If you haven't got any money get The Gimp (http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/stable.html) as it's free... It's a bit more fiddly than flash, Paint Shop Pro ect. but then again its free, it's also only about 10 mb download size :)

The GIMP is a set of brushes. I honestly can't see how you can find that complicated, it's incredibly easy to pick up and use.

I might actually just give up fanart for now. I am only 9 after all. I know some of my art is better than most of the 12-year-old-n00bs, but it'll be much better when I grow up more. If I come up with a great thing which I think I could submit, I will.

well the half-life 2 pic looks good... but i suggest you read all the sticky's with drawing guides on this forum. it helps you a lot with he shape :p

Nah, I'd say you should stick at it.
And learn to change how thick the lines are. That way, it wont just look like it has wrinkles.

And only put shake lines outside the worm. Don't put them around the eyes.

And there isn't a right shape. At all. It's YOUR shape. It's your style. It doesn't have to be the same as everyone else's. It can be fat, skinny, cute, evil, anything. Just try to make it good.

That animation is rather good.
But please, your worms need alot of work. Mainly on the shape of the head.
