View Full Version : Playing from HD instead of CD

Howdy,

I've been playing WA for about a month now, on my laptop. I'm slowly getting my mojo back on roping, etc, yet I find that waiting for the various screens to load very frustrating... I've tried to copy the files on my HD yet it always ask for the CD whenever I double-click WA.
I'm using XP, got the right patches, no problem except the slow cd player. Is there any way to play with the data files on the HD? And better yet, without reinstalling the whole thing so I can keep my current team stats?

Thanks,

JF.

you could make an image of your cd and mount it with -->daemon tools (http://www.daemon-tools.cc)!

You can do this by creating a virtual CD. I, personally, use Virtual CD 6.0, but it costs to use it. There are some freeware programs out there though.

Edit: Bonz beat me to it, use DaemonTools if you want freeware programs. It works just as well, if not better, than what I use.

-->daemon tools (http://www.daemon-tools.cc) is free for private (non commercial) use!

:)

edit:
use an .iso image, as it is a bit smaller in filesize than .bin or .nrg!
~540mb for w:a

WOW, why haven't I thought about that?

But...

What program is he/she(how will I know?) going to use to get an .iso file? ?? ???

There's lots out there. Nero, Alcohol for example, for free ones search "cd image creator" or the like in google.

How do you "mount" the iso for use as a CD?

I have already posted a link to the Daemon Tools homepage in the second post in this thread.

i find alcohol software has a more intuitive interface... maybe try alcohol 52% freeware edition? (only limitation is max 6 virtual drives)

OK ... I've got Daemon working (kindof working backwards here!) .... but when I try to create the ISO i get data redundacy errors. I've tried nero 7, LCISOCreator, WinISO. Maybe the CD is scratched, but it installs fine.

Any ideas?

Use the free trial of Alcohol, choose the disc, for burning pick regular CD and save as an ISO. Then mount it to Deamon and it should work. At least that's what I did.

i hate redundency errors -.- i had to dump the contents of my "zork grand inquisitor" discs onto my win9x machine then transfer them over the network... o_O windows XP is sh|t loads more picky with CD's then windows 9x... same with baldurs gate... and some other games i have... they will report crc errors under windows xp but not under win9x.

How could anything in Windows XP have a more intuitive interface than Daemon Tools, without voice commands or thought commands?

that funnily enough does not contain links to "free" software run... and i personaly hate any and all shareware crap... only reason id ever use shareware is when i want to only test something out and the full product is a few gigs to download.

Well, the VirtualCloneDrive is freeware and to create the CD image the trial version of CloneCD is sufficient.

That said, I think Daemon Tools is the better virtual drive program.
Also, for creating the CD image you can use any other CD burning software, which most people probably get bundled with their hardware.

Just thinking, why you should make image with alcohol and mount with daemon when u can mount it with alcohol aswell ? Why to download useless programs when the program for creating images can mount the images aswell

Your post is baffling. Are you suggesting that CloneCD and VirtualCloneDrive are not free? In what way are they not free?

I don't see how using different software will get around "data reducancy" errors, unless in the odd case that other software ignores them or goes around them. Even if the CD is not scratched, it might be a form of copy-protection (a "scratch" outside any data-filled area) since CD cloners check the whole thing.

Copying the entire CD contents to your disk and making an image out of that usually works.
As for software:
VCD (http://www.slysoft.com/en/virtual-clonedrive.html)
CloneCD (http://www.slysoft.com/en/clonecd.html)
Daemon Tools (http://www.daemon-tools.cc/)
Alcohol Software (http://www.alcohol-soft.com/)
UltraISO (http://www.ezbsystems.com/ultraiso/)
Nero (http://www.nero.com/)

CloneCD is a 21 day trial version.
VirtualCloneDrive is freeware.
