There are serious problems in WWP and WA when running on Vista: parallax gfx has wrong colors. Useless to run it in compatible mode.
It's a technical bug for sure and not a peculiar HW/driver issue as many others reported the same problem here http://forum.team17.co.uk/forumdisplay.php?f=50

Please, can you provide a fix for these great Worms classic?

the issue IS software related and in 99% of cases, it is caused by a background process/service such as Indexing Services and other things that steal the games palette.

If the problem is really palette stealing (256 colors/16M?), well... it's WA/WWP that should do as every other program do: use dynamically allocated palette. Not static and hence "stolen"...

unless you know how to code and wish to implement the change yourself, don't complain, because what you ask requires a lot of the game to be rewritten.

v4.0 of W:A which will probably be out in 5 or so years, maybe less, will have a brand new rendering engine and most likely lets you play the game with your WWP CD. (you retain access to WWP specific missions and features)

Yep, that's what I fear.... would need a switch from DirectDraw->modern DirectX in the code of the game as far as I can understand...

In your case, it is most likely a program with an "always on top" feature interfering with it. Close all open programs (virus scanners, instant messengers such as MSN, and firewalls are common culprits). Then, once you know which program it is, search for a steal focus, always on top, bring to focus etc option in it and disable that.
