I'm going with Wii. It's probably the only one of the three I could afford anyway.

I subit to you the following:

Pikmin. Smash Brothers. Mario Versus Donkey Kong. Putting four controller ports on the N64 as standard unlike the PSX and the PS2 which had but two. The Nintendo DS. Luigi's Mansion.

Nintendo do things right all the time. People just selectively ignore them.

That is not a reason. That is Ken Kutaragi's latest maniacal rant. The man's an idiot. Don't listen to him. Didn't we learn that from the whole "I believe [the PSP is] the most beautiful thing in the world!" debacle?

Like its predecessors, PS3 will also offer brand new experiences, he continued: "Things like next-generation graphics and various services via the network. And, as with the PS and PS2, we believe people who like games will, without question, purchase it."Yeah, and then there's the Wii, which not only offers great graphics, but things which actually MAKE a new gaming experience

I'm either getting a Wii or a 360, I have little to no interest in most PS3 games so far, plus it's just far too 'mainstream' for my liking. Also, I support old-school, cartoonish pre-current gen games, and Wii's full of those while 360 has Xbox arcade, which sounds pretty good. Still, with all the third party support, not to mention me being a Nintendo fanboy at heart, I got my bets on the Wii right now.

AndrewTaylor

It does sound pretty good, but it's going to have to be a lot better than "pretty good" to prise me and my friends away from spending all day downloading old games to the Wii.

...which have chances of having stupidly large prices. I mean, a GBA port of the original Zelda was one of 2003's biggest releases for Nintendo, and it was around $20 IIRC.

AndrewTaylor
14 May 2006, 22:49
Given how much it costs to make a GameBoy cartridge compared to the cost of doing a download, and given that they won't need to do any conversion to get it running on the Wii, I really can't imagine anyone being expected to pay as much as $20. (Although given the value of a dollar these days...)

Besides, the money you'd save getting a Wii instead of a PS3 you could probably buy at least fifteen $20 games.

In some interview, I heard that Nintendo was thinking about different ways for consumers to pay for games on the catalogue, like buying, renting, and subscription.
I really, really, really hope they don't choose subscription. That's the entire reason why things like Gametap don't appeal to me.

They're also illegal. They're generally tolerated because companies don't make any money from their old games, but that's no longer the case so I wouldn't advise you to download illegal copies of Nintendo games in the future.

And before you say anything stupid, it is illegal if you owned the cartridge, and it is illegal if you delete it with 24 hours.

Do you enjoy imposing your opinions on people, and slagging them off?
Well, now, in fairness, Xinos was asking for that. Nintendo are the only console manufacturer who are not regularly sued for grossly illegal and/or unethical business practices and so he decides that you can't trust them because they didn't announce the price of their console. I mean, what possible logical connection is there between someone's trustworthiness and the announcement of their prices? He didn't even make a promise and he's effectively just been accused of breaking it. Then Xinos describes Myamoto as "a brainless tard", despite the fact that he and Hiroshi Yamuchi, more or less on their own, turned a small Japanese playing card company into a hugely successful entertainment empire in just a few years. If he didn't want to be called a cretin he should have posted something less cretinous. I'm not going to watch him post utter rubbish like that and not say anything. People might think he's convinced me if I did that.

And when told that downloading ROMs is illegal people invariably point out that it's not illegal if you own the game already or if you delete it within 24 hours, both of which are lies made up by ROM downloading sites designed to keep them out of trouble. I've taken to including that information up front to stop people "correcting" me. It's not "imposing my opinions", it's imposing facts. You don't get to have an opinion about what is and is not illegal.

And I've known M3ntal for years. I think we've passed the point now where we need to wrap our opinions in disclaimers like "I think that", or "IMHO" to stop ourselves arguing about them, thanks.

You know, I have no problem at all with people having whatever opinions they happen to hold. That's really not a problem. I'm quite happy to agree to disagree with people because a lot of people are very different from each other, and value different things, and as such things like the overall quality of an object or person or company or whatever is ultimately entirely subjective, because we each have our own criteria by which to judge them. But there's a difference between carefully judging someone by your own criteria that I happen to disagree with and simply spouting off the first rubbish that comes into your head and then getting angry when people point out, albeit bluntly, that it's rubbish.

Example: where I called you a cretin I had a paragraph long justification at my disposal, and you called Shigeru Myamoto is a "brainless 'tard ... you can't trust" with nothing to back it up (as far as you've let slip) aside from the arbitrary and, might I point out, entirely baseless assertion that he "can't even remember the price" of the Wii.

If you're going to say something like that about one of the most respected people in the industry then I would reccomend that you have a slightly better justification than something you made up, because it's not only me that will call you on it, and to be perfectly frank it's bordering on trolling. I don't like people trolling, because it tends to generate a lot of work and clog my email with post reports.

I'm not going to say any more on this. If you think I'm flaming you then report the post and let the other mods decide. If you want to bicker with me further, do it in a PM or email -- this thread is getting way out of hand and so I think we should draw a line under this, at least here.

I'm going to bed. I've had enough of this. You can sleep on the sofa tonight.

You say I can't say something bad about such a respected guy, but you can just call whoever at Sony whatever you want since you don't respect him.

Your blaming him for praising the PSP. Well guess what, IT'S HIS JOB.
It's not nessisarily his opinion that the PSP is the most beatiful thing in the world. It is obviously and overstatement. He couldn't just go up there and say he thought it was mediocre looking now could he.

Like when he shouts Riiidge Raaacer. That's not him, it's in his speach. He was suposed to get the crowed going but failed. Does that make him an idiot?

Your blaming him for praising the PSP. Well guess what, IT'S HIS JOB.
It's not that he praised it; that's fair game. It's that he praised it in such a spectacularly arrogant and idiotic way. He said the PSP is the most beautiful thing in the world. He said that the fact that one of the buttons didn't work was "just something [people] would have to get used to". He said there had not been a mistake -- which, it later turned out, wasn't true. He lies, and he's not even subtle about it. The man's opinion and his word are worth nothing. And then he comes out and says "we don't want you to think of [the price of the PS3] in terms of game machines", presumably because when considered "in terms of game machines" the first thing that you notice is that it's three hundred dollars more than what you would really want to pay for a games machine. All the things he said in that article are just trying to distract from the fact that while $600 might be a reasonable price for a PS3 taken in isolation, it isn't in isolation. It's competing with two other consoles which cost a lot less and do the same thing. In that context, which is to say, the actual context of real life, it's expensive, and simply saying that it isn't doesn't change that fact. He might be respected to some, but as far as I was aware he's a laughing stock.

If I want to call him an idiot, I will, and I'll feel not a shred of guilt about it. Frankly, I think I was lenient in assuming he hadn't had any more maniacal rants since then.

Quick question: what would you do if you had to make a speech to make people want to get the overpriced PS3?
I'd point out that it plays Blu-ray DVDs, and I think I would say that it is expensive because it is not being subsidised by the games, which means that people who buy lots of games aren't being made to subsidise people who don't buy many, which is fairer for everybody. Well, that's what I'd say if I had any reason to suppose it was true. If the PS3's games are no cheaper than those on other consoles, as seems likely, I'd probably keep my big mouth shut.

But to be honest if I was in charge I'd have fired him long before the price was announced, for damaging my company's image with his public lunacy.
