View Full Version : Real time instead of rounds

Even though I have been a Worms fan for over a decade, I'm new to the forums, so I'm sorry if this has been asked before.

I was thinking about the possibility of having real time matches, instead of round based ones. All the players would move their worms at the same time and you could switch between your worms at any time. Using one of the weapons wouldn't end the round (because there are no rounds) but deactivate that weapon or worm for some time to prevent bazooka spamming.

Of course this would make it impossible to play local multiplayer, but I think it might be fun for a LAN party or online.

I know this would be a completely different game and I expect to get a lot of negative response, but I though it would be interesting. Maybe as a separate game mode or option in the future?

That idea's been around for ever. At one point many years ago there was a closed beta of a Realtime Worms hack for Worms Armageddon, but it was excessively buggy to the point of essentially being unusable for anything other than testing where everyone knows what will and won't cause a crash, as well as being quite hard to set up, and it never got much more development beyond that as far as I know - nothing else ever came of it.

People have made unofficial free realtime Worms-like games, of course, but never anything like as high-quality as the real Worms games.

So, yeah, it's an interesting question - some have had a taste of what it might be like, but the chances of it actually happening are rather small, in the near future at least. I'm sure Team17 have considered this many times but due to them not having done it, it seems to be a direction they don't want to go in.

I don't like the idea of real-time Worms to be honest.

See here. (http://www.openlierox.net/)

I've had this game forever but apparently it changed some time ago and I didn't notice it :p At least it used to be called "LieroX".

You won't find a better one and it is actually pretty good. Focuses more on getting around the map real fast and the artillery aspect is non-existent - that doesn't mean you don't have to aim, however.

as well as being quite hard to set up

Although I was never the host, it was never harder then just dropping a dll in to the games folder like every other Wormkit module. (Btw real time worms kicked so much ass...)

I'm not a big fan of real-time strategy games in general, but I have a lot of ideas for a game partly inspired by Worms if I ever find time to try and make it.

I think it would only work if you either have just 1 worm (which I'd prefer), or you can control your whole army of worms at once and they automatically use basic weapons to defend themselves. Though if the game was customisable enough, the players could try all kinds of setups and see what works well and what doesn't.
