View Full Version : Getting Game Working - Thank You!

My old computer with XP on died ages ago and I've been trying to get WWP or WA to work on newer computers ever since while I wait for Worms Reloaded, which seems increasingly delayed. Nothing I tried would work.

Today however, following bits of advice from various parts of the forum I finally managed to get WA working, properly too on my Vista32 computer. As a brief thank you I thought I'd post my method as a list, in the hope of perhaps helping others to get the game working again too. I'm afraid I can't provide links to any of the required downloads as I don't know how, but they are all available with a simple search in this forum. Here we go.

1 - Install Game

2 - Download and run the "WA_Update-3.6.29.0" updater (as administrator)

3 - Download, unzip and place contents of "wormkit" into the WA directory.

4 - Download, unzip and place the contents of "wkColorFix" in the WA directory AND the 'wormkit modules' directory.

5 - Enable administrator for: WA.exe and wormkit.exe

6 - Download the "desktop.zip" file and extract the two .bat files to your WA directory.

7 - Enable admin modes for Worms 'Armageddon - Wormkit.bat'.

8 - Create shortcut of this .bat file onto desktop.

9 - Use this .bat file to run the game.

This works perfectly for me (although I haven't tried playing online yet). I am so pleased.

@Arthur:
You might be interested in editing this guide (http://worms2d.info/Installing_WA_on_Windows).

One more thing. As far as I know, the XP compatibility mode is not necessary for WA to work.

Enable XP SP2 compatibilty and administratorDon't do this. Both of these advice are known to cause other problems. Did doing this actually fix any real problems in your case?

What is "desktop.zip"?

@ Cybershadow - I have edited post and removed XP SP2 references. Having said that it worked fine for me.

@ Explorer - that guide didn't help me with installing the 'desktop' and 'colorfix' utilities.

@ poninja - I can't find a reference to it now. It contains 2 batch files which start the game without the explorer process running in the background which can cause problems withing the game. Maybe someone could provide a link to it. I found that I definitely needed it.

If you use batch files which terminate Windows Explorer, you don't need to use wkColorFix. wkColorFix uses a less destructive way to achieve the same goal, but may not be sufficient in all situations.

You can write one batch from here (http://worms2d.info/Troubleshooting_FAQ#The_game_colours_get_all_messe d_up), or use wkColorFix as CyberShadow said.

Can yo fix that?

I can fix the crashes, unless they're not in W:A's code.

But yes, I believe it would be possible to fix it using vectored exception handlers...
