20 Oct 2010, 18:43
After a rather long break, MnP is proud to finally release the newest map in the Meat & Potatoes family:

Squatters v1.0 for Worms Reloaded and Worms Armageddon!

We really hope you enjoy battling it out on this map. It is the first MnP map designed entirely underground (cavern-style), and it's about as close to a dark-wormer's style as we'll probably ever get. The water will slowly fill up the map as you fight, so watch out!

UPDATE! Squatters is also available in Rope Shopper format. Get it here (http://www.mnpp.net/?p=319).

The official MnP Website (http://www.mnpp.net/?p=279) or on WMDB (http://wmdb.org/17001)

LEVEL OVERVIEW

The truth is down there...

Squatters, the first vertical cavern map from MnP, shows the visceral chain of unfortunate events that befell an ill-fated band of arctic explorers. As these intrepid worms dig ever-deeper they will soon discover two undeniable truths...

We are not alone... and we never were.

This level is a test of upward survival. Players will be virtually clinging to the walls as the bulk of the map is an open chasm. Excavation vehicles should be viewed as stair-like escape routes from the rising melt-away factor. Forked tunnels can turn from dark worm safety dens to claustrophobic poison chambers. Ninja ropes can turn haughty show-boaters into rookie trapeze artists falling to their doom. Choose your attacks wisely. Make every second count. They're coming.

INSTALLATION

Notes for installation for both Worms Reloaded and Worms Armageddon have been included in the readme file. Schemes are also included for BOTH WR and WA.

Have fun with this one guys. It's pretty tricky. We have designed it to be challenging. You will find that some areas are especially difficult to negotiate, while others are easy as pie, and that is on purpose. We think you'll like the balance that it creates.

Stay tuned for news regarding the next upcoming MnP release: Derelict! And please, don't forget to let us know what you thought of MnP's Squatters! Have a good weekend everyone.

PREVIOUS NEWS

In a shocking turn of events, Jeremy (or Clogz) of Meat & Potatoes is actually working on his next MnP masterpiece! In his defense, he's been pretty busy with his new baby.

Excuses... excuses...

And just for the record, Jer was kinda the guy who got all this MnP mess started, coming up with the ideas for Titanic and AF1 waaaaay back in the day. AF1 was entirely his own creation from start to finish, and he's also been an incredible help with a lot of the furniture featured in pretty much every MnP map ever made.

Anyway, you may be wondering: "What kind of crap name is Squatters anyway? Well we're not gonna tell you what it means. Hopefully the meaning will be obvious when the map is released. Or maybe it will be just artsy enough to evade all comprehension.

The map setting so far is staged in an ice cavern. Lot's of icework will be done, lots of drilling equipment and exploratory fixtures. Jer is making record time on this map and the screenshot here is quite outdated. The map will hopefully pay a little attention to the dark worming crowd, although the style of gameplay will be a little more hectic than your standard "dig a hole in the ground and hide".

Stay tuned and let us know what you think.

Do keep in mind the visual quality will probably be degraded a bit for the W:A version.

Yep, unfortunately.. But just a little bit.
Will still look awesome enough!

I'm hoping so. Jer has been making some really good progress on this one. I will have to get another screenshot from him this weekend.

Can you get a screenshot of both the W:A and W:R versions?

Can you get a screenshot of both the W:A and W:R versions?

The WA version will only be different due to the color limitations. However, it is impossible to get a screenshot of what the map will look like when it is finished at this point because not all of the colors that will be used in the map have been introduced yet.

Basically you would have a practially ditherless screeshot - a bit misleading in the WA platform.

And what about Space Station that U've mentioned before?

The Space Station map is scheduled to come out after this one - so I will start a dev thread on that after Squatters releases. I have made a little progress but not as much as Jer has on Squatters. Kinda using this time to take a break. :)

Here is the next dev screenshot for Squatters:

But what schemes are we supposed to play on this, when it's finished?

All your maps look totally awesome! Any plans for a nuclear-holocaust-post-apocalyptic "Fallout" style map? ^^

Rlly like this icy style man.
But what schemes are we supposed to play on this, when it's finished?

Jer says thanks! And the other thing I wanted to point out is that it is totally his style. Even though we both represent MnP, his style definitely looks different than mine - and I love it.

The scheme will be custom created. Of course you can choose to play our levels any way you want, but we always have a pretty clear vision of how they should be played. This one is no different.

We intend to make this a cross between darkworming and a race of sorts. The reason the darkworming element is there is because a lot of the action takes place inside solid ice. We will be providing a lot of the tunnels though. The "race" part of the map is brought on by the fact that the ice cavern itself is rapidly filling up with water. You will have to race up tunnels (creating some of your own at times) and make decent use of the rope to avoid the icy depths below, while focusing on hammering your opponents back down. The last team still breathing and thawed are the obvious winners. We really hope this scheme will make players feel the tension of being trapped in a cave with practically no way out.

@Sithlord and franpa:

Thanks guys! Post-apocalyptic is always a nice theme. I was actually thinking about that the other day. I won't say it isn't gonna happen, but I will say that we do have a pretty full schedule at the moment (as regards map projects).

After Squatters, should come the Space Station map I'm working on. I hope to get it done in November. In 2011, plans have been set for both a Mafia-themed fort map and an Old West style level, with probably the latter coming first (that level makes me want to stop working on the Space Station). Jer has intentions of actually working on Alcatraz as well. So any new ideas would be at least 3 or 4 maps out at this point.

Now this is right up my alley! This is the exact kind of map I love to play! Cannot wait for this to be finished, and W:A got an update, can this week get any better?

He's been making some good progress. I saw a section of it (on his phone - sorry no screenie yet) that we was working on with a drilling machine that had fallen into some unexpected tunnels. The snow and ice are looking really great.

I have a feeling this one is going to get some real good detailing between the both of us before it is ready to be released. So thanks in advance for your patience. I will try to get a screenie from him this week though.

I know some people think that Hundreds made me up for the sake of sounding more...corporate. But I am very real and very tired so I am surprising myself at the rate of progress going into Squatters. This level will have a very unique gameplay dynamic from other MnP levels and I personally can't wait to play it. That's why we're making it in the first place. I hope you all enjoy it as well! Thanks for your support and sit tight... "they're" coming.

Hey guys!

Sorry we have been out of touch for a while. I dunno what it is about December and January that have always been such a dry spell for creativity for me. But I have 2 pieces of good news:

1. We just took a look at Alex's map and boy are we proud. That guy told me he was going to do something like our style and he DID it. And he did it well. He has our respect.

2. Squatters WILL be released this weekend. Jer's eyeballs were the first to fall out during the creation of this map, and mine were the second. So at the moment, we are both quite blind. We hope to regain sight in a few days. The good news is that the level has gotten some SERIOUS work done on it. Jer handed me what basically was a masterpiece designed in Illustrator, and he asked me to do some detailing on the gradients and stuff in Fireworks. Well the combined result is stunning and we can't wait to hear what you guys think of it. See you this weekend!

Finally got around to playing this, and I have to say the map itself is quite amazing, looks lovely :)

But I felt the 5 ropes on the scheme were way too powerful. Using a rope was like a guaranteed kill what with the ploppyness of this map. I'd either limit the ammo to, say, 2 ropes or decrease rope power so you can't just move anywhere on the map with a single rope.

hundreds
18 Feb 2011, 17:49
Very good observation. Thank you and I believe I WILL be doing just that. I really didn't have too much time to thoroughly play test this in WA and I was afraid there might have been too many ropes. On WR, the rope is so weird that you almost need unlimited ones.

Oh and Thanks billygoat!
