View Full Version : Fanartist of the Month May '08

Funny old world. I've done better and more complex drawings than that one, and lost (with the honourable exception of the T17F building), but that one turns out a winner.

Anyway, yes. This month's theme is This Sporting Life. Draw a picture of some Worms playing a real-life sport, putting their wormy skills and weapons to bear in it (you can do other Team17 stuff too if it works within the sports theme). Closing date Thursday 29th May.

As a silly little side competition, the best (in my opinion) drawing that features cricket will be awarded that rare thing, a Paul.Power point (sorry to devalue the currency, Aku, but that's how it goes).

True, but I didn't want to overburden Shadowman's brain as apparently it can't cope with too many advanced facts one after the other.
Actually, I wanna see if it really would.

Did you know that insects don't have lungs? Instead, they get their oxygen through tiny valves in their exoskeleton, from which the air can go through the cells to reach every part of the insect. However, an insect that has been magnified several times its regular side, say, in a Sci-Fi/Horror movie, wouldn't be able to breathe. This is because the spaces between each valve is too great for the oxygen to reach every part of the insect, thus "suffocating it". Another reason that a ginormous insect couldn't live is because it wouldn't be able to support its own weight. If the length, width and depth of the insect, or any animal for that matter, were to be magnified by a certain number, the mass would be equal to the cube of that number while the strength of each muscle would be only equal to the square of that number. This is because unlike mass, muscle strength does not depend on the volume of the muscle, but of the cross-section of it. As a cross-section is two-dimensional, it means that the strength will only be length x width, which would be the square of that number. And ALL that is aside from the fact that magnifying an insect would be physically impossible without biologically re-assembling the insect with several more atoms. And that would require highly advanced technology, and would neither be possible in any era those Sci-Fi movies have it in, and certainly wouldn't be possible by shooting something with a ray. Of course, they're still done anyway because of the Hollywood Effect, which is where the laws of Physics are ignored in movies in favour of entertainment. Other rules of Physics that are all-too-often ignored in movies include that if something in space were to explode, no sound would be heard from the explosion, and the resulting debris wouldn't slow down due to air resistance and thus could easily tear a hole through a space vehicle or station; and that if you were to jump through a pane of glass, you wouldn't survive completely intact, you would instead be ripped to shreds due to broken glass being VERY sharp! I believe Jackie Chan did this one, and quickly regretted it. However, he did that because he doesn't like using tricks or stunt doubles in his movies, and prefers if all his stunts were done in real life. He has done many real-life stunts in this way, including hanging from a ladder attached to a helicopter several miles above a city, hanging onto the back of a moving bus where his shoes were scraping along the road and sliding down a 45-degree building for 21-stories. His most dangerous stunt ended up with him getting electrocuted, a dislocated pelvis, and the skin burned off his hands. The most surprising thing about that is that the stunt was a success.

So yeah. Paul's probably not the Top Rambler anymore.

It's like when everyone says that ants are the strongest animals because they can carry 50 times their own bodyweight. It's true, but they can only do it because they're very small. An ant the size of a human wouldn't be able to carry its own bodyweight, let alone 50 times it.

I also think I captured Brendon McCullum, the New Zealand wicketkeeper, fairly well - even if the thumbs on his gloves are the wrong way round.

But S2K described it as "awesome" and Bloopy as "amusing" (mind you, he's a cricket fan from NZ so hey), so I think I'm in credit here.

Although it looks like you ripped the fields off a picture, but maybe thats just me.that's because I DID rip the fields off an actual picture :p I ripped the metal textures off of metal and the flesh textures off of skin as well it's just not as obvious for whatever reason. I made the grass more transparent to try to kill the over-realistic texture but it's still a little too much. unfortunately there's not much I can do about that as I just started using these textures :p eventually I'm sure I'll come up with something.

And what the hell is the worm standing on?a pitcher's mound. it's where the guy who throws the baseball stands in the actual sport.

Although there's a little something about having a pitchers mound in an otherwise featureless plane. There aren't even bases in that picture!shhhhh. if I don't say anything no one will ever notice.

also, I'm fairly confident that jet's entry will win over mine :p either that or angelus will throw in a random crap entry in the last 5 seconds that'll beat out mine :p

Or, huntakilla or splapp will enter and leave your entry and everyone elses in the dust.:p

They are something to watch out for.

Huntakilla and splapp, come here and ruin his chances of winning!:D

Actually, if you haven't gotten a continuous style yet, I'd strongly recommend you use worms based on the types you used in your comic. They're still considerably better than Paul's style!

Sorry, but that's making me a bit skeptical. Most, if not all, good webcomics have their own jokes, because the jokes passed around by word of mouth are usually very simplified.

In that case, particularly as it is not worms fan art, by the mod powers in me the entry in question is hereby disqualified.

Not to mention that it wasn't drawn by him too, having stolen artwork from two places.
Heck, why not just give him a few more infractions just to make sure he doesn't do it again?

Aku finds he easily relates to the "worm" in the picture, for some reason...
