View Full Version : The 3D Cartoon Worm Model

This is my cartoon worm I created in Autodesk Maya 8.5. I was a freshman in high school when I created this model. I'm a sophmore now. I found these worms online on the Team 17 website as I was looking for cartooning tutorials and I thought that these were simpleistic and amusingly cartoony characters.

Please do not reuse this image in any way (for example do not post this online and say that you created this). I put some good effort into creating this model and would hate for someone to steal the credit away.

To see a few more of my models please visit my Picasa Web album (http://picasaweb.google.com/Mlalmond) and post a comment there while you're at it. I'm still trying to increase my collection of models right now. Currently, only five models are up.

Thank you for your time! Please feel free to post comments below.

Nah, just kidding man. It's a good model. Kinda rough on the edges, but still good.

Didn't liked the mouth. You can't tell what's his expression

Didn't liked the mouth. You can't tell what's his expressionvery good point. the modelling looks damn nice but you don't seem to have a grasp of basic cartooning to back up the skills in modelling. keep up the good work, but you may wanna look up cartooning guides as well to make you even better.

Yeah I'll have to agree here. I think the worm is nice, but the mouth seems somewhat off-putting. Partially because of the inky black void inside it but also it's shape. It seems more like a hole cut into him than an actual mouth.

The rest is good though. Keep it up.

For me, its the fact that most of the mouth looks like he's screaming, but the edges are in a smile.

It's got different flexes.

I like the eyes, and the hands look pretty good, well, just that the thumb seems to be misplaced. Also, quite a boring pose :P

I'll agree with what everyone said here about the mouth [imo, not easy to tell if he's scared of really happy] but I think it looks decent for a 3D pic.

Liketyspli: Yeah, to a certain perspective the mouth does give the worm a sort of boring pose. Then again, this is my first cartoon model ever! Which isn't that bad in my opinion.

Saffya: Yeah, most cartoons have over-exaggerated expressions which I think is important but my skills in cartooning lack in this particular model. This model became an experiment in its later creation and was given blendshape expressions (not sure how many here is familiar with Maya terminology, just know that he has more than one expression). I'll see if I can upload the pics of his other expressions later.

shadowman: Not sure if this the correct response to your comment but this is just a basic model that has not been rigged but when it has, it can be repositioned to whatever pose you want.

Plasma: Actually, he is supposed to be screaming but I need to figure out the proper cartoony pose for it to make it look like its screaming.

Melon: I'll try to raise the color value a bit. I'll try to get the outcome up online sometime.

Akuryou13: Actually, my birthday is coming up and my father told me that he had just ordered me two animation books/guides about 400 pages each! The books cover a large number of subjects but most focus on the characters so I should be able to improve on my cartooning. Yet, if you guys got any suggestions on cartooning worms, help me out!

Pyramid: Yeah, from the modeler's point of view the model may have a look that matches the vision in his head that may seem right but the truth of the matter is that I need all of your feedback to really get the best outcome. All your comments are appreciated!

MtlAngelus: Hmmm... not sure how I'm going to fix the edges but I'll see what I can do...

Thanks again for all your feedback. Please, keep them coming and be sure to check out my other models on my picasa web album!
By the way, if anyone has any tips on making cartoons, please feel free to drop me a message anytime! Thank you in advance!

Didn't literally mean the edges, just that it's rough all around. :p

I've had a look at some of your stuff, and the navy submarine is great. Awesome work on that.

Like the worm too, its pretty good for a first try.

MtlAngelus: Well, that's jpg compression for you! It naturally gets roughed up when converted to this particular format.

Shadowmoon: Thanks! There are a few texture errors on the submarine but since my computer is terrible, it takes to long to fix it and then re-render it.

I wasn't making a comment. I was replying to people complaining about the bloody pose.

is a list of a few. most of them have good stuff.

I would also suggest maybe finding the book Action! Cartooning, because it's absolutely amazing and actually teaches you to draw rather than how to draw in one specific style like most drawings books.

Not the crappy compression. The modeling is rough, the texturing is rough, the pose is rough, the shading is rough... all around it's... rough. :p
