As in earlier versions. Will the be possible to make custom levels?(In .jpg, .png, .bmp or any other common windows image format)

Map Editor is already confirmed.

Oh, I haven't noticed that :O

A map editor is NOT the same as the possibility to save jpgs and bmps...
I don't think this is possible. At least not in an official way. I heard D Wormkill is gonna tweak this game.

Who knows. The beta isn't released yet so there is a chance there will be possible in the release date. :)
For now, I just have to pray to my lord.

Thurbo

I pray it will be enabled too :p
This game might differs from WA though and you cant fix this game as hard as WA.

It has a map editor but it might not support importing maps made with something other then the offical map editor.

Thurbo

There'll always be players finding a way to get own landscapes in, no matter if the game supports this feature or not (e.g. Worms 3D and 4 Mayhem).

Exactly....and how I said in previous posts, the important thing that there is a map editor. Why? Because with it included in game, you can save and download the maps of others in-game. This is the only manner to play with others' maps, right?
Good...if there isn't a gif or png importer included, this isn't a problem. The reason is that you can use an external program (converter, etc...) to create your maps and then import them in-game.
With the map-editor included and the downloading system inside, you can play with every map you want.
If there wasn't a map editor, we wouldn't be able to do this. In few words, without it, we will face another situation like Worms 4 Mayhem.

I need to see the format of files before doing tweaking (or modding, seen that tweak file doesn't exist on Reloaded). However, I analized, from the videos of Youtube, some interesting things. Do you know the theme? Well, if you watch it correctly, it's in 2D. This means you can easily modify it (probably it's a targa file).
The 2D pixel shading animation on the background (example: on Cheese Moon, you'll see a kind of spaceship with a floating eye, more or less) is, in my opinion, a kinda of mpeg or video. Team17 has drawn the animations, put them together and made a clip. In fact the animation repeat the same moves and it is stucked on screen. If it is true, we can modify it with another video and convert it to the correct format. Having a customised background....and this is the beginning! =P

Just check some videos of your own: you realise that the themes are in 2D (the cheese pixels as example). Adding the fact that pixel shading involves the form of an object, not his colour.

If we can import maps, would be nice if there is a fairly high upper limit on the size. I've gotten used to playing on large maps in WA.

VERY much agreed. All of my maps at mnpp.net are wayyy bigger than the old standard from W:A. That specific ability is THE deciding factor as to whether me - and all my friends - buy this game or not.

24bit 1920x1960 maps would be bad enough, extra large ones would be notably worse! Anyone on ADSL 1 without a 8mbit connection would be waiting several minutes before they can start a game as the map transfers hell dial-up users won't stand a chance at all.

Thurbo

And large maps destroy the gameplay for several reasons too; they should be used for nothing at all but rope races (though the Ninja Rope is pretty much useless for using it in races now).

If Team17 included the ability of using imported maps, the background would be simply set to black thus it was no problem at all. What do you think?

If you import map, I think the background picked will be random...you can have construction behind you or cheese moon. And as I said, you can change the background on your own...if it is, of course, a video animation.

Thurbo

You dont have the game yet right? There are a few old maps of Worms Armageddon included, the Ice map for example has a black background.

Of course it was possible it would just use one of the theme backgrounds as well.

Not everyone here can afford 8mbit ADSL 1 plans or can have affordable ADSL 2 in there home. Telstra/Bigpond have the most coverage but charge about 100% more then companies using a different supplier which likely won't have as broad a coverage.

70$ per month for 12 gigabye quota and 8mb ADSL 1 connection from Telstra
75$ per month for 12 gigabye quota and 8mb ADSL 1 connection from Aanet
60$ per month for 12 gigabye quota and 8mb ADSL 2 connection from Telstra, bundled with there phone line.

45$ per month for No Limit quota ADSL 2 connection from Exetel (uses Eftel equipment Iirc), (obvious best route but not supplied in my area >.>)

What the f...? You surely pay for the connection. Here in Italy...alice Flat 2MB connection for 20 € per month. Unlimitied.

Cathulhu

Ouch. I'm paying 40€ for a 18Mbit connection including a nationwide landline phone flat and an internet flat without any traffic limit or fair use policy.

Oh we can get 1.5mb ADSL 1 connections for 45~$ with 12gig quota.

I just learned again that Germany has quite cheap internet connections. If only games wouldn't be released censored, i'd be hapy.

Thurbo
8 Mar 2010, 16:18
Only games that are really, really brutal (for non-sense actually, as you can play unbrutal games like Worms also for fun) get censored...
because many parents just don't care what their kids are playing.
It's necessary. The population itself is too stupid to pay attention, thus there has to be an extra law.

franpa

germany censors more then what you might think Thurbo. Australia bans anything that doesn't fit into MA15+ or lower, so some companies will censor there games to get them into that category. Germany I think goes furthrer and censors stuff that already falls under M and MA.

Hey - just adding my two cents...

I just exported one of my larger maps - Titanic B. It's dimensions are 2824 x 1280. I exported it at 90% quality as a JPEG (90% because anything higher is really not that discernible for this application - at least for me). The file size is only 564 KB (about half a meg). I would say that most 1.5 Connections would be fine with something like that.

I'm not all for gigantic maps just because the option is there. I have seen maps that are just ridiculous in size, and I highly doubt anyone actually plays them. But if you look at some of our "Next Gen" maps (without size limits) on our website (mnpp.net) and compare them with their older versions WITH the old size limitations, you can see why I fully believe that larger map sizes should not only be stressed in this new game, but it should be the NORM.

A lot of monitors even display such high resolutions that a standard 1920 pixels could probably fit on one screen.

It may sound like I am worried that Team17 won't allow larger map siuzes than the now 10 year old Worms Armageddon, but I'm really not. In fact, I'd be quite surprised if they decided NOT to do it.

Jay

yes i'm informed about Australian censorship ;) It's a bit TOO hard but whatever... be glad Worms isn't that brutal then

Example? For MW2, I heard Australia censored the mission No Russian. They called it No Russian, just some IW *****es!

I know more than enough examples ;) Did you know Japanese government censored Rayman because of his lilac shirt? It's the colour of death there ;)

However he wears a blue shirt in that country

Large maps wouldn't be a problem if it saved them so you didn't have to reload each time.

The 360 version just seems to stretch the image so you don't actually get to see more of the map if you run in 1920x1080. It makes things fairer for low res players but it seems way too zoomed in compared to what some players would be used to on WA. There is a zoom out option but the game isn't really playable in that view and it's not the same as displaying the map in a custom resolution.

franpa
10 Mar 2010, 10:08
well, if they did implement a SHA 256 or similar hash system so that you don't need to redownload maps all the time, then large maps are okay. Would still greatly reduce the number of dialup players though.

With regards to Worms games and PC, I think they will follow the Worms 2, W:A and WWP trend and have custom resolutions affect your FoV.

If the maps were compressed for quick transfer and decompressed when loading/playing it shouldn't be too much of a problem, same for any other user content (if that'll be available).

Yes if only they would've thought about some kind of map compression

Anyhoos, I'm just hoping using custom maps is possible at all, but if it is, tight restrictions as they were present in WA when it came out are likely to have relaxed. Remember the game came out in 1998 when most ppl were on a 56k connection with possibly a (very) limited PC.

PNG is already compressed and I doubt they would go for a lossy format as what you see wouldn't necessarily be what you get when loaded in the game in such a situation.
