I installed Worms 2 earlier today, and when trying to play the game I got the error message "Unable to start CD player".

I tried installing the patch hoping that would fix the issue, and now I get the error "Cannot find Worms 2 CD".

I've read through the "Solution to most w2 problems" thread and not found a solution. I only have one CD/DVD drive on my PC so the solutions about using a specific drive in that thread won't work.

Can anybody help me fix this issue?

Thanks.

If possible, I suggest you play WA instead, since it runs on the same engine as W2 and can do everything W2 can do and more with the help of RubberWorm (WormKit module), plus has fixes for bugs like this.

Here's the situation. There are 3 games in the Worms 2 generation: Worms 2, Worms Armageddon, and Worms World Party. They all run on the same engine with the same (or very similar) graphics, weapons, etc. They all have interesting differences, but the only one which has been continually developed since its release is Worms Armageddon. Its latest update was released in November 2010, which is very recent. This means it has received compatibility updates, bug fixes, and tons of features official and third-party. It also means the communities for the other 2 games (Worms 2 and Worms World Party) have dwindled significantly as Worms Armageddon has collected most of their players.

While I don't know how to fix your problem with Worms 2, I can tell you that Worms Armageddon is the way to go if you want Worms-2-style gameplay. If you don't have it already, you can get it from MasterTronic (formerly Sold Out Software) (http://www.mastertronic.com/productSoldOut.asp?pid=267&productLabelID=1) or Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/Worms-2-Armageddon-Pc/dp/B000E23XNA) bundled with a brand new copy of Worms 2.

Here's a video showcasing the most important bug fixes and features provided by the Worms Armageddon updates (http://wormtube.worms2d.info/81/wa_beta_showdown).

You should install Worms 2 to a path that has no spaces, for example:

Invalid paths
C:\Program Files\Worms 2
C:\Program Files\Worms2

Valid path
C:\Worms2

Worms: Armageddon is superior in stability and compatibility but so far still lacks a lot of the weapon/option customization that Worms 2 features. Wormkit adds unofficial new features in Worms: Armageddons with the new features delivered in modules but there is still no module to add all the functionality still exclusive to Worms 2 and with Wormkit all players you play against online must be using the same modules as each other and the versions of the modules must match (Few exceptions exist).

I do have Armaggedon, I recently bought all 3 2nd generation worms games as I lost my old copy of Armageddon.

The menu in Worms World Party is really slow for me for some reason, which is odd as it's the newer of the games. Worms Armageddon seems to work fine after I updated it, but I've not played it properly since installing it yet.

I wanted to play Worms 2 too because of the amount of customisation that the other games lack, so wanted to be able to play all of them.

The path I have it installed to is:

C:\Team17\Worms2

So it has no spaces, yet I still have the problem :(

Any ideas on what I can do to try and fix the issue? I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling, but had no effect.

If you have multiple optical drives, place the disc in the drive with the earliest letter. So if you have Drive D and E as optical drives, insert disc in Drive D.

True.
That also solves the problem if you're not hearing the CDDA music tracks.

You can change the drive letters in the Windows Disk Management.

WinKey + R
Enter diskmgmt.msc
Right-click drive
Change Drive Letters and Paths...

Note:
1) You'll mess up the paths for other games and applications that rely on the old drive letter.
2) All this applies to virtual drives too.

As I said in my original post, I only have one optical drive, so unfortunately I can't try that.
