I present to you, the Paint Competition of 2009!

I've noticed that the fanart section isn't as active as it used to be, So, hopefully a new Paint Competition will be interesting to people.

The rules are simple. You just draw something in paint, but it must have worms in it.

For anyone interested, here is Last years paint competition (http://forum.team17.co.uk/showthread.php?t=35834), which saw Philby4000 take the crown.

The competition will end on March 8th, the poll that decides the almighty winner will be created on that day.

And thats pretty much it. Now, get those paintbrushes, and get to work!

Someone has to be the biotch... let it be me, then. I'll be gone in a couple of days anyway so no one will care...:p
The Rules - In Depth
Rule 1:
New threads must contain Art in the first post (see rule 3), with the exception of the "Official FanArtist of the Month" threads and associated voting threads. If you want to do a request or competition thread, you must start off with an example piece of art that is original. (If you haven't got any way to create art, then ideally could you solicit a starter image from someone else -- and credit it, of course? An original one, mind.) Threads with "Art Coming Soon" will be removed -- the thread needn't be posted until the art is. If you want a sigworm or avatar, then post in Avatar Absurdity

Sorry, I didn't think it was still on. In a few competitions last year that weren't FAOTM's, people didn't include art in their first post and they were left off.

They're not. Most of them are original drawings, albeit always in the same style and facing the same way.

I'm not saying they're the same drawing... just that you don't change your pictures at all...
There's no action lines, no elaborated background, not even a interesting feature, just generic bazookas and grenades with generic worms that are always looking the same, but sometimes, wearing a helmet...

You could try The GIMP, but I don't think there's anything as awful as Paint for macs ;) Could just use the pencil tool in Photoshop and set it to a really low resolution I guess - that'd achieve a similar effect.

Allow me to refresh your memories: "i have drawn a pic of myself..only useing adobe" (http://forum.team17.co.uk/showpost.php?p=464965&postcount=55)

And i should think stuff through before putting it into a comic. The art isn't much of a problem now as it used to be. In the other hand, the comic language is still beyond my knowledge.:-/

I must confess I don't recall his worms. I have spent a fair amount of time away from the forum, though.

And that was one of his at-least-partly-decent coloured pictures. Older ones were distinctly green!

We never quite figured out what was going on in his head...

They've been saying it's been going downhill for YEARS! "There's not enough people" to "There's too many people" to "Too much crappy art, it's clogging up the forum" to "There's not enough artists around anymore"! I wouldn't be surprised if there was a post made five weeks after the forum's creation that said it was going downhill!

Fact.

I hate to admit, but i think he should've stiked with sprite comics. I remember a time when he mocked aku regarding some pink outfit... that was fairly funny, actually.

But hey, there's place and time for everyone in the world. I think he would turn out a fine politician. We'd be better off with him than with some we have already. :p

Yeah, there really aren't enough artists around these days. I try my hardest but let's face it, HK, Slick, Splapp, Philby, yourself and probably others I am rudely omitting from this post are far, far superior. Heck, I miss mocoworm, too.

Sometimes I feel those of us who are left are the life-support machine this forum's art community relies upon. Often I wonder whether it's worth saving. Usually I find myself back here wanting to be better at art, more entertained by other people and pining for days gone by.

Indeed, Mr. Plasma. But you have to admit there was an apex of activity and art, even if we can't recognize it at the time it's happening. Have you forgoten about Eye on Legs? Hk comic? Hell... what about Battery Chicken? That was great stuff...

The fact is that people grow out of the forum, literaly. People around here are mostly children with the exception of a few, like myself, you and many others.

These exceptions usually make the forum worth the while, posting good stuff (cause, of course, we're more experienced) and keeping people interested. It's a great nursery for upcoming artists that still have to learn the very principles of drawing, digitalizing, colouring and etc. And that's why i tried to help and criticize my ass out when i use to hang around here.

These older people were drawned here by the "worm culture" t17 has successfully created and by the art of the other older (or younger but talented nonetheless) artists. With the "worm culture" disappearing, good artists rarely come and the ones that are here grow out/lose interest.

Unless something major happens, i don't see much future for this. And with something i mean a new game, some batch of kickass artists, adding some other interest to the forum and so on.

But the way this is, it won't likely last much longer. The fanart, i mean.

For sure. We, the fanartists, are the blood of the forum. When the forum gets cut it bleeds. Some blood is lost but the rest coagulates and forms a nice protective scab. New blood is generated and the cycle continues.

I aim to be this forum's scab for as long as I am capable (though not necessarily very consistently or frequently). To that end I will endeavour to complete a Paint image for contribution to this thread. Eventually.

I'm always posting new stuff around, but not any epic comics and things that really changes the forum for some time. That becomes the "sensation of the moment". This doesn't happen anymore.
And there's also another problem. This younger folks that are not that experient in arts, also are not experient in commenting the art. So the comments are not good and the artist gets a really down for continuing that...

But anyway... I'll keep doing my arts and trying to always inovate untill there's no one left around here, or I just don't have anymore time

Man, you really do like blood don't you? ;)

As for the talk about "the good old days" and so on, I like many others was first drawn to this forum by the hype surrounding Worms3D, which was on a scale that hasn't been replicated since and probably never will. When A Space Odyssey was announced there was, what, a total of about 3 threads made about it before it was released? Back in the W3D days you couldn't finish reading a post before 2 more had been made.

I honestly can't see the forum ever going back to its glory days, but that doesn't mean we can't have fun, right? My art has actually taken a back seat this past year (coincidentally, I recently got my first anniversary gift on the Kingdom of Loathing, could they possibly be related?) and I'm hoping to find the time to get into it again, so I guess I might as well make some effort to enter this competition. Then again, I always say that.

How about we widen the scope of accepted art? Other than Worms, I mean.

That can surely help bring back the vibe of the Fan Art. (Which, of course, wouldn't be called Fan Art anymore)

I can't draw worms, and many, MANY other members lurking the Fan Art can't draw worms. Fact.

But, if we expand, maybe the non-wormy people are talented in other arts, and there's a chance of two artists collaborating in a wormy-nonwormy-ish way! (weird description but i'm having a poster's block :p)

How about we widen the scope of accepted art? Other than Worms, I mean.no one's restricting the art to worms. no one ever has. hell, we've promoted non-worms art. just no one is interested in any of T17's other games as much.

That can surely help bring back the vibe of the Fan Art. (Which, of course, wouldn't be called Fan Art anymore)actually, it wouldn't change anything. if no one's around to draw, then no one will still be around to draw a new subject.

I can't draw worms, and many, MANY other members lurking the Fan Art can't draw worms. Fact.who? who are these MANY? and how on earth can you draw anything if you can't draw worms? worms are literally HALF as complicated as humans. if you can draw a person, you can draw a worm. and if you can't draw a person you can STILL draw a worm.

But, if we expand, maybe the non-wormy people are talented in other arts, and there's a chance of two artists collaborating in a wormy-nonwormy-ish way! (weird description but i'm having a poster's block :p)this makes no sense at all. how can a person collaborate with another person to create something that both is and isn't a worm at the same time? do you even know what you're talking about here, cause I sure don't :p

This thread is now about forum theory, and how nostalgia makes otherwise intelligent people make stupid points about how it was always better back in the day. Also about people who love being idolized and begged to stay.

People of team17, the forum is in crysis, a community based on the interest of drawing worms should never fall apart. The elders shall return at once and teach the little shadowmoons the art of drawing a worm (in different poses) because I don't want to see the day were the quality of wang drawing drops becauase it would make me want to kill myself.

Ehrm, yakuza is actually right here.

This forum is called Fan Art and not Fan Crap.
The problem is that the current people frequenting this forum the most, simply are utter crap compared to the real good artists from years ago, who nowadays hardly visit the forum at all.

People should simply get a more objective point of view on their "art" and realise that most of it isn't really worth posting.
They should use services like DeviantArt to dump their stuff on the web and come back when they've become better, somewhere near the famous artists.

BTW, yakuza has been on the forums and in the Worms community slightly longer than Shadowmoon.

I actually agree AND disagree with you here, mr. bonz.

I think the quality problem is secondary. Bad artists and stupid people are absolutely vital for the forum system as well as talented artists a fine gentlemen as yourself and, for instance, P.P.

If we were all so educated and cult, we wouldn't have any jokes and the forum wouldn't be half as funny as it was back in days.

What we need now is art. Any art. The forum is dying cause no one post anything. If people were trying and posting their stuff, we all would be busy mocking, criticizing and having fun and we wouldn't be having this conversation right now.

Quality IS important, of course, but is achieved on a second instance. And for those who don't believe, i point out Gardy.Loo and even Paul.Power. Both guys that improved a lot at art while being here.

For those who think i'm contradicting myself, i believe that we do need good artists to keep the younglings interested and to instruct and teach them what they know. Without the good artists, the younlings would be lost and confused. Without the younglings, on the other hand, we wouldn't have new good artists and therefore, the cycle would be broken. As it is now.

In my point of view, we need new people... who can or can't draw yet but are interested in learning and/or teaching and, most important of all, having fun.

In my point of view, we need new people... who can or can't draw yet but are interested in learning and/or teaching and, most important of all, having fun.and I agree and disagree with YOU. yes, we need more people trying new art, good or bad. however, we need new people in general before that can happen. for us to get more new people, we need new games. the people who play W:A are the same people who have been doing so for a while. the people who play W:OW aren't really visiting the forums much, and there's not much at all in terms of interest for W:ASO. T17 have no other games people are fans of. we can enjoy the worms series (well, most of us are just here for the community at this point) all we want, but until there's something else to visit here no one else will join. the only reason any of US are still here is because we enjoy the community. this place hasn't got anything else going for it right now, and if someone's looking for a community forum this isn't going to be what they look at.

all we can do is sit and wait for T17 to make new games, and do whatever we can to keep the community entertaining with these monthly competitions or other such competitions for art (and whatever online orgy stuff people want to join in on). which we're already doing. there's really not much else we can do.

I agree with most you say Aku. I just want to add that we have to wait for T17 to make new C games. I might be wrong here, but it seems that the console games attract... well... nobody to the community.

I was drawn here by Worms:Armageddon myself. And i must say i've NEVER played any 3D game of the worm franchise. I really don't understand why won't they make something like the OW for the PC as well.

I don't know if their only interest is money, but it appears to me that it isn't. They seemed to always pick an alternative and less... evil... path towards game development, concepts and marketing. Again... i may be wrong here... it's just my impression.

I wish we could do more to save the community and the Worm culture itself. Can we do more?

I agree with some things and not others.

Basically, yakuza is right in that whether this forum's art is good or bad really has very little impact on actual life and is ultimately insignificant. However, what he failed to point out was that necessity and enjoyment don't always come hand in hand. Personally I derived a lot of pleasure from the forum "back in the glory days" and I derive less from it now. This is mostly due to the artistic contributions made and the conversations which would ensure thereafter.

Of course, part of this is also down to people wanting to be idolised and begged to stay - I think this is a natural extension of the above in that at one point, personally speaking, I felt part of an aristic movement which made a huge difference to the forum and its members. I do still pine for those days when all the artists would bounce off each other and the art would improve (as opposed to presently where artists seem to just slam into each other and bleed) and I would happily beg some of those people to come back because in some respects I idolised them. Yes, I would like those people to think the same of me, ultimately because I want us all to want to be here, drawing, bouncing off each other and being creative.

For me it's not about nostalgia, per sé, it's about missing an element of the forum which kept me coming back.

At one point, I considered modelling worms in 3D, and making comics out of the models with ease (I even managed to learn how to use "bones" by myself)... However, since I was instructed in arquitechture, I never got the chance to learn proper modelling to do something as complex as... a proper hand. I can model objects, and stuff, but not even texture them properly.

Once I manage to learn enough, I'll try it, since it's been an idea I've always wanted to try. I've always wanted to contribute - But I've never had anything worth posting. (aside from that parody comic from ages ago, but you get the point)

http://i393.photobucket.com/albums/pp14/Lushmoss/PaintwormFinal2.jpg

3 hours or so of work. Saving as JPGs? Not a good idea if you want to resume your work and try to use white as a transparent colour. I had made a nice BG and everything on a different file, but having to trace away the 99% white/1% blue stuff wasn't fun and it really needed tweaking. Although, for future reference the effect of the fill on a JPG could have potential.

But there we go, I'll submit the best I have: De Art appelle Pushing Up Daisies.

Anyway, I wish I could contribute here, but I've been pretty much busy coding some heavy Worms related project, and couldn't really get the inspiration to draw stuff. Still haven't forgotten your requests in my thread though.

Update on my entry. In the end, I DID paint around the edges as Vaber suggested. Although I did it in red, to be able to see what I was doing and also to adhere to some sort of subliminal message I'd received. Once the red was filled with white, I properly saved it, and made a background since white by itself didn't look so hot.

On the point of nostalgic glory-days: I haven't been here long, but I can say I agree and disagree with you all. Just because all of the cool kids are doing it. :P

I'd say that double-posting is only a problem when you have a particularly 'prolific' forumite who is happy posting in the same thread every 10 minutes whether there's a response to their last post or not.

Beautifully done, mate. I specially like the way you did the folds on the cape.

Well would you like to have to draw something that detailed in every frame of a comic with a sigworm like that?which is why you don't draw every little detail.
