View Full Version : Thread O' Music

Well, there's a movie thread, so why not a music thread? Post any reviews of anything musical in here, from electric guitars to some random album which no-one has ever heard of. I'll start off with -
Absolution - Muse 4/5
Great album, very different to a lot of rock music out tofay, as it's a lot more piano based than guitar. The lyrics are very dark, so, you probably won't like it if you're a very happy person who only likes happy stuff :p It's starts off on the thunderous Apocalypse Please, which is obviously rather apocalyptic, and ends on Ruled By Secrecy, which I can't seem to remember atm :p
Strongest tracks on the album - Hysteria, Time is Running Out, Thoughts of a Dying Atheist and Stockholm Syndrome. And the rest are still great :p
Star Worms

Personally I think Apocalypse Please is a great track on the album too.

"Before They Sold Out" - Bored With Cereal
A little known indie band from Ireland's demo album,. which is very credible and very enjoyable, featuring a Dead Kennedy's cover, with the remainder of the album being band-written songs. An up-and-coming punk rock band to wathc out for.

Ooooooh Dead Kennedys cover eh? Which one?
And I would just like to ask, are they punk rock or "punk rock"? :p (Punk rock= stuff like The Clash, 999, Wire and The Ramones, "punk rock" is basically anything out today claiming to be punk :p)
Justin Timberlake / Justified

One of my favourite albums. His voice is good listening to, the music is varieted and stylish ... Great!

Disturbed - Ten Thousand Fists (2005)
A surprisingly good album. Unlike The Sickness and Believe, it's more well-rounded, as if they've finally found what they're after. Despite a couple of worse-off songs, the albums pretty good all around.
4/5
Trivium - Ascendancy (2005)
Most definately not for those whose idea of heavy rock music is Greenday (read: emos and retards), this is pretty loud. Regardless of this, it is a fine album, with only one possibly weak song (minus the intro song, of course). It manages to achieve the level where regardless of it's heavy nature, it never reaches abrasive and god-awful, a flaw which can occur in bands such as these. Though it won't be for everybody, I'd definately recommend it; Strongest tracks on the album: Gunshot to the Head of Trepidation; Pull Harder on the Strings of Your Martyr; Like Light to the Flies; Ascendancy.

Arctic Monkeys - Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not
5/5
If you just heard this album, you'd think that it wasn't their first, as it is perfect in almost every way. Most of the songs are made purely of raw energy, and the rest are still just great. They sing about problems on the street, like chavs and prostitutes, and it basically rocks :p
Strongest Tracks - All of them :p
I'm into The Clash (again) at the moment.
And Fugazi.
And The Jazz June.
And Biffy Clyro.
And Mclusky.

It's Pre-Sell Out Green Day punk. Not any McFly-like crud. Proper Stuff. The cover was "Holiday in Cambodia"

First Impressions of Earth - The Strokes
4.5/5
Bought at the same time as the Arctic Monkeys album. At first I prefered the Monkeys, but now this is the CD I'm listening to more. Terrific, very Strokes-ey start with You Only Live Once, and great end on Red Light, a song which has the same sort of sound as 12:51. Halfway through the album, the very...weird Ask Me Anything comes on. I didn't really like it at first, but it's growing on me. Just before that, Vision of Division has an excellent Spanish sounding guitar solo, which just appears to pop out of no-where. Oh and there's the great single Juicebox on it too :p
Strongest tracks - All of them, except Ask Me Anything, Evening Sun and Killing Lies. And maybe Fear of Sleep. They're still good though :p

Since when has Jamie Cullum been Jazz?
Jamie Cullum was Jazz right up until he tried to cover a Cure song. That is punishable by death. The Cure's songs are perfect as they are, and people like Katie Melua should leave them alone.

I can't stand Jamie Cullum... He's an OK pianist until he gets up off the stool... and turns his piano into a drumkit. Pianos should be treated with respect and should be played as they were initially intended. Some (like 1 or 2) were built at the turn of last century as 'drumkits', with a special hammer that hit against the soundboard when you pressed a pedal.
For the record, I am a pianist, and a blues/jazz and classical fan (and a bit of Queen just for good measure :D)
My iTunes library consists mainly of Jools Holland and Classical music, but I've thrown some Queen in for good measure, simply because Freddie Mercury wrote some great piano backings.

Yeah, that's true. I saw one of his concerts on TV, and it was like he was going completely mad. He bashed the keys on the piano so hard that I was amazed that the piano didn't brake down.

I'm addicted punk music at the moment and since punk seems to mean nothing in this day and age, I'm listening to old punk bands. At the moment I'm addicted to the Dead Kennedys for some reason.
Edit: With regards to Blob's little song there, its pretty darn good sounds professional. Msn me when you've written the lyrics.

I think they were the first major grunge type band, with the mosh pits and the drunkardness. I like some of their songs, but I agree I don't understand what was so great about them. Maybe they were made more famous because Mr Cobain committed suicide. But then again they were popular when they first appeared. It's probably down to that whole rebellious type thing they had going.

Why don't people pay more attention to real punk if that's the case? They had much fiercer mosh pits and drunkardness, and were a lot more rebellious. I mean, at Dead Kennedys concerts, people were basically fighting, jumping up on stage etc. And at the 100 Club Punk Festival, Sid Vicious threw a glass which smashed and the shards went into a girls eye!

Myes, never noticed this thread before... i bet someone hide it for me so i cant post Metallica... But haha! too bad!
...And Justice For All - Metallica (1988)
5/5! This is truly the best album they did. I just love the strong lyrics and fast drumming on this album. It's also their first album with Jason Newsted. An avarage bassist. Before him they had Cliff Burton, the best bassist ever (It's true!). Jason plays a bit too quiet. You can barely hear him. But that changed in the Black Album. Exept for the Bass this album is just Great. Every song on this Album is great just great. yay for Metallica.

excuse me while I promote my favorite CD on this thread I've somehow managed to miss somewhere along the line.
for anyone who likes hard rock, but wants something slightly more mellow than the average hard rock, the album is absolutely awesome. if you like staind, you must own this one. from fast and heavy to soft and slow, Chapter V's got it covered. personally, I think it's the best CD from staind so far, and definitely worth giving a listen to.
