Please feel free to beat me with the ugly stick if this is one of the more annoying questions.

I have been looking at some of the feature requests on that nice little voting system. One that REALLY stuck out in my mind was that multi-layerd PNG possibility. I continued reading on and I found a comment made by CyberShadow (wish I could remember exactly which post it was on) that alluded to the fact that there may be changes to the pallette-limited way that W:A displays colors. I think that comment implied a 4.x release possibility.

My annoying question is this: Is that actually planned (changing the color limitation system) and if so, are we looking at a pretty decent long time till that happens (that's the annoying part)?

My bread and butter of W:A is level design. I will be releasing our levels in a week or so, and you will see why I say that. To have more colors, without sacrificing the little wind particles and background gradient would be nice. But to have full color AS WELL as backgrounds and foregrounds in the PNG would be a dream come true.

I support you for this question !
WA will have 10 years in 2009, the possibilities added by the beta are very nice for level editing, towers, big rope race with colored sprites are like next gen map, but limited to 113 colors.. Even dithering can t fool the eye so perfectly, you still have some glitch colors..

I think that it must be hard to do, maybe opening the sources would make less work for you, but it s the nicest solution if the work would be hard and long lol

Maybe your already working on that, but i'm sure you can understand the level editors and gamers enthousiasm for this feature, so don't blame us begging, cause after the size limitation, full colors would be the 2nd big improvement since the birth of WA ;)

And multi-layered PNGS would be step 3. ;)

Switching to 32-bit colour, as well as some of the other major requested features, require a major rewrite of many parts of the code. We're delaying these rewrites for now, and instead concentrating on adding smaller features that fit better with the current code base. We have assigned this major rewrite, which would allow us to implement most requested features (including 24-bit colour) the version number 4.0 - but it's still in the future, as there are many great things we can add in 3.x.
