Hey,

I'm sure all of you know what problem I'm talking about, the famous color bug. I've read this (http://worms2d.info/Troubleshooting_FAQ#The_game_colours_get_all_messe d_up) but I don't understand some of the solutions. Could someone explain to me how to install the registry thing (Solution #1) and/or this wkColorFix, where do I put those files? (Solution #3).

And I'm using Windows 7.

You should just find one that works.

For the registry script, simply click the link corresponding to your operating system edition, and open/run the registry script.

Doesn't work. Still buggy colors. What about the other solution? Where do I put these two files?

wkColorFix.dll
wkColorFix.dpr

FWIW, the registry fix worked fine on a MSDNAA windows 7 pro on a worms armageddon upgraded with the last beta patch.

In the game directory.

I have installed the registry file and placed those two files in my Worms Armageddon game folder. My colors are still messed up, what can I do? I don't have the Pro version of W7, I have Home.

That sounds terribly like you may be doing something wrong.

1) Are you sure that you installed the registry file corresponding to the version of your operating system? Installing both won't hurt, just in case. Judging by received feedback, it's very rare that the registry scripts don't work.

2) You're supposed to run the game through WormKit in order for wkColorFix to load.

1) Yes, 64 bit, but even if I'm 100% sure I tried both. Didn't work.
2) Through WormKit? Explain please. I think I must've missed something here. I just extracted those two files and put them in my game folder.:p

Yeah now when I start the game it looks normal, but then I connect to WormNET via "Autologin" and the buggy colors are back. :(

One thing comes up in my mind when I see this post.

@CyberShadow: I think you should edit this thread (http://forum.team17.co.uk/showthread.php?t=38762) and add something that helps newbies know what - on earth - that module is and how to make it work.

wkColorFix is a WormKit module that solves the palette problem (by suspending Windows Explorer while in game).
To make it work, make sure you have WormKit (http://worms.thecybershadow.net/wormkit/) installed, and download the wkColorFix.dll to your W:A directory. Run WormKit instead of WA.exe .

(Not everyone in the worms community knows WormKit well.)

I suppose it's too much to ask for everyone to notice that I have a link to WormKit in all of my posts' signatures...

I suppose it's too much to ask for everyone to notice that I have a link to WormKit in all of my posts' signatures...

I mean, even though you have a WormKit link in your signatures, some people still don't know the fact: The .dll files beginning with lowercase "wk" are WormKit modules.

Signatures are signatures, and people won't click the links inside signatures as long as they don't know (and don't need to know) who you are.

I don't need to explain too much here, because simply mentioning the word "WormKit" in the thread should be enough...

Well I started WormKit.exe and the colors are normal at first, but when I click "AutoLogin", they are buggy again. And I have both of the .dll files in my W:A game folder. Correct me if I'm doing something wrong.

Anyone? I still got messed up colors.

Another application may also be the cause of palette problems. W:A logs palette corruption occurrences to the file palette.log in your W:A folder. Note that csrss.exe is a system process, and its presence in palette.log most likely implies OS incompatibility as described above.

Have a look at the palette.log file, perhaps you have firewall or antivirus software popping something up as you connect to WormNet.

Weird, I don't have a palette.log file anywhere, searched for it. Should I post some screenshots of my main folder or something?

First make sure you're really running version 3.6.29.0 of the game, whether via WA.exe or WormKit.exe. You can do that by hovering the mouse pointer over the large logo above the main menu and checking what it says at the bottom of the screen when you do. And yeah, the file should be in the game's main folder.

v3.6.28.0 (WA.exe) :O

Update then to the latest beta version 3.6.29.0

Ok, I will try, what about the patch?

franpa

Only install it if you are prompted during the installation of the latest beta.

Uhm oh ok.

Eeeeeeeeeehhh. Compatibility BLOWS. *expulses a fart*

To avoid any flaming, I will get directly to the point. I know it works and if it doesn't, either you don't have Vista/7 or it's so messed up that you're better off with those fixes up there dammit.

I tried everything, not much works all the time, although this proves useful in most older games, which poke at this dreaded color bug. Sitting on Win7 x64 Ultimate, modded to the Bone.

Right-click on Desktop. Yes on Desktop. Select "Screen Resolution", or wherever you access your screen resolution in your language.

Run the smelly game already.

Found this fix a week ago - while on my quest to fixing StarCraft.
The colors might switch yoyo after awhile. Maybe. Maybe not. Try to turn off active software and background processes/services. (Could use IOBit Game Booster, but I don't personally recommend it.) If colors do, Alt+Tab out & back in.

I just tried, but the game hates when I do that and sometimes crashes. Maybe it's just me, maybe because I didn't try yet with the 256-color compatibility which I HIGHLY RECOMMEND because it "helps keep things stable". Feel free to try other compatibility modes (Right-click on WA.EXE > Properties > Compatibility)

Now why the HECK isn't this documented anywhere and had to be found by a nowhere guy somewhere deep in the Interwebz. Blow me.

What the hell is this bug anyway. It's a goddamn joke people, seriously. Tell Microsoft to do something, because it looks like they already did, but nobody knows squat about anything because there's no RTFM. g'ahh ok ok I leave now thank you

G'AHH - Blasphemy. Game turns red and alt+tab crashes the sh!t out of the guts. I guess I'll have to go through the patching hell process.

...

You know what I'll just wait until I install my secondary and tertiary Windows XP versions. For now Imma play some Half-Life LOL. Can't wait to play Worms & WWP though. Really can't!! Good job guys! It's hard to maintain an old game that's so popular =p It's like euthanasia on life support. OROFL

The fix I mentioned still works very well for ...eh, games that run stable on Vista. So sorry for double-post.

You only need to install the latest Beta (http://wa.team17.com/main.html?page=supp&area=upda&file=15) to update your W:A to the latest version.

See here (http://worms2d.info/Troubleshooting_FAQ#The_game_colours_get_all_messe d_up) for fixes for colour problems.

Wait a minute, he said about compatibility options! IIRC, didn't those tend to cause more problems?

CyberShadow
13 Oct 2010, 17:33
Yes, but as far as I know they neither help nor worsen palette problems.

Egi-RaZoRZ

I agree. 256-colors doesn't do much after all, it clutters up resources for nothing on my side lol. Now, I've managed to get it working with the Screen Resolution window open, but as SOON as I alt+tab out of it it CRASHES (LOL), no matter which combination of which compat mode and with what patch.

I dunno guys... But keep the Res window fix in mind, will save you trouble for other oldies.

If you're getting a message regarding ERRORLOG.TXT, post it here. Also, have you tried minimizing using the game's methods (Shift+Esc etc.)?

It's impossible to run a paletted game in a window, without either switching the entire desktop to the game's palette, or emulating 32-bit color by converting 8-bit to 32-bit on every frame (slow).

My colors are fixed but I have two new problems.

1) My gameplay isn't smooth, it isn't lag but everything that is moving looks hacky, it's like my PC wouldn't be able to handle this game and low FPS, but my PC can handle any game like CoD MW2 on highest graphics...
2) Sound quality is low. How do I improve it?

Try the TimerWorkaround_On.reg tweak (or Advanced Options setting).

Hmm, I haven't heard that problem before, except when emulating W:A.

franpa

Under options, click "Advanced" from there try enabling the "Timer Workaround" function. Restart W:A and test. (ensure you have version 3.6.30.0 installed first!)

I am unsure of what you mean by low quality sound, make sure your drivers are up to date from the manufacturors website and not Windows Update.
