View Full Version : Classic Speechbank - play using the ORIGINAL "English" speechbank from Worms!

WAIT! BEFORE WE BEGIN... TIME FOR A QUICK HISTORY LESSON

Did you know that in the original Worms and WormsDC Andy Davidson provided the voice for the English speechbank? It's true! This original speechbank only appears in Worms, Worms Utd. and Worms: The Director's Cut (with some speech used for the Worms table in Addiction Pinball).

The speechbank was never used again, and someone else recorded the English speechbank for Worms 2 onwards. In fact the "Classic" speechbank seen in Worms Reloaded is, in actual fact, from Worms 3D, making one of the newest speechbanks in the game.

OUR LIVES ARE MEANINGLESS

With the original speechbank never having survived past the first generation, it's understandable you may be feeling a little sad, or perhaps even depressed.

QUICKLY, HAND ME THAT DISCOUNT 500-PILL BOTTLE OF ASPRIN!

Overdosing on Aspirin is a terrible way to commit suicide. You could just jump in front of a train instead! But don't do that. It'd be easier and safer to download the ORIGINAL ENGLISH SPEECHBANK, handily converted from the original Amiga IFF audio files for use in Worms 2, Worms Armageddon and Worms World Party!

What's more, two versions of the speechbank are available. Worms: The Director's Cut used different takes for the FireBall and DragonPunch sound files that tread the line of copyright infringement. But hey, only 5,000 people bought Worms: The Director's Cut, so Capcom probably don't even care!

SWEET MOTHER OF ALL THINGS GOOD AND STURDY! HOW MUCH DO I HAVE TO PAY FOR THIS PRIVILEGE?

That's the thing! I can't legally sell this speechbank because it's not my work. In fact distributing it in any way, shape or form is legally dubious as it is! But I'm doing it anyway in the hopes that Team17's legal department don't hunt me down, rip open my stomach and fling my entrails around like confetti.

So here they are:

["Worms" English speechbank (http://worms.benpaddon.com/speech/classic.zip)] - .zip file, 320KB
["Worms: The Director's Cut" English speechbank (http://worms.benpaddon.com/speech/classicDC.zip)] - .zip file, 320KB

HELP! I'M A SIMPLETON WHO DOESN'T KNOW HOW TO OPERATE A COMPUTER!

That's okay, the instructions are so simple even an Activision CEO could follow them!

Download the speechbank you want. In fact if you like you can download them both without any conflicts!
The zip file will open in your compression program of choice. Simply click "extract" and browse to your W2/WA/WWP folder and go to user\speech\
Extract! You DON'T need to create a new folder - a folder called "Classic" or "Classic - Director's Cut" will be created and the new speechbank will be installed.
Alternatively if you don't have any file compression software installed, the file will open in Windows, which will present you with a browser window containing a folder called "Classic" or "Classic - Director's Cut". Simply drag this folder to your user\speech\ folder.
Go to the Team Editor in W2/WA/WWP and click the speechbank drop down. Great Muppety Odin, the speechbank is there and ready to use!

NOTE: If you're playing Worms 2 your "speech" folder might be somewhere else. I think it's under "data" but I can't remember. Just look for it, you'll find it.

I DIDN'T KILL MY WIFE!

I don't care!

SO THAT'S IT?

Yep! That's it! Enjoy hearing Andy Davidson's squeaky voice calling you stupid, a nutter, and saying the slightly more comical "Whoops!" instead of the homogenized "Bummer!"

ANY DIFFERENCES WE SHOULD KNOW ABOUT?

Yes!

There wasn't a "VICTORY.WAV" in the original Worms, so I've substituted with "EXCELLENT.WAV"
The original Worms also didn't have "BRILLIANT.WAV" or "AMAZING.WAV", and these again have been substituted with "EXCELLENT.WAV".
"COLLECT.WAV" is basically "LAUGH.WAV" with the shotgun reload at the start, for the same reasons above.
Special thanks to DeadCode for decompressing the WormsDC versions of "FireBall" and "DragonPunch". The WDC speechbank files were compressed in two different file formats and for the last decade I've had no ruddy idea how to crack 'em open and feast on the goey entrails. Trust DC to figure it out.

Ha!
Has L.A. made you such a supercilious oaf now that you don't host Worms stuff on Dream17 anymore? ;)

As the new Lord and Overseer of Dream17 I will shamelessly steal those speechbanks and upload them myself.

I'd upload 'em but I lost the FTP deets. If you want to email 'em to me, I'd love you forever.

I think the opposite is the case.
S2K apparently slacked off a bit with the humor-to-substance ratio in the last couple of paragraphs. :)

Well I didn't even really care for the speech bank but had to read this post entirely, because I lol'd. This is actually very good humour, not another insider joke only one quarter of the people understand.

4.0 should also allow us to hear each other's custom sound banks.

Nah - bonz loves the game, but I'm pretty sure it's more for the features than the content. Correct me if I'm wrong, though, bonz - it's not like I represent you or anything :P

More like addicted.
And it's both features AND content for me.
I desperately want the laser and the Sheep-on-a-rope added to WA and also have e.g. the Japanese, Chinese and Korean speechbanks from the Asian versions installed. :p

Do you want to become my representative and spokesperson?

Gosh I want them too!

Also, was the lazer a planned feature first, or where have you got your avatar from?

I got it from the original animated sprite, which Deadcode once got from the original artist at T17 (that is, apart from the red laser beam, which I added myself).
Same goes for the Sheep-on-a-rope and a black shotgun, the latter which I'd like to see as an anti-darksider gamma-ray gun. :)

Apparently, theses were dropped during development, as were the Worm Strike and the Bible Bomb.
The Bible sprite is still available in the game and can be used with The Fiddler, as well as the Worm Strike, which simply drops a couple of low health worms.

I'd like to see the Bible Bomb as massive cluster bomb, with many, yet very low-powered clustlets (the pages).
E.g. to cover a large area with very small explosions that can nudge mines & worms and heat up (but not easily detonate) oil barrels.

So much for features... :D

I wonder whether these unused sprites would ever release to the public... (With Team17's permission, of course)

I hope that this will only happen when they're implemented as hard-coded weapons.

Since we're on the subject of the lost content, what was the "landing zone" utility meant to have done? I could make a guess that its something to do with crate drops.

"landing zone" utility
Huh? Never heard of that.
In which game was it supposed to be?

Pretty much what you said 2 years ago about the subject. :p
I was hoping you would have remembered because I never checked it out when it was mentioned.

Read through this thread (http://forum.team17.co.uk/showthread.php?t=35851&highlight=landing+zone)

Later on, Muzer posts a link to an old thread about the utility but that thread no longer exists due to age.

Aha!
It's mentioned in (apparently) pre-release descriptions of the game:
Collect new Utility Crates: Super Speed-up, Invisibility, Double Damage, Laser Sight, Landing Zone and Crate Shower.
https://secure.team17.com/browse.html?area=detail&skuid=79

Maybe is was a utility to force crate drops to a certain spot, similar to how you can force the the game to drop crates with higher probabilities in a "Drop Zone", by dividing the terrain with girders.
http://www.angelfire.com/nd2/worms/team17tut.htm

Also note the "Super Speed-up", which I suppose was an earlier name for the fast-walk utility.

A couple of worms?!? Sounds very interesting I must say!

Zomg! That's on the back of the W:A cover! They wrote it on their cover although they dropped it!
(I've always been wondering what they meant by "Landezone" since I couldn't figure out which feature they were refering to)

Yes, IIRC, 5 worms are dropped, and start sliding around like regular worms wherever they hit the terrain, knocking around other worms that happen to be in their way.
Then they die and do the default suicide death damage.

Do they happen to survive sometimes?

I was wondering that myself. Maybe using LG beforehand, with a little girder cup to catch the unfortunate worms. Could end up with some additional worm zombies in your game :)

Squirminator2k

No. They fall and they kill themselves the moment they've stopped sliding about.

I'd like to see a "reinforcements" weapon, where you para-drop an additional worm, paying attention to the wind, so that you don't immediately drown him or land him on a mine.
