View Full Version : Obviously, I am Obsessed

OK so I have a bit of a dilemma. The recent rash of of MnP maps has led me to start thinking creatively. And that has, in turn, led to a few more ideas. At this point, I would say I have about 6 new map ideas. All of which I really want to do. My dilemma is that I have pretty limited time to do it. Clogz and I have to sort of squeeze in time here and there to make these maps happen. So, I pose this poll to everyone out there, in order to kind of feel out what people might want to see, and thereby give myself a little creative direction.

The following maps are the ones that have been, or have just begun, to roll around in my head. If you please, vote for which one you would like to see next in the line-up. Keep in mind that probably all of these maps WILL be created. I am just trying to decide the order. I will say that there are two current maps in production: Lothlorien and Pit Of Carkoon. So this poll is going to help me decide on the next one after those.

=== 1. Beaches of Normandy ===

Classic beaches of Normany from WWII. Low hitpoints per worm (probably 50). Allies start in boats and should be able to easily walk ashore. Axis spawns in pill boxes on beach. Weapons will be limited to mostly grenades and machine guns. This scheme should result in a fast-paced game (like deathmatch).

=== 2. Parachuting Worms - either D-Day or Vietnam (or both!) ===

Either French countryside or a section of Vietnam. Allies start in airplanes or helicopters and axis start in strategic points of their choosing on the ground. Weaponry is limited to emulate a realistic feel. Axis will only be able to use one heat-seeker to hit aircraft. Allies will parachute in and attempt to neutralize enemies - low hitpoints to ensure quick, albeit chess-like, match.

=== 3. Forts Style Map - Opposing Dojos ===

Fort style scheme situated in a Japanese garden, with each team spawning in opposing 3-story Dojos. Landscape will be sparse and low-lying between forts. Japanese architecture and fawna such as cherry blossoms and the like.

=== 4. Castle ===

Lone castle on a chunk of an island. Tall towers and an underground crypt. Standard worms schemes may apply. This map may evolve and I welcome ideas.

=== 5. Venice ===

Italian architecture taken from a section of the streets of Venice. Tall twoer in the middle. Very likely to use standard schemes. This map may evolve and I welcome ideas.

=== 6. Alcatraz ===

The famous prison in San Fransisco. Special rules stating that prisoners spawn in cells, guards must spawn outside of the prison. The fight ensues. Low hitpoints ensures fast action and strategic prison breaks.

That is it for now. Along with voting, I would ask that you give me your comments as to what aspects you may enjoy from these scenarios, as well as any new scenarios YOU think might warrant consideration.

Thanks guys.

Alcatraz!
Don't forget to add a makeshift rescue raft made from raincoats as the goal somewhere in the shark ridden bay to get the real feeling of Morris and the Anglin Brother's. (The feeling of drowning which it most likely is according to the FBI.)
:D

Followed by Venice.
Basejumping from St. Mark's Campanile onto the high tide flooded Piazza San Marco anyone?
And lots of pooping pigeons on the way down. :/

This kind of pooping pigeons? Also I like the castle idea. Medivial weapons are kinda limited though... I'm sure you'll think of something. Mabye it could be based on the castle from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade?

Nice shot Rob. I am not exactly shocked that Alcatraz is in first place atm. That one goes WAY back for us and it truly deserves to be reborn. Anyone have any other ideas (not on this list)?

I've thought about a WWII concept map once, my plan was to replace nazi symbols with a self-designed symbol. I don't think you'll offend any1 as long as you dont spread nazi symbolism across your map.

hundreds
30 Jan 2009, 15:22
I will say this regarding nazis. It was history. Cruel, sure, but not the first time something like that happened. But yes, the "axis" flags would most likely be represented with the German flag, as it is in many a video game. After all, it was germany UNDER a nazi regime.

In fact, I have already laid out ideas for Normandy so far and kinda decided to use german and american or canadian and british flags in the scenario (on paper).

I through around the idea of a forts style castle map... but then I would have to draw two castles (whine). Oh and the dirt!!! I am working on the subterranean portions of tatooine right now and it is driving me nuts.

Run, I like that castle map. Very nicely drawn. I remember seeing it while browsing the wmdb.

31 Jan 2009, 13:57
You wouldn't need to draw 2 castles, you usually mirror the one half of the map so both sides have the same ground. ;)

hundreds
31 Jan 2009, 16:28
Yeahhh.. see I am kind of totally against mirroring anything. It would mean that half the level has been drawn in love and blood and the other half was cheated on. Not that it is a bad technique, as it is used often and successfully. However, I think I would do better to actually design two castles and within the design itself create similar and fair playing grounds.

Methods...

Well, I am not sure if this is what you mean but: I use Fireworks CS4 (wish it was still owned by Macromedia). Clogz uses Illustrator. Everything in the entire levels is made up of shapes and vectors. From a glass of Champagne to a spoke on the wheel of a covered wagon, it is all points and lines and fills. So, standard vector art but since everything is "worm" size, you don't have to be super detailed. Many times we draw something larger than we need it to ensure that atleast some good detail is there. If we are unsure of what furniture, architecture, plant life, etc, that we need, we research it. Many of my resource folders are packed with location photos, schematics, texture samples, etc. I also make a practice of finding an image of what I need and then either tracing it point by point into vector art if it is in the position I want, or simply eye-balling it and redrawing it by hand.

Lots of work, lots of fun.

:)

Or perhaps I am a bit more... obsessed. Actually Cyr42 (helped in Global Warming) uses Flash for standard drawing as well. I wanted to also point out that if the end product does not play well (ledges that are too high for back flips, gaps that can't be jumped cleanly, ugly pixels, and walls that are a bit too thick where I want them accessible via shotgun)) we come back in and make adjustments to those. Without that kind of playtesting, it's just a pretty picture.

OK, so it looks like Alcatraz is currently in the lead, which is just great because we are both really excited about that one. Since Dojos and Castle are tied for second, I am kind of leaning toward Dojos since it will give me that cultural diversity I have been itching to do.

After that, I may forgoe the Castle one for the Beaches of Normandy, mainly because it will be an EASY level to create and I think after Alcatraz and Dojos, I will be wanting a break.

Of course, if anyone can think of a reason I might be inspired to tackle the Castle one first, then by all means, voice that reason here.

I am still struggling with Pit of Carkoon. I have taken a break from the sand and have moved on to working on the interior of the Sail Barge. All of the exteriors are DONE and I think they look quite acceptable. The problem is, I am having a VERY hard time deciding what to put INSIDE the Barge. There is such few shots of the interior (from the movie) and even in those shots, the Barge itself is lacking in the "furniture" department. If anyone has any suggestions or resources that might help out, feel free to post them here.

Well, you are the artist and have some degree of artistic freedom. Just add what you think would most likely fit.

Remember also that not all areas of the barge are visible in the movie.
That means, you could easily add interior equipment, furniture and apparatus that can be found in Jabba's palace and even other locations found on Tattooine and other Star Wars locations.

Think of the "IKEA of the Outer Rim" that mass produces furniture and equipment that a lot of people buy. :D

I think I will be opting for colored spot lighting in the bar area. It won't be a disco ball sincee a disco ball only really looks good in motion (ahh the dream of animated pngs...) and the same goes for anything living... (other than the sarlacc of course). But I might be able to put a Vader toy somewhere. ;)

Also, don't forget to make some Boba Fett reference. Perhaps somewhere at the bottom of the Sarlacc.
Like they did in Duke3D in one of the sandy levels with the "Boba Fett was here" caption on one of the cave walls. :)

hundreds
4 Feb 2009, 17:11
Yeah I remember someone requesting that (probably you) and there will definately be a reference to him. Either I will be putting worm bones with a Fett helmet OR I might even have a small enclosed cave down near the bottom where Fett survived for years on the entrails of the Sarlacc that could not beat him!!!

Ehrm, Leia strangled Jabba with her chain and the used the laser cannon to scuttle the barge.
I suppose that in your map the barge is still intact, so the only thing you could add is the dead, strangled Jabba and lots of dead guards. :)

Also, Boba Fett apparently survives the Sarlacc according to official canon (even a second time).

The above comment is why making a Star Wars level is so difficult. There are just so many rights and wrongs. :)

Well, Leia (or what remains of here) is currently laying at the base of a vertical pole on a small dancing stage in front of Jabba's throne. I know it would make more sense to do a dead Jabba (and I might pass it by Clogz to see what he thinks) but the bony remains of the slave girl look pretty good.

I can't wait till I release this and get all the Star Wars crazy's to come out and tell me why everything is SO wrong. Especially on wmdb. heheh!

I like the idea of an 'alternate reality' Star Wars in which things are a bit different... it reminds me of this:

Vader I am glad you made that comment.

I really don't want to have to make a dead Jabba because it skirts very close to breaking one of the cardinal rules of MnP:

No objects that should be MOVING will appear in an MnP map.

This is why you don't see any living creatures, including any piece of crap Garfields, or running water, or blinking lights.

I know. The Sarlacc pit totally breaks the law. But it is the point of the map to begin with and in the original version of ROTJ it barely moved at all!!! So it slides... And I know a dead Jabba ain't moving. But I would need to design one that looked wormy enough that it would no longer be Jabba. And I believe it may be a bit distracting. I could simply solve all this with a readme that says something along the lines of:

"Jabba made Leia dance herself to death, and her flesh rotted off incredibly fast. Also the Sail Barge did not blow up but instead just stayed where it was, waiting for the next battle, this time with a bunch of worms."

Lucas is rolling in his grave.

Lucas is rolling in his grave.
Now are we talking about alternate reality, in reality? Because in a reality with no George Lucas, that means no chance of the last three movies (those being the orginaly planned episodes 7,8,9) being made (hopefully they are not made in this reality, an eighty year old Han Solo really can't do much). I know the prequels weren't the best, but in no way were they as bad as some people made them out to be.

hundreds

That is NOT a bad idea. I kind of like the idea of a Sail Barge frozen in time, or revisited a year or so down the road. Fett finally dies of boredom in a cave near the sarlacc's stomach. Leia is bones and a bikini. R2 is a bucket of bolts and spilled drinks... not bad at all.

Well, I got over my slightly extended artist block. The Sail Barge is now 75% complete. I was able to use a little artistic freedom (as supported and suggested) and created a chic night club in the bottom level of the barge (as well as a loft). The lighting is smooth, and the chairs are pleather. I can't wait to see what you guys think of it!

Vader
12 Feb 2009, 13:34
I'm looking forward to this, as you already know. The night club bit sounds like a nice parody of LEGO Star Wars, so you don't need much artistic freedom for that.

Nah, if Leia has already rotten to skeleton, I doubt that a stormtrooper would last longer.
(Although, a corpse would hardly rot anyway in the arid climate on Tattoine, but rather mummify.)

How about an upside down stormtrooper helmet with with a drinking straw and a little umbrella in it? :)

hundreds
12 Feb 2009, 17:58
Ohhhh... Vader, I think bonz is on the right track with this one. However I pose to you this fact of Star Wars geekiness!

There were no stormtroopers on the luxury liner during the battle at Carkoon.

BUT, A HEAD, with A STRAW coming out of it will be happening. Consider this: It was recently suggested that I place 3PO's legs sticking out of the sand, since the heroes evidently never made it over to pick him up. However, staying with our little alternate reality, the only reason 3PO would be in the sand, is if he was knocked off by R2 just before the barge exploded! Thus, through my cunning attention to detail in the most nerdiest of ways, I have decided that the C3PO leg paradox can not fly.

I pose this alternative: I have already placed a dead, drunken R2D2 on the dance floor, laying on his side. Since he never made it to the heroes, then Luke, Han, and Chewie are quite dead, in the pit. In fact, Jabba actually had Han thrown in STILL in carbonite. Makes for a very interesting possible escape from death if a worm lands on his carbonite self instead of into the Sarlacc's stomach. Lando is also dead, because honestly, who was fooled by that crappy disguise anyway? As for 3PO, he was promptly dismembered, and most of his parts lay in a sack in the back of the sail barge in what I like to call, "The Jack Bauer vs Tortured Robots" room. Yes I am stealing it straight out of Jabba's palace since that level wil never be rereleased in Next Gen style. 3PO's head, however, shall remain squarely placed on a club table, with a straw and an umbrella sticking out of it. Thank you for helping me logically arrive at what I wanted to do with him in the first place.

For those of you who may be interested, I only have two more rooms to do in the barge, one of which was the Robot Torture room already mentioned, and the other will be a standard armory where Jabba's boys arm themselves.

I can't tell you how well this map plays. I have been "testing" it, a bit too much since it pulls me away from designing it as well as working on the logo for FOW that I promised I would get started on. The testing really has me convinced that this will be, hopefully, a fan favorite. Not that I don't love our other levels, but this one really feels right to me. The death by Sarlacc happens so often, even when the ground is pock-marked with grendade holes and covered in explosive cans.

You guys are going to love it.

EDIT: Don't know if you guys noticed, but there is a very VERY small thumbnail of the sail barge on our website. Kinda a little sneak preview, if you will.

Well, you could still add a stormtrooper helmet as a drinking jar.
Maybe Jabba wanted the bar on his sail barge to have a collection of various trophies (helmets, robot heads, animal horns,...) as drinking containers. :)

Speaking about trophies previously:
You could add lots of (distinctive) things from the Star Wars universe on the walls for decoration.
E.g. helmets, animal heads, weapons,...

Even framed pictures of famous persons could do.
E.g. the Mos Eisley cantina band, Leia in leather lingerie,...

hundreds
13 Feb 2009, 18:36
You know, it is funny... if you look up info on the Sail Barge, one thing you WILL find is that Jabba did in fact keep "gargoyles" of certain animals hanging on the walls as decor. The rancor was one of them. He also had a relief style "painting" of himself and all his croanies on the wall.

The trouble with both of those items is this, I am actually pretty much out of room in the main area of the ship. So the mounted heads would only get in the way of those precious areas that are currently reserved for worms to walk about, and kill stuff, in. The painting and painting-like items, such as suggested, almost never works in a worms level (at least in an MnP level) because there are no background walls. See this link: http://feedback.worms2d.info/pages/general/suggestions/77329-support-for-multi-layered-png (and support it please!)

Only in weird circumstances, such as the clown painting on the wall in the Hammond Hotel and a few other instances where the background was intentionally put in even though a worm obviously cannot walk there, will such things work. With my limited space on the Barge... I just don't see including that sort of thing. I have to kind of balance the good looks with the playability - and in most cases playability MUST be the winner in a tie. Who wants to play a level that is pretty but not fun? I think that is somewhere in the MnP list of Dos and Don'ts.

I do, however, have a nice large "LCD" TV mounted on one of the walls with some nice swirling colors on it to accompany that feel-good atmosphere that comes from drinking too many Pan-Galactic Gargle Blasters.

Also, sadly, I tried the 3PO out as a drinking mug. It was really hard to tell that it was he, and the straw and umbrella looked like... well... not like a straw and umbrella (to fit the scale, it has to be pretty small). So, instead, 3PO's head, along with the rest of his body, is now quite messily laying in a pile in the Droid Torture room. I also have constructed both "bad" droids, that one driod with no legs and the sad face, and am working on the Gonk as we speak.

I really wanted to find a way to include a Jawa, but I feel like that may be more appropriate laying on the ground dead in front of a Sand Crawler. Whoa, did I just add another level to the list?????

A sheep race map is possible. I am just so used to playing standard game types - never even played CTF still.

The list is long (see the poll on this thread), but I havn't lost interest yet so anything is possible. Can you imagine doing the entire Dreadnaught? Holy crap. Sand crawler would probably be more at an easy grasp. I would almost think of making it Sand Crawler vs Sand Crawler, fort style.

But keep those ideas coming! I hope to make a few final adjustments to the Droid room this week and if the stars are aligned correctly, I will have that armory completed too. They are such small rooms, it shouldn't take long.

The sand though... ugh... it is coming soon. I know it is coming, and boy am I not looking forward to it. Meanwhile, enjoy these "work in progress" shots.

OK. The Barge and both skiffs are COMPLETELY DONE!

I am now doing the sand. It is a LOT of sand. I have attached a scaled down screenshot of the gist of what I am doing here. If anyone has any good ideas of what method I might use to represent layers of underground in vector format that looks convincing and artistic, feel free to blurt it out now.

I am having Cyr42 over tonight and I think he may be able to give me some pointers. He was the guy who did the tree roots taking hold of the Whirlpool Organics building in Global Warming.

Thanks man! Wait till you see the rest of it. And these downsampled forum screenshots really don't do it justice. Of course, the 64 color limitations don't do it very much either, but whatever... Actually, along those lines, I wanted to say that with this map I have REALLY been fine tuning the pallette. I have manually added at least 10 colors and the results are very satisfatory. I may consider revisiting the pallette on Global Warming, but I still think that the quantity of DIFFERENT colors used in that map make it a tough job.

As regards the sand that you attached - that is actually one of the things that we are doing for the top layer of sand. The bottom layer (thanks to Cyr42), consists mainly of a rock and rock sediment layer.

I think next week is a fair ETA for this map.

Whooo!!

Or how about some allusions to Arrakis (a.k.a. Dune)?
Dead sandworm? Dead Freemen warrior? Thumper?

Dead sandworm?
A sandworm is big enough to BE the level, let alone fit in a small part of it!

You could have a portion of it, faintly integrated with the sand.

Well, it looks like we are nearing the end of this road. I might, depending on testing and final changes, be releasing this on Friday EST (US time).

As far as "Easter Eggs", I did place the partial remains of a Krayt Dragon in a portion of the sand near where the Sarlacc nested. There are plenty of other items in the barge and in the pit - passed out R2D2, a pile of C3PO, a Han Solo (still in Carbonite) in the pit. I will be putting the remains of Fett in the sand as well. And as a request from my buddy Cyr42, the all important towel will be added somewhere in the barge. If you know what that means, give me a shout out! Heeeyyyaaa!

The sand is looking so stinking tasty right now I feel like puking. Gotta work on some stones some more. More updates later.

Baby sandworm? They surely aren't born that big.

Don't panic!

Yaaahhhhh baby! I am actually rereading Life, The Universe, and Everything at the moment. Love it.

Update: Two more things to add in - adjustments to the sail connectors, and that towel, still. And anything that comes up while play-testing.

How much have you playtested the map yet?
Make sure there are enough possibilities to slow down the worms descent into the Sarlacc's beak.
If they fall straight down to bottom, the map may be less fun for players that have bad positioning and/or bad luck.

In my experience of Sheep BnG, the best things to have on slopes are mines. Sure, they may aid one or two deaths but they also create big holes in the slope which most often save a sliding worm from certain doom.

Never fear my friends!!

Mines serve just that purpose (as well as cans). Additionally, there are a few "obstacles" in the pit itself. ;)

Trust me when I say that most worms will die in the pit, but being on the slopes is not an immediate death sentence. This level plays VERY well in the ships above and has a great relationship between them and the pit itself.

the ships above

For me, the map just got massively awesomer.

I want to release this so bad - RIGHT NOW.

But I think I might need one more testing to ensure that the scheme works good with it. It is such a small point... but I want it to be perfect.

EDIT: I couldn't help it. They made me do it.

How could "they"! Forcing poor hundreds to release his map two days earlier than he said! jk :)

Thanks brutha.

Isn't it funny how you always just assume there are only guys on this site?
