Can Team 17 comment, and will it have online multiplayer?

I think I saw a comment from Spadge somewhere that it won't have online multiplayer due to the issues of the app automatically quitting and therefore the game dropping whenever a call is received.

Boo! D:
That doesn't affect Touch users, the option should be enabled at least for iPod Touch. :(

It should at least allow online play over WiFi when the phone is set to flight mode, i.e. all GSM/GPRS/UMTS radio turned off.
The game could even switch to flight mode automatically after telling the user that he won't be able to recieve calls.

I have an iTouch. I wanna have some epic online play. That's what Worms is! Sides, the game "Snails" which is basically a Worms clone has online WiFi play.

If they did want to implement online play, they would've had it without a ranking system, plain an simple. I rather suspect that they didn't want to add such a cost of programming online play and running a server for just an iPod game.

Mr Church

Um, it's not that hard to add online play and a server or two. Lots of games do it. I have several online games on my iPod Touch. It isn't really that hard. Besides, I think they learned their lesson about not including online in ASO.

Yes, but what about Iphone?

It's the same programming, numb nuts. The iPhone is an iPod touch with phone built in.

I worded it wrong. What I should have said is read the 2nd post of this thread, thats why online play might not come for a while.

Its nothing to do with overall difficulty of making online play available.

As I can see it, and as bonz mentioned, the only way an iPhone/iPod Touch version of Worms could support online play is to have the phone in Airplane mode and connected to a WiFi network (obviously just connected to a Wifi network for the iPod Touch). Given I have no idea how to code stuff for iPhone OS, this may not even be possible.

To clarify, the main reason why the iPhone (not the iPod Touch) has troubles with online play is that when you receive a call whatever app you're currently using will quit and the "Phone" app will start. It currently isn't possible to have background apps, and if you're connected to a GPRS network you won't be able to receive a call and play an online game at the same time. Obviously if you're playing a game online and your phone rings the game will quit and you'll then have similar problems to the WOW/WOW2 games on DS and PSP where people argue about who quit on who.

Will make a suggestion to admins. Not really many threads for it at the moment though...

I've been playing worms and having not played a worms game since WFUS was released, Team17 have definitely done a good job with this game. Initial impressions say that some of the controls could do with a little refining, like where you have to select a target, such as teleport, homing missile and air strike since as you drag the target across the screen it seems to lag noticeably. I'm using an iPhone 3G. Other than that, its a good game!

double post mod-merge

Worms is currently the #8 most-popular paid app in the app store and the #5 most popular game. Nice going Team17 :D

I figured online would be added. I am so glad this came out when it did. I was about to leave for a boring family reunion, looked for a new app, saw it, and ****ed myself. The controls are fine, I think. The only problem I have with it is that sometimes it crashes, but I may just need to reset my iPod. They'll fix it in the next update, I bet.

Waaa, glad to see good feedback in here, as all websites and forums I've seen report terrible controls implementation on this version.
Currently wondering if I should move from WiMo to Iphone, worms could be a strong point, so more feedback would be welcome!

Get an iPhone. The controls for Worms are fine. It's just fatties who have fingers thicker than my head keep hitting all the wrong controls. They say you can't zoom in far enough, but if you're 90 years old, stop playing Worms and write your will. It's not that hard to see. Also, to jump you tap your worm, not the space around it. Aiming is fine, moving is fine. Make sure you touch the outside edge of the screen, not the ****ing middle. No one ever understands that kind of stuff. Fine controls mixed with dumb asses never turn out well.

The only part of the Worms controls I'm struggling getting used to is the two-finger drag to pan around the landscape. For some reason (probably because out of all Worms games, the game I played most was WA on "PC"...) I always seem to want to single-finger drag in the centre of the screen, but this then ends up moving the crosshair or having my worm jump into the abyss :p

Not really sure how else that could be implemented, short of having arrows on the edge of the screen to pan around, but that wouldn't allow for diagonal panning.

I bought it in the german App Store and it is German, but as in all worms titles you can change the languages of the teams and the sounds of the worms is nearly the only language you hear when you are playing, there is not much text while playing. If you want to play in english anyway you have to change the language of your whole iPhone/iPod touch (just some clicks in the iPhone settings).

My thoughts about Worms for iPhone:

First of all: i want real Multiplayer over the WWW ;)
But anyway, i hope you guys gonna bring out some updates, there are still some bugs to fix (especially with the controls), nothing serious, but sometimes it is a little bit annoying. Anyway, i don't regret the bought (4€ is a very fair price) and i allready gave it a 5 star review.

p.s.: Can anyone from team17 say something about number of sold copies in the App-Store, seems to be very popular, since it is the most purchased App

Yeah, that's kind of hard to adjust to. I have trouble with it too.

That's the thing, I have my iPhone in English, and so I want all my software to be in English as well... but as the App store has recently been localised, and Worms has a localised Dutch version, I have no choice but to install the Dutch one. Which I won't do...

I think what Krexx is saying is that if you have your iPhone language set to English (as you seem to say you do) that the game will be in English. After checking with one of the programmers the game takes its language setting from the iPhone so you should be able to play the game in English if thats what you want.

Jesus, what have you got against fat people or old people? If they pay for the game all the better! And with big fingers ive had zero problems playing on the iPhone.

Downloaded the game yesterday for my iPhone 3GS - it's amazing. $5 was a totally fair price, as the game is easily worth $10.

My one complaint is that even on my 3GS, the game is noticeably laggy at times. Not always, mind you, but it's a bit surprising.

However, I think we can all agree that little in life is more satisfying than lobbing a Holy Hand Grenade on your mobile device.

Mate, I was kidding. I love old people. And fat people. Without them, I would be lost. No Biggest Loser? Life would be awful. Kidding. I was just saying that people fat finger the controls and have poor eye sight, apparently because I can see the Worms just fine.

Just chipping in to say that this game really is a lot of fun. It feels a lot like Worms Open Warfare 2 on the DS/PSP, which is an added bonus (I'm sort of assuming it is based on the same codebase) since that game was also brilliant.

So kudos to T17 on this, I'm definatley excited to see what updates bring to it in the future!

If you read the post directly above your one, you'll see there's a link to Worms on the App Store. It is the UK app store though, so you might have to search for it in non-UK app stores.
