View Full Version : Cave Story - A really really good free game

This game is kind of a throwback to the NES era in terms of graphics and sound -- picture really good NES graphics with a lot more particles and colors and smoother animation, and that's pretty much what you'll get.

Everything about this game is excellent. The gameplay is great, the weapons are great, the story is great, the characters are great, the everything is great. Seriously, give it a try.

And for all the greatness and depth it offers, it's barely over a megabyte in size.

And if any of you determined, tenacious players want help on getting the best ending, let me know. ;)

Wow. Isn't this a kick in the shins. I can't even post about a game without something going screwy.

Hmmm? I meant the filename of the webpage. "doukutsu". I wrote it in Japanese. Two characters. They have a clever meaning considering the name of the game.

So your post was fine. And it was my incredibly short post that didn't make any sense that confused you. Apologies.

I'm really lost. I came out of the final cave went onto the balcony and reached the end of it and it said on a sign "That's all folks!" Is that the end? Where's the doctor? Where's the core? I'm really lost.

Spoilers 'n Stuff

This details EVERY critical step you need to do to have a shot at the best ending, so I recommend highlighting them one by one unless you want it all spoiled at once.

OPTIONAL: When Curly offers to swap her machinegun for your Polar Star, decline. When you get to the bug-filled shop in the Labyrinth, DON'T talk to the bug behind the counter (he gives you a slightly more powerful weapon, but it's not that good for reaching the extra ending). Instead you'll need to revisit the hermit gunsmith you took the gun from in the first place (via the top left corner of the Mimiga Village; if you follow all the steps to get the best ending, it should become self-evident when it's possible to get back up there) to get the Spur, the best gun in the game by a long shot.

1. You need to ignore Booster when he's teleported into the Labyrinth. Yes, that means you need to make your way through the rest of that hellhole without the jetpack.

2. Before talking to Curly to initiate the battle with the Core, check the lower-right corner of the room.

3. When the area becomes flooded, use the grappling hook to take her with you.

4. About halfway through the water passage, stop at the little room with the save point. Rest to put Curly on the bed. Read the bookcases to find how to drain water from robots. Drain the water from Curly.

5. Take Curly with you. (You'll be inevitably separated at the end of the water tunnel; don't worry.)

6. Go back to the teleporter room to meet Booster and get the Booster v2.0. (This is when you'll want to go back and visit the hermit gunsmith.)

7. When you reach the Plantation, check out that area with the bed in the lower right where Cthulthu was before. Talk to him. Talk to Curly. Talk to Cthulthu again.

8. Go back to the graveyard in the Mimiga Village (via whichever method you prefer) and talk to the mushroom until he gives you the mushroom badge.

9. Examine the badge. Talk to the mushroom again.

OPTIONAL: If you look very closely around the bottom level of the graveyard, you'll find a little man. If you've talked to his wife (hidden in a hard-to-reach spot on the Outer Wall), he'll ask you to take him back home. In exchange, you'll have the option of trading the Blade for the Nemesis, which is a powerful gun that gets less powerful as it levels up. It really can't compare to the Spur though, so it's your choice whether to go for it.

OPTIONAL: Check that room marked with all the clocks on the Outer Wall. If you're on the right path to the best ending, you'll find a timer in there. It times how long you take to get through the final level. Extra-super-inhumanly-fast times will net you a different title screen theme.

10. Take the mushroom back to Curly (duh).

11. Good luck getting through the new Final Cave.

12. After beating Misery, the Doctor, and the Core, while fleeing the island as it crumbles, reenter the safe house. If you've taken ANY DAMAGE from the falling rocks, or don't have all the heart tanks (putting you at 50 HP), or have used up your life bottle, you might as well commit seppuku at this point, because there's no way in space you'll survive what's coming up. Jump down the hole to enter the final level, and remember: YOU WILL DIE HERE. Many times. Also, don't even think of using the life bottle before you've reached the final boss.

OldSkoolCrazy
14 May 2005, 20:17
After you beat the core can you save for the good ending?

MonkeyforaHead

Yeah, just save and then examine the bookcase and it'll take you back outside (you can't get out any other way, as the door gets stuck once you enter).

Zero72
20 May 2005, 21:51
It'll take a few attempts. The patterns on the first three are easy to memorize, though it's easy to mess up on the first one. The second and third forms are barely a threat at all after a couple of tries, and you should still have your life pot, so...

OldSkoolCrazy

ressurection of doom!

ok, i'm on my second run on the egg corridor and got to the door which used to be a saveroom but now holds two dragon bosses when i pick up the item in there.
anyways... how do i kill them? what's their vulnerability, i just shoot them and shoot them and nothing. which becomes frustrating since i can easily stop them from hitting me.

OldSkoolCrazy
12 Jul 2005, 00:39
When their mouth is open you shoot them. This will also prevent them from shooting out fireballs.

while i'm at it, is there any savepoint before them? i hate to have to go through the whole level again whenever i lose.

oh, and the machinegun on Level 3 makes a sweet jetpack (specially because many enemies can't hit you from above) :D

They are vulnerable while their mouths are open, and immediately afterwards while their eyes are wide open.

MonkeyforaHead
12 Jul 2005, 10:54
Incidentally, you can actually bypass them entirely if you don't mind missing the missile upgrade. Just go through the crack in the wall on the far right.

Oh, and they're not actually vulnerable anywhere on their body; you do have to land the shot inside their mouth when they yawn for it to do damage.

Finally, the only part of the battle with them I really had any major difficulty with was when they both kept their mouths open and started spewing flames constantly. What I didn't realize was that this is actually just a temporary attack -- they do go back to their regular pattern after a short time, so you can concentrate on dodging and/or shooting the fireballs (preferably with a gun that doesn't require manual ammo replenishment).

SupSuper
12 Jul 2005, 11:54
yeah apparently it did cause damage, why didn't i notice it?

anyways, now i've gone past the Egg Corridor, got the crappy ending, loaded, gone past the Outer Wall and now i'm on the Plantation. question: how do i get out of that place? i go up and up until i get to that part with the skull signs and where there's those stupid rock monsters which squish me as soon as i get close, no chance of avoiding them :-/

First, make sure you've been thrown in jail, read the letter, and escaped. From there, you want to find your way into the hideout somewhere on the plantation. Hint: The door that you have to enter is visible, but the path to it isn't.

I have a question tough, when you arrive to the plantation, if you go straight up with the machine gun you find some weird guy that is just standing there in some sort of temple. Does he do anything at all?
I also found some locked door or something(can't remember exactly what it was but it was definitely locked)... while I was going up the hill to the plantation. How do you open it?

anyways, now i'm at the final baddies. so now i need tips on what's more efficient against them, because it's extremely hard to go through a lot of bosses without being able to recharge (or even save) in between.

i've got all weapons at level 3, 45 health, 30 upgraded rockets, booster, that thingy that reduces energy loss and that thingy that increases machinegun recharge rate. i think that's all.

btw, should i save my rockets for the Doctor? because it's much faster to kill the witch with them and they didn't seem to be too effective on the Doctor.

anyways, i can easily handle the witch, you just have to keep moving when she's attacking and it's easy. then the Doctor on its 1st phase is also easy since you can just attack him from above using the machinegun, since he mostly attacks sideways.
but now, by the time the guy changes to its 2nd phase, its not so easy anymore, and i keep getting killed. anyone got any tips?

The Bubbler may come in handy for when Muscle Doctor uses that swarm of bats attack. That's the only real part where I have trouble. Besides that, you should be mostly alright as long as you stay in the air. Oh, and once you do beat him, make sure to talk to Chaco, the purple Mimiga, twice.

well, after playing all night trying to blow up the core, i finally did it. so yes, i've finally finished the game, the whole story makes sense now, etc. 'twas fun :)

now comes the time to investigate the game, because the game was just so much fun that i have to do that. for instance, i know that there's a 3rd ending. so how do i get it? do i have to find absolutely everything in the game? because for one, i know i missed the Bubbler.

anyways, examining the game and all, here's what i came up with:
- Bottom path under "Passage?" (before Statue Chamber): is there any way to go there?

- Is there any point to the guy in the Statue Chamber? Or the Littles family in the outer wall?

- Music not found in-game:
o Running Hell (unless that's the music after you defeat the core and have to run for it)
o Seal Chamber
o Toroko's Theme (probably what you get with the 3rd ending)

- Areas not found (according to hex-editing Doukutsu.exe):
o "Last Cave (Hidden)" (not the same as "Final Cave")
o Passage? (apparently there's two, not just one)
o Sacred Ground - B1
o Sacred Ground - B2
o Sacred Ground - B3
o Seal Chamber
o Clock Room

- Boss not found (according to credits):
o Red Demon (looks similiar to the guy in the Statue Chamber. hmmm...)

Ok, here we go, then, Step-by-step guide. SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS.

1.When you meet Curly, do not trade for the machine gun (reccomended on first attempt, not actually necessary, but you'll thank me.)
2. Don't give the Polar Star to the guy in the labyrinth, either. Hold onto it.
3. When you beat Monster X in the Labyrinth, SAVE.
4. Booster appears - Do not talk to him. Jump over the pit, using that odd-looking red blob of pixels as a guide for the jump.
5. In the room with the core, there will be something in the bottom right corner of the room. You must get it, either before the battle begins or afterwards when the water rises.
6. Take Curly with you.
7. Make double sure you visit the save point in the Living Waterway. Inspect the computer on the far right of the room, and follow the instructions from there. Do not leave that room without Curly.
8. You will become happy that you did not talk to Booster.
9. Remember where the First Cave is? Go back and talk to the hermit gunsmith. You will become happy that you did not trade for Curly's gun.
10: Reccomended: Check out that room underneath where you enter the Outer Wall.
11. Find Curly at the plantation.
12. Go to the graveyard -- you'll know what to do, and chances are, you'll be running two errands at once. Maybe.
13. Take the item from the graveyard to Curly. She'll actually remember your name, and your/her mission. The plot is nearly complete. Recieve Iron Bond.
14. Make sure you stop at the save point after you beat the Core and the island is collapsing at the end.

Also, none of these items do anything, but see if you can get them anyway: Chaco's Lipstick, Curly's Underwear, Alien Medal, Clay Figure Medal.

And it might not hurt to visit the labyrinth shopkeeper once you've completed step 9.

Apologies for resurecting this thread but I started playing this game a couple of days ago and I'm stuck already.

I'm in the second area you can access with the teleporter in arthur's house (It's called something like Grasslands). I've got to rescue some guy.

So far I've

found the key to santa's house and got the fireball weapon
killed the giant jelly-fish and gone through the fireplace
talked to the guy through the crack in the wall
Used the key he gave me to enter the power room
beaten the big computer screen guy
turned on the fans.
collected one health upgrade, 2 missile ammo upgrades and killed the rabbit thing that comes out of the fireplace.

I've followed the path to the end and used the fans to get to a door.
The door is locked and has the word "Gum" writen on it.

What do I do now?

That's the only door I haven't been through (except the one the guy is behind, that I have to break down with the pink thing).

Yes, I know. I suck at this game.

Yes, I know. I suck at this game. You have to talk to the robot in the power room after the boss battle (he's still alive, push him out), he'll make a bomb to set free the guy stuck behind the door. Afterwards just talk to that guy again (through the crack) until he gives you the key for the Gum Room.

in the room where you fight balrog ( the big computer screen guy) there is a robot sticking in the floor.. you need to pull it out and talk to it. Also try talking to the guy locked in the shed again.

MIGHTY REVIVE GO.

Pixel released a smattering of pictures that show Cave Story when it was early in development.
...I found it interesting, anyway.

that rpg screen is fascinating; was he just not sure of where he wanted to take the game at first?

What is Cave Story? Is it any good? ;)
Is it better than Earthworm Jim or Jazz Jackrabbit?

Actually, I have played Cave Story before. Nothing that amazing.

And nothing can beat Earthworm Jim's humor. Shiny Entertainment's pinnacle in my opinion.

It's a game that would have been popular and top-notch 15 years ago on a Game Boy.

Nowadays there are platformers like Gish that amaze me more.

Earthworm Jim is available on the Wii virtual console too, btw.
And Earthworm Jim 4 has been announced.

EWJ was funny, but the gameplay wasn't anything special.

Wow. Hearing that made my day. :D If it does not come out for PC I may just die of disappointment. :( I love Earthworm Jim so very much.

Yup, I know. Saw that video too.
I especially like that they finally made the tar blob separable and joinable.
