Hi guys,

Just dug up my old Reunited/Reinforcements disk, and low and behold...it don't work on XP! I've heard that some people have got it working using DosBox, and according to this site -

http://www.dosbox.com/comp_list.php?showID=656&letter=W

- the latest version of DosBox supports it. I'm a bit of a Dosnovice, so if anyone could explain step by step how to get it working, I would be a happy bunny indeed.

Cheers!

That's a lot more faff than just running it in DOSBox.

I've currently got dosbox set up so it mounts an image of the CD and the directory worms is installed in on startup.

In dosbox.conf you can add lines to the bottom that will be run every time dosbox starts up. I've got the following so a directory is mounted as C: and E: is the worms CD

MOUNT C ..\OLDGAMES
IMGMOUNT E ..\..\Images\Worms1.cue -t iso

If you want to use the real CD rather than the image, take a looksee here for the right command - http://www.dosbox.com/wiki/MOUNT#Mounting_a_CD-Rom_drive

Also you might want to use a different directory to OLDGAMES.

To install worms you'll have to navigate to the CD drive and run setup ( type E: then just type setup). Following through the default settings works if I remember rightly.

Then navigate to C: (type C: ), and into the worms directory (type cd worms) and type worms to run worms!

Cheers guys! Managed to get it working fine! Even managed to get the multiplayer working over IPX, through DOSbox. Man this is such a hark back to the good old days! There's just something about the original Worms, not at all lost it's charm!

One question though - I seem to remember being able to change the voices for the teams (United/Reinforcements) - anybody remember how to do this? Are there particular files in the install folder I need to replace, or is there an additional program I need to use?

Good thing I kept my old ME as well. I've downloaded dos box but the game wouldn't just start for some reason :(

I followed the instructions below, pretty much to the letter, and it works fine...

You can play Worms United in XP using a DOS emulator called DosBox. Download it & install. If you are familiar with DOS command prompt then it will make things easier but I'll detail what to do here. Also read the readme file in DosBox for more info.

Here's how to do it:

1/ Create a folder on any drive you want. This will become the C: drive in DosBox. I create a folder on the root of my G: drive (where I have all my games). I called it 'oldgames'. Make sure the name of the folder is no longer than 8 characters with NO apaces.

2/ Run DosBox. You see the command prompt with a flashing cursor at Z: . Put the Worms United CD in your CD drive. My CD drive is drive R: in Windows. Take note of the drive letter of your CD drive. You will need this too!

3/ DosBox doesn't know where the C: drive or the CD Drive it needs to use are so you have to tell it. You do this by 'mounting' the drives. Once this is done DosBox has both of these drives & you can then proceed to install & play the game. Read on....

4/ At the flashing cursor in DosBox type the following & press return:

mount c: g:\oldgames

This tells DosBox to use the directory on G: that I created called 'oldgames' as the C: drive in DosBox. You get a message to say the drive has been mounted. Remember to replace 'g:\oldgames' with whatever drive & folder name you used.

5/ Now we need to 'mount' the CD Drive so we can load the game. Type the following line at the flashing cursor:

mount d: r:\ -t cdrom

This tells DosBox to mount my CD Drive (Drive R: in XP) as drive D: . Remember to use whatever driver letter your CD Drive is in XP!

6/ Now we have a C: drive & a D: drive (CD-Rom) mounted in DosBox :) . Lets install the Worms United!

7/ Again at the prompt type the following. Do not type '(Press return)' obviously! :

d: (Press return)
install (Press return)

Worms United now starts the install process. Basically this is the standard install procedure. Just accept all the defaults that the install asks you for. When installed use the up/down keys to select 'Exit Installer'. You are now back at the command prompt once again. The game is installed. Now lets PLAY :)

8/ We now have to change drives to the C: drive where Worms is installed. Type the following:

c: (Press return)
cd\ worms (Press return)
worms (Press return)

9/ Worms United will now start & away you go! Hold sown the 'Alt' key & press 'Enter' for full screen. Press again to back to the window mode.

CHOICE.COM is not implemented well in Dosbox. When it says "Loading opening movie, press S to skip", you can press N to view the original opening, as waiting will not work.

Any info for custom disks? (As my other thread in "Games" forum )
