View Full Version : Avatar fads?

Just wondering, when was the last avatar fad? Someone mrbunsy said in this post (http://forum.team17.co.uk/showpost.php?p=669306&postcount=69) in the welcome 2008 invitees thread that it was about time to start a new one...

I have absolutely no ideas, and no artistic talent :p. Can anyone think of anything?

If we're not up to an avatar fad, we could perhaps do a location fad, having "od" somewhere subtly in your location like I did...

I'm allways up for an avatar fad. Those allways annoy several people outside od.

Perhaps use a cryptic phrase and split it into words, assign a different word to each one of us and see if anyone out there puts it togheter. :p

Yeah, that would be awesome. Maybe make it spell "OD IS FOR REAL" or something.

Or maybe each of us uses an avatar of a different Assanit or whatever it's called from Plasma's freak spore collection of very similar creatures?
Seriously how many did he make? I remember a shot with a lot of them on his sporepedia or something and they all looked the same to me...

How about, in the spirit of the everchanging but often geeky 100%OT thread title*, we each pick a number dear to us and do something like this with it?

http://i35.tinypic.com/1yl276.png

1. It'd be moderately annoying but extremely confusing, especially if we all stuck to exactly the same format [99 × 99 pixels, black background, white border/text] and only changed the numbers. Though I guess exceptions in a larger font [I'm thinking formulae] would also be fair game.

2. It allows for quite a bit of individuality within the otherwise strict format, since not all numbers have to be throw-bricks-at-me nerdy. In case that isn't your thing.

3. They'd obviously be easy to create and not at all a strain on the server with this few colours, unlike the last fad's. Cough. The problem is, we'd all probably want to use the same font and I did the numbers in mine** by hand, so someone would either have to create the font or point me to simple software capable of it.

* Is there some sort of a record being kept about what titles the thread's had in the past? It should be.

** Nobody's taking phi from me in case this goes through!

Aww, I would have gone for 42.

I guess 1729 will do though ("Ramanujan's Number", the smallest number that's the sum of two cubes in two different ways. 10³ + 9³ = 1000 + 729 = 1729 = 1728 + 1 = 12³ + 1³)

Should we schedule a time so we can all change at roughly the same time? I'd recommend some time next Sunday, as more people are around at the weekend (and we need to give more people a chance to make them).

I'll be around most of the day British Summer Time (or do the clocks change before then, I can never remember...)

Mwahaahah, it's catching on... but you aren't meant to just squeeze your numbers in the middle of my phi and single them out. The little red 42 was merely an extra touch, heh. There's plenty of time until next weekend, so do it right!

Here's pi with a Vaderian touch, but without the decimal point since I figured we wouldn't want to make it too obvious the numbers aren't random:

http://i37.tinypic.com/1zvbb77.png

Oh and I guess we could each use a different third colour for pointing cool coincidences in irrational numbers out. I think I'll make my 42 blue and/or green:

http://i34.tinypic.com/1zbrr7b.png

I'll most likely have little time during the week, but if anyone can't be bothered doing theirs alone, I should be able to get a couple more done on request.

If you think anyone will take more than a slight bit of interest outside of OD you're getting your hopes too high, IMO. If you want people to take an interest you need to make it something that creates a buzz. Right now, anyone looking at these new avs will think "Oh, maybe a bunch of people decided to put numbers in their avs, but I don't know what it means or why they are all different, and TBH it doesn't look like something I'd be interested in, and there isn't much room for me to be creative, so I think I'll leave it."

Spadge + hats + the idea of Cheech would create that buzz. That's why I suggested it. But all the cool numbers are taken and if I'm honest I only know about '42' and Pi anyway. Oh, and '69'. I'll bet most forumites here don't have the required knowledge to recognise anything else significant. Surely I'm being positive by recommending a better use of your time? When will the next fad be? Will it create the desired effect or will you have to wait until people have forgotten about them? Will you look back and consider the numbers campaign a satisfactory fad? Is this truly to cause confusion amongst the outsiders or just something to pass the time with?

thomasp
7 Oct 2008, 22:31
speaking of "cool" numbers, how come nobody's come up with putting the number one thousand three hundred and thirty seven in an avatar?

thomasp

A little Cheech mocking actually does sound good.
Although that may then have repercussions, like another porno-spam attack with users who cunningly post sensibly until they're out of premoderation, then spam the hell out of the forum. And Cheech may launch an anti-OD attack, again.

Akuryou13
7 Oct 2008, 23:44
honestly, if he's so childish as to spam over something like an avatar mocking then he really has failed his purpose.

It was just another day in the city. People wandering around attending to their daily business. But then, looking out the window of the throne room, the butler started to notice something peculiar.

"Erm, your majesty," he said tentatively, "You might want to see this."

The king waved his hand in disinterest. "Meh. Maybe later."

"I mean, you REALLY might want to see this."

The king threw up his hands in exasperation. "Fine! I'll come look out your dumb window!" He got up and walked towards said window and looked out at the city below.

"Well?" he said.

"Well, what are you going to do?"

The king narrowed his eyes. "Do about what? Everything seems to be in order."

The butler sighed and pointed at an obtrusive object in the city center.

"What is it?"

"It appears to be a large WAGON, sir."

"...I take it that's not normal then?"

"Everyone in the area is jumping aboard it sir!"

He narrowed his eyes again and wrinkled his nose. "Cannot imagine why. That looks like the most poorly built wagon I have ever seen."

"So what are you going to do about it?"

The king raised his eyebrows. "Do? What do you mean do?"

"It's disrupting everything and confusing people! They're just wasting their time riding a stupid wagon for no reason! You said it yourself, it's not even a NICE wagon! You cannot intend to just let them keep doing it can you?"

The king walked back to his throne and sat down, giving out a sigh of relief. "It's just a little harmless fun. You have to let the plebes indulge their plebeian interests now and then. Otherwise they grow...restless."

"But if you let them do it once they will do it again!"

"Yes, yes they will. But they will have learned from their mistakes."

"Meaning...?"

"Meaning next time, they will give their wagon WHEELS."

Of course if you use a different posts-per-page to me then it will be on the wrong page but the images start from post 283 onwards.

And say which one you're taking so we don't have lots of duplicates.

Anyway as I had the pineapple last time, I'm using the kiwi instead.

I will lynch "whatever the spikey thing is." (A werewolf no doubt)
I will sip tea with the banana.
I will pretend the pomegranate does not exist.
I will consume the deliciously sexy melon.
I will curse the strawberry for making me hungry. (Ironic since I do not like strawberries)
I will be vaguely indifferent to the cherries.
I will glare at the kiwi fruit for being a kiwi fruit.
I will be royally confused by the plum who should not be allowed to change their avatar.
I will get a little too personal with the sheep.
