I only just realised its been a year since the Paint Competition 2009, and seen as how i've done 2 Paint Competitions now and they actually turned out pretty good, I thought i'd create another one. Here is Last years competition (http://forum.team17.co.uk/showthread.php?t=38105) which Gardy won.

The rules are simply to draw something related to worms in Paint. So get going! you have a month to submit those entries. Competition closes on May 7th 2010, and the voting will hopefully be made on that day.

oh, point of interest: MS Paint now supports anti-aliasing. we may want to start calling this competition the "Pixel Art Competition" or something as to avoid confusion in the future as more people switch to Windows 7.

and, Jet, really nice gun you have there!

Oh dicks Aku, that is good. Although, there's something weird about the sword and the way it's bent. It also look rather round.

I'm also gonna go to an art/animation school. I have to get an education at the place im at right now though. Which will probably take about 2 years. 2 years of doing nothing artistic at all instead of scribbling your papers with doodles and stuff.

Yea I decided making something as well but to be honest I'm not quite contended with the result... maybe I've drawn too much stuff?
Mind the thing left down is meant to be a polishing cloth, I didn't know how to draw it :p

Akuryou13
15 Apr 2010, 19:22
that's.....well it's not a bad drawing, but I think that's the worst job of perspective I've ever seen. the right half of the picture is something of VERY high quality and would be a strong contender here. the left half looks a bit like someone puked all over MS Paint. I mean, what the heck is that blue thing? and what angle is that crossbow at and why is it melting?!

the pointing worm is VERY well drawn, as is the tank, the cliff ledge, the cloud, sun, etc etc. they all make a strong drawing, but that crossbow and general perspective of the worm closest to us is so wonky it destroys the rest of the image.

Thurbo
15 Apr 2010, 19:46
I'm not really sure what you mean...

Yes, the bow looks weird, it's the first time I've drawn one (and the >polishing cloth< doesn't look as one, too). I wanted the left worm looking very close to the camera, does it make him out of perspective?

Maybe if I would set the right worm slightly higher, I'm not sure wether that would work out, but maybe worth a look... Or the left worm down? I've probably drawn him too big or something... heck I just can't figure out what exactly I've done wrong :p

EDIT: Oh my god the bow is indeed absolutely out of perspective. I haven't even seen that :(

EDIT 2: I think I figured now! By placing the left worm down a bit thus it actually stands even closer to us without changing its size it seems it all fits very good... I think. I bet I have to redraw the bow and the plishing cloth completely... but I just don't know how to draw them! Who's gonna help me? :p

I bet I have to redraw the bow and the plishing cloth completely... but I just don't know how to draw them! Who's gonna help me? :pall of the above. the left worm is too high up. the top of his hat is visible when clearly we're viewing the picture from below the hat. the "polishing cloth" as you put it is a completely unnecessary addition to the image that just destroys most of the body of that worm it's blocking, and generally just drags the image down. the cliff ledge doesn't make much sense either. it makes an awkward curve that tries to provide the left worm a place to stand but that area shouldn't be there at all given the angle of the rest of the cliff.

and if I'm pointing out details, I REALLY have to question: you used the team17 colors for the left worm and a completely different set of colors for the worm on the right. that makes no sense. both should be the same color, or at least shades of a similar color. right now the worm on the right is some kind of almost purple-pink while the one of the left is a VERY warm orange red. it's like they're lit by two completely different colors of light. skin gets lighter or darker between different people, but it doesn't change color entirely.

I do believe that is meant to be a log, or fallen tree.

Crap I should have used more details like here (http://i597.photobucket.com/albums/tt52/Thurbo1/ForumComic9.jpg?t=1268926005), but it seems some people are able to point out what it is (I started wondering what cliff you were talking about at all :D)

and if I'm pointing out details, I REALLY have to question: you used the team17 colors for the left worm and a completely different set of colors for the worm on the right. that makes no sense. both should be the same color, or at least shades of a similar color. right now the worm on the right is some kind of almost purple-pink while the one of the left is a VERY warm orange red. it's like they're lit by two completely different colors of light. skin gets lighter or darker between different people, but it doesn't change color entirely.

Actually the right one uses T17 colours as well. I've taken them from a Space Oddity pic whiches scenery was in a "warmer, natural light" environment. I decided to use darker colours for the left worm because he's being in the tree's shade. He's meant to be at least...

And however, whats wrong with worms having brighter or darker skins? I think YOU've always been the one complaining about being creative or having worms humanized :p

I'm also currently fixing my pic, the log and the polishing cloth look recognizable already and I've set the left worm down a bit. I just can't draw cross bows though

And finally @poninja... Why the h**l do I like your pics so pretty much? Maybe it's because he's constantly changing his own style and all that details in the worms' faces which makes his pics really, REALLY interesting. I just love it :D

I suggest tweaking the shading or something. wow.

And however, whats wrong with worms having brighter or darker skins? I think YOU've always been the one complaining about being creative or having worms humanized :p.... you have got to be the most color-inept person I have ever even HEARD of. the SOURCE of a color is irrelevant. look back at any given painters' old work. just because rembrandt uses a color for skin in one painting doesn't mean that same color is usable in another painting. what you've done is use two COMPLETELY DIFFERENT COLORS for your skin tones. as in, the two are entirely seperate. nothing similar. if it was two completely different species of beings then it might be believable, but given it's two of the same species lit by different levels of the same light, you've completely missed what it should look like. standing in a shadow makes a color darker. it doesn't make that color change to a warmer or cooler variation. that color on the right has far more blue than the one on the left. check your hex code in whatever art program you use, if you don't believe me.

Thurbo
16 Apr 2010, 21:52
Im not sure wether you realized that the true colours of the worms and the shadings are not brighter or darker but actually a different tone. I think I've done the same thing with the clouds for example, didn't see that's wrong :-/

However that's how far I've come now (tweaking the tree's flatness, placing the left worm down and replacing the "puke" by a real polishing cloth) What I've not done yet are the missing bow which I tried to draw two times now and the drawing just always ends up in crap :( and the left worm's shades, although I don't think I'm gonna fix them since I like it how it is.
It's an old version, you may ignore it :D (http://i597.photobucket.com/albums/tt52/Thurbo1/Competition2ndtry.jpg?t=1271445514)

... joking. Actually I appreciate you're trying to help me but this time I just don't agree with you. In my oppinion the colours fit very well to the image and the warmer appearience could be caused as a reflexion of the tree's warm brown. Didn't you show me all those worms having reflexions from objects surrounding them?
It's quite clear I don't understand much about this stuff now. I still have time to learn it, so anybody might clearly point out how it works? :D

Edit: Oh, LOL! I just tried out using the right worms' colours, only DARKER. Now see what it has turned out. I think changing the tone is absolutely needed in this case. I mean, he looks just too much red. As if he had a sunburn.

Edit: Oh, LOL! I just tried out using the right worms' colours, only DARKER. Now see what it has turned out. I think changing the tone is absolutely needed in this case. I mean, he looks just too much red. As if he had a sunburn.that's because you left the saturation where it was. think about it, black has no color saturation at all, so the darker a tone gets the less saturated it would get as well. try knocking the saturation down a bit on that edit and see the result.

and, of course, it's entirely possible that it'd be better to use the left worm's color to replace that of the worm on the right. it just depends on the rest of the image. experiment. it may be that neither coloration works entirely, and you'll need to tweak the colors to find one that works better for what you want. don't stick to the team17 colors just cause they're official.

granted, I don't think it's really necessary to have them 2 different colors at all. the worm in the tree's shade is close enough to the edge of that shade that he'd be getting most of the light from the sun anyway.

Thurbo
17 Apr 2010, 14:26
I wouldn't say any colours T17 artists used are official since there are many images with varying colour settings, I use them for not having to adjust them myself.

does it matter WHY you're using the colors?! I just suggested that you DON'T do so. your reasons are irrelevant as it's still better to use your own variations no matter WHAT your motivation for copying is.

Thurbo
17 Apr 2010, 21:39
Hey I am using an own variation now. I copied the colours to see where they are exactly (In this colour panel in Paint you know) because before I just didnt get them, it turned out either too pink or too human skin coloured. I'm simply not good enough in this stuff to adjust them myself yet.

Akuryou13
18 Apr 2010, 04:16
I'm simply not good enough in this stuff to adjust them myself yet.which is why you do it anyway because that TEACHES you to be good enough. you don't have to go all crazy with it, just figure out a general area where skin-tones are found on the color selection, and pick from that area most of the time. you don't need to start getting into warmer and cooler skin tones based on the surroundings or anything crazy like that.

I made it in Photoshop using as few tools as possible, which should be following the rules, considering I used fewer tools than MS Paint itself is capable of nowadays. You need to look at the full size version to see its fully aliased glory.

I can't remember if the Windows 7 Paint has tablet pressure support like my "Paint-equivalent" does, though. If not, whoops.

If not, whoops.the spirit of the competition holds, though, as you didn't use any fancy tools or anything along those lines. you used the aliased pen and probably a color fill. that's the idea here.

if your entry doesn't count because of a little pressure sensitivity then neither does mine. and that seems a tad silly.

Just a reminder that there's 2 day's left until the voting thread gets made, we have 8 entries anyway, not as much as the previous paint competitions, but oh well.

Still, if your planning on entering, there's just 2 day's left so hurry up.
