So i'm driving TheKomodo and his brother around the Yorkshire moors, showing them some of the beauty spots. We hit a downhill bit on a corner, i put the brakes on a bit, and the back end sneaks out to the side. I try to correct it with opposite steer, which throws the back end out the other way, and the car straight off the side of the road up a grass banking. The car, now travelling sideways, hits a fence post which flips it over onto the roof, and 30 yards later it comes to a stop jacknifed in the middle of the road, upside down.

I shout for everyone to get out of the car, which means me climbing out the passenger side (where TheKomodo was) because my side is too crushed. Once outside, both myself and TheKomodo were bleeding pretty badly, his brother was strangely (and thankfully) fine. We gained a traffic queue of people who came to help us, but we were in the middle of nowhere so someone had to drive off to the nearest village to get mobile reception to call 999.

By the time the ambulance arrives, i'm almost unconscious and can't see, bleeding from the head, sat at the side of the road with various contents of peoples' cars wrapped around me. TheKomodo is bleeding from his arm, but still fully conscious and walking about.

Long story short, i've got a pretty gruesome head wound and my balance is ****ed, TheKomodo has his arm bandaged up after having half my sunroof removed from it, and TheKomodo's brother has scuffed his shoe. A bit.

Wow, you lot really are lucky to survive. Guess it's a credit to modern cars with alll their safety features like seat belts, etc

Ouch! Flat...

At first look I wondered why you were hurt more than the passenger when I realised that the driver sits on the right side in the UK...

Bah, that's all terrible, also having had others in the car with you. In a way it's good the Komodo brothers got off easier than you did, I guess, you just need to recover completely now so I can start breathing again.

I hope you can get yourself to drive again soon, I'm not sure I could after a close call like that. On the bright side, though, having this experience present in your subconscious mind at all times from now on will likely make you too cautious on the road, which isn't all bad.

Heh, took me a second to turn things around after seeing that photo as well.

Holy smouldering damn, man... Hope you recover quickly. Your openness with it seems to suggest that you weren't traumatized too badly, at least. :p

I think my openness with it suggests that i wasn't driving dangerously, and until i find out exactly why my car did that and how to avoid it in the future, i'm not sitting in a drivers seat.

That happened at 45mph, the speed limit was 60. I think the only reason we all survived is because i was only doing 45.

How about taking a technical driving lesson at an automobile club?
You know, those trainings where you learn to cope with dangerous situations.

Wow, I'm glad you're okay!

and until i find out exactly why my car did that and how to avoid it in the future, i'm not sitting in a drivers seat.

I'm not trying to speculate too much or anything, but looking at the picture your rear tire looks pretty flat. That could have happened in the crash, but the rest of that area looks unharmed so that's the first place I'd look for problems. *shrug* just an idea.

If someone on this forum died, would we ever know?:-/ That's pretty weird stuff to think about...

Well a fair share of forum people know each other in person, they'd probably find out.

Two tyres did burst during the crash. I'm not sure which two though, i haven't actually seen the car in person since then.

Here, i've made the whole facebook gallery public. Again, be warned there's blood in some pictures: http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=45208&l=ffc00&id=568645145

Ouch! Glad you all made it out without getting too hurt. My cousin wasn't as lucky. About two years ago he tried to pass a truck transporting logs, but an incomming car on the other lane made him have to speed up make it. But somehow while pulling in infront of the truck he flew off the road and the car was compleately destroyed and he flew out the front window several meters. He paralyzed his left arm but other than that he was fine. I think he's slowly starting to regain some of the functionality of his arm with surgery, and they think he'll recover fully.

Cars are dangerous machines!

Eee, glad you're ok! I'd be guessing the road/tyres/brakes combination just stacked up against you at the wrong moment. It must be an eye-opener to how such a crash can happen at that speed. If you could've seen there was nobody coming the other way, I am curious to know whether you could've fared any better if you let the car slide around the corner and spin out, just concentrating on stopping.

I'd have possibly been better off, but Komo's side didn't have an airbag, and would have been the side hitting the wall.

I've thought a lot about how i could have made the situation better, and the best i can think of would be not to have countersteered the second time, ie steered away from the wall, but then just let it spin out, or possibly even carried on steering the same way to make the spin quicker.

The perfect solution of course would have been to take the corner slower.

Damn, maybe their status in Dwarf Fortress as dangerous killing machines isn't totally unfounded. :p
