View Full Version : 3D (FutureWorm-esque) avatar generator

I really liked FutureWorm's avatar. In fact, I actually went and wasted a few hours making this:

http://thecybershadow.net/misc/3davatar/

One obvious example is my avatar. I also tried to reconstruct FutureWorm's avatar for comparison. Here's my attempt rendered at 100 frames:

Good work, Sir.

It gets a little buggy if you try a second time though - the GIF it creates is a much larger filesize due to an added, slower section of animation in which it ignores the proportion you set.

Work-around: re-save your image in a different format and re-upload.

Some kind of caching issue maybe?

This gives me an idea. Basically what I did with my old avatar that displayed a different message depending on the forum skin used when viewing, except using this interlaced technique. I think it should work...

But I'm too damn lazy to try it, plus I don't have a gif editor at hand...

This one doesn't work that way tho, because it's got proper perspective, so things become smaller when they are further away.

Anyway, I want to get this two merged together, interlaced.
I found a free gif program but I'm yet to figure it out. In the mean time, if anyone could do it, I would really appreciate it. :P

I'll try again in a while.

edit2: Somehow, they are now 200kb in size each... Maybe it's what m3ntal pointed out or maybe it happened when I changed the color palette... I have no clue.

Tried to make it smaller with that program I downloaded but whenever I edit it and save it the file size becomes over 100kb...

CyberShadow
24 Jun 2009, 16:31
I tried several "GIF optimizers" and none of them could produce files smaller than what ImageMagick spits out. So if my webapp makes GIFs too big, you're probably better off trying to shave off bytes from the number of frames and such.

MtlAngelus
24 Jun 2009, 16:37
That's what I tried actually. Removed half of the frames for testing and ended up with 100kb for some reason. :p
It doesn't have any option to optimize so that's probably it.

It won't work when posting it because the background in the post is different to the background color behind avatars

But then it moves too fast compared to the rest of the spinning avatars. I actually had set each frame to last twice as long to compensate.

You can make text and fine details more readable by decreasing the thickness or increasing the camera distance (which reduces the perspective effect).

thomasp: I think you should try with a lower proportion, so the entire avatar fits in the frame when it's rotating :)

SupSuper
25 Jun 2009, 00:16
It looks like it doesn't clean-up properly, if I start changing the amount of frames, it ends up overlapping with the previously-made avatar.

Edit:
Also check out my profile, the forum seems to completely screw up thumbnails of these: http://forum.team17.co.uk/image.php?u=234&dateline=1245885382&type=thumb

I did, slightly, but to be honest if I was to do this properly I'd draw a thing for the purpose. Maybe take something from the Apathy Clan comic thread.

It rather amuses me to just take the high-density avatar I used before and mindlessly apply this to it. (Although to get that effect I had to use two separate thresholds so the benefit is slightly lost.)

SupSuper
25 Jun 2009, 18:29
Not really, it just harms if they're complete douches about it, I mean some people might get the idea that if something is kept under wraps, there's a reason behind it. But clearly such people are morons.

In any case I'm sure someone can just post something like "oh CyberShadow showed us this over IM/IRC/whatever and it quickly caught on" to calm them, it's not like we have to be such dicks about it either.

Still I've never seen any other forum so paranoid over fads, when everyone started using manga avatars or whatever people didn't lose it.

And Raphael is cool.

But shrewd.

I thought it was "crude".

Might just be me mishearing lyrics or something.

Hmmm. I always remember it being "shrewd" but I've just found the intro on YouTube and it sounds like "rude" to me.

I guess it could be "crude". It's definitely not "shrewd", though. I may have to find some DVDs. I forgot how much I loved that cartoon! :)

Doesn't rhyme as well with "party dude", though.

I think the next version should allow us to choose color. An input field for hex or rgb values would be nice.

And more options are needed for the scanline, like thickness and speed!

More options = less consistency. I left out some options on purpose. I might add them in the "next version", assuming it'll ever happen :)

Clearly now you should turn W:A into a 3D spinning interlaced delight, pleasing both 2D and 3D fans at once!

Are you sure that applies just to this forum?
