Hey guys, there is a rather long thread in the WA forum on this, but I thought I would put a quick post together to show people a map that I am currently working on for WR and WA.

The map title is Family Feud and features two Japanese style dojos, facing each other across a small Japanese garden. The map has been in development for WA for about a year now - delay after delay has plagued this one. Since WR has now finally been released, development on this map has once again resumed and looks like we are on the home stretch.

Rather than get super wordy about the map, I have attached several "in work" screenshots to get some opinions on it and to whet your appetite for the next in the MnP family of Worms maps. If things go according to plan, I am guessing that this map should be finished around the middle of September 2010. :)

They all look really cool! :)

What...?! Two years in the make??
No offense or anything, they of course look pretty good - but they are not really superior to any other map in the game, so I wonder if it's worth it spending so much time on a single map you play a few times enthusiastically and then it turns boring, suddenly?

Thurbo... always the positive one. :)

To clarify: The idea has been rolling around for a year. And I have been working on it on and off. To me, Thurbo, artwork is always worth the time. Since this artwork serves a purpose, I would probably say it is even more worthwhile. In the end, we do these maps for two reasons:

1. To play with our buddies in mostly hotseat games. And we play them way more than a few times. :)
2. To offer our online friends something cool to play on. We hope you enjoy it.

But can you actually get this into Worms Reloaded? The maps seems rather large. :p

Truly great work. I have no idea how you'd scale this down for Worms: Reloaded but if you succeed, it will be awesome. I guess this is the kind of map where you'd ideally want eight worm teams.

hundreds it's a pity but it seems like ALL 4 maps included in W:R have a major bug: when you get a worm on another one and use the drill, the worm gets drown no matter where the contact took place.

Please test it, I know it's NOT your fault, and I hope Team17 will soon fix it.

And thank you for all of your maps -they are awesome as well as this one ;)

Yeah I'm pretty sure that drill bug doesn't have anything to do with our maps or any custom maps for that matter. And I am sure they will fix it. :)

@Draconis and MtlAngelus: Scaling this map to work for WR is definitely a challenge. I did a few tests to see how I might do this. Obviously the dojos themselves cannot be changed or cut in any way. That leaves the garden. What I will be doing is: taking those two small shrines and pushing them towards each other. Any trees or flowers or what not will then be pushed forward (towards the viewer) so that the shrines appear to be slightly in the background. I have already tried doing this before I even started work on this map again, and have found that it actually looks good.

The annoying part is deciding whether to release this map as an island (stupid), or a cave with borders (also stupid). I'm really not sure yet.

This is why I put this suggestion (http://forum.team17.co.uk/showthread.php?t=41929) in the forums for Team17 to consider. Adding some border options would be like giving an artist another color to work with.

PS: Every kind of map is where you would ideally want 8 worm teams. ;)

Also, aren't worms larger in this game? You might actually have to scale up the dojos a bit. :p

Actually, when we were testing the 4 included MnP levels, we didn't have to change anything to scale. In fact, I thought initially the same thing, but found that there were only a few spots that I needed to make adjustments to, in order for worms to fit properly in the various rooms and such. This one is going to be quite fine, as I have yet to start play testing it even in WA.

We should be good to go. :)

As I said in the Steam forums, Hundreds, you did a good job. And I found a proper use for them:

- You can use the garden as a big BnG map (not the BnG mode you find in the game, for gods sake!)
- The two dojos can be combined together to create a special fort map.

What do you think about it?

What's so bad about making it an island?

@DWormkill: I don't think this map will be split up. In the end, it will fit quite nicely. The garden by itself would not be much of a map, and the concept kind of needs all the pieces to work.

@Plasma: Well.. two things:

1. I would need a few more precious pixels (probably 20 for each side) and I don't have em.

2. Maps like this, at least from our perspective, should be designed as if it was a photograph of an area of terrain, with more land and terrain leading off from each end. The majority of land on this planet are not islands.

This is why I think that along with pixel size, border options is the single biggest thing missing from WR. Take for instance a map designed around... say... the Battle of Normandy (which MnP has not yet done). The map would probably start with wrecked landing craft and floating dead worms on the left, with the beach gradually coming up toward the right. There would be a small stretch of beach with tank traps and barbed wire, increasing in grade until you would come to the enemy worm's pillboxes and gunnery stations. The map would not continue INDEFINITELY into France. It would end at some place just on the other side of the pillboxes. The way WR is NOW, we would have to place such a map in FULL BORDERS, giving it an ugly, claustrophobic, faux cave-like appearance and feel. The ONLY other alternative would be cutting France off right after the beach, giving no illusion of a greater piece of land that this battle was cut from.

Family Feud is probably going to take the claustrophobic path, instead of the fake island path. :(

Here's to hoping that Team17 (after they address the obvious more important bugs and stuff) makes some good strides towards making the landscape editor a bit more free for developers. :)

The majority of land on this planet are not islands.
Actually, they are.
The largest are called continents and you can fit the all into one photograph if you change you point of view, e.g. from orbit.

I knew someone was gonna rag on me for that comment. And I pretty knew it was gonna be you bonz. :)

EDIT: Hey Bonz and DWormkill, I am just about finished with this map. If you feel like beta testing it with me, I would really appreciate it. Just want to make sure it's decently balanced. I'm about to test all the pathways to make sure the worms fit, but I need a couple dedicated players to try a few games out on it.

Thanks,
Jay

Jay, whenever you have time, send me the lds and kev files of the map. I'll be glad to test it with you. =)

Really like the garden. Nice job.

Thanks Darkspark! I have had to compress the garden tremendously because of the map size limit (this map was originally designed for WA).

Hint Hint Team17! Map size increase! Hint Hint!

@DWormkill: I have sent you and bonz the files. We'll test it this week and it will go public after that.
