View Full Version : Randomised name list

When creating/editing a team in Worms Armageddon on PC, there is the option to hit a question mark button and randomise the name of a worm. I was wondering if there was a file on the disc or somewhere in the install folder which listed all the possible names.

I can understand this might sound like a strange request, but I'm feeling all nostalgic and would like to be able to remake the team I had back when I played Worms Armageddon for the first time (>10 years ago) which I know was made up of randomised names. I've clicked through some of the randomised names with the button in-game, but I'm getting a lot of repeats and not finding many/any of the names I used previously.

So, as I mentioned before - is there a file somewhere where all these names are listed?
Many thanks in advance.

yeah there is actually, but i forgot which. maybe try a search in the files contents for a random name

Tried various searches in both the disc and the install folder (eg "dr. spangle" "spadge" "sputnik" "streaky bacon") but haven't managed to find anything.

They're strings hidden in the binary (WA.exe). Newer WA binaries use some type of compression making looking through them harder, but the binary on the CD is unencrypted so you can use that (I doubt any of these have changedf with the beta updates).

The names in my particular version (sold-out software, the file being X:\Install\Install\WA.exe where X is your CD drive) start at offset 0018AB38 (use a hex editor) - yours might be different, search for one of the names (Weener is near the top of the list in mine) in your favourite hex editor (on Windows, I've always used XVI32 but I bet there are better ones available now; I haven't seriously used Windows in quite some time).

EDIT: For a European 1.0 disc, the strings are in the WA.icd file instead of WA.exe, and start at offset 00177D48

EDIT2: As it turns out, I was wrong about the beta updates - they used to be compressed/encrypted, but aren't any more. In the 3.6.31.0 WA.exe file, the strings are located at offset 0026055C

I'm still waiting for my last post to be approved by a moderator so this might end up coming out as a double post, but I found the list with these instructions - thanks very much for your help!

Try HxD, it didn't get updates since some years, but is simpler and a little bit more powerful imho
