Whats about landscape editor?
Team17 thinks it would be too requiring of proffesional skill to create maps in 3D with a map editor, so they decided not to make it. Thatīs about it:(

It is very a pity that it is not present while. I hope that it will appear. At me it is a lot of ideas. I think that at other people too. Popularity of a game is a presence of constant updatings. Worms simply demand presence of the editor.

there is a 3rd party land editor in development, but nobody knows when it will get finished.

Itīs already released at the Dream17 forums, at Fan-Stuff, but itīs not for Worms 4, itīs for Worms 3D.
EDIT: And itīs also a very rough version, says K^2.

exactly what i was reffering to. it is unfinished, though. it should work on w4, by the way. the map format for the two is nearly identical.

ooh can worms 3d maps work on w4?...i never tried it b4

quakerworm
31 Dec 2005, 06:32
they should. try replacing one of the w4 maps with a w3d map. w4 uses hight maps, but they are stored in a separate .xan file. i'm not sure if you can simply rename the .xan file to remove it, or if you would have to get a blank height map. if you need a blank height map, send me a pm.

so i replace to .hmp and the .xan with the .xom?

quakerworm
2 Jan 2006, 04:12
yes. for example, lets say you want to replace the w4 joustaboutit map with the w3d beanstalk map. first you rename the multi_joustaboutit.xan into something like multi_joustaboutit_orig.xan. then you copy the beanstalk.xom from w3d maps folder to w4 maps folder and then rename it into multi_joustaboutit.xan. now, i am not sure if you can simply remove the height map. if you can, try renaming multi_joustaboutit.hmp into multi_joustaboutit_orig.hmp. if that causes a crash, then you have to keep the height map. if it reallly gets in the way, you can try to find a map that doesn't have a .hmp file with it, or pm me, and i will send you a blank .hmp file.

Team17 thinks it would be too requiring of proffesional skill to create maps in 3D with a map editor, so they decided not to make it. That's about it :(
That's just stupid, loads of 3D multiplayer games come with map editors, and loads of good quality maps are made with them by community members... e.g. counterstrike and unreal tournament. That sounds particularly condescending of Team17 - do they think that no one in their community could possibly have the skill required to create maps? They think they're all that much smarter than us, huh?

I preordered W3D trusting T17's promise that they'd release a terrain editor for download seperately. They lied and they let me down. They lied to all of us and they let us all down. I feel betrayed. I will never buy a 3D worms game again (at least not for more than Ģ5) until they come through on that promise and make a terrain editor.

go to dream17.co.uk, then to their forums, and the thread about map editor is somewhere in the fan stuff section.

There doesn't seem to be anybody making a 3rd party landscape generator for W4. The one K^2 is/was making seems to have been W3D related. Converting W3D maps to W4 also doesn't seem to work properly.

there is no difference between w3d and w4 maps other than the fact that some w4 entities are not supported by w3d and cause a crash. you can use minusone converter to strip all entities from the map, making it fully w3d/w4 compatible.

Have you tested and succeeded in converting a w3d map to w4?

fine, fine. direct link to the thread:

no. i don't have the full version of w4, and demo doesn't run even if you replace a map with another w4 map. perhaps, a checksum is used to prevent other maps from running.

if you have the full version of w4, try replacing one of the w4 maps with a w3d map. if you don't have a w3d map, try running a w4 map through minusone converter. the w4 maps processed with minusone have been confirmed to run on w3d.

I tried to W3D-W4M a map, but it didnīt work :(

can you be more specific? did you try a w3d map in w4? if so, and it didn't work, can you try re-naming the w3d map into something.xan and running it by minusone converter. it will remove all entities (smoke generators, patches of grass, various 3d models, etc.) to make it more compatible. then replace a w4 map with the .xom file that you got out of the minusone.

A well, I wonīt bother, itīs too much work:p
But can anyone confirm it does work and it isnīt just a rumor? :p

well, i am just speculating based on my experience with the files. i can't find anything that would prevent w3d files from running under w4, but i could have missed something.

Etho
29 Jan 2006, 07:41
It is just a theory. Everyone who has attempted the conversion has failed. (but I don't think they had very much computer smarts ;) )

A problem with it is it would require you to sacrifice one of your existing worms 4 maps for the worms 3 one. I don't think it would work online, unless perhaps the people you are playing did the exact same thing as you.

quakerworm

adding a map isn't all that difficult. the map list is in one of the .xom files. adding another map to the list is just a matter of adding another CTNR block to it.

but yes, it will almost certainly not work on-line. if you simply replace one of the maps, it will cause a de-sync error. there is allways a way to make the game download extra resources, but it would probably require a custom program running in the background. unless, of course, there allready is some hidden support for downloading maps which simply needs to be re-enabled.

the program is incomplete, so it is only posted on the forum. go to the dream17's forums, there find a fan stuff section, and there you should be able to find an early version of the map editor.

Actually, to be clear, it also works for Worms 4. But yes, it is terribly hard to use, and yet you can do crazy stuff.
