Along with the new mega-TF2 update that adds Gold Rush, 36 new medic achievements and class loadouts, there's also... Free Team Fortress 2 Weekend! (http://www.steampowered.com/goldrush/)

That's right, if you haven't bought TF2 (shame on you) you can play it for free, this (May 2nd-4th) weekend! Get it while it lasts! Or don't. Just don't get it when it doesn't last.

I propose an OD TF2 weekend. Remember, there is a RealVG Steam group which everyone is welcome to join.

Uhh, it's invite only though isn't it?

Melon
30 Apr 2008, 23:55
Can you only play it for free that one weekend? Will I have to buy it afterwards?

If the answer to the latter is yes, then I'll most likely be too busy revising to install Steam and grab TF2. If it's the former, hell yeah free game.

I never bought the orange box since I wasn't really sure it would all run on Crossover, but now I can at least check Team Fortress out.

It'll probably run like ass on my laptop, though...

Just make sure you're on Steam whenever you're online. If everyone does the same, we're more likely to get a spontaneous game.

So I've downloaded Steam and I'm downloading TF2 now. My user ID is The_Masterful_Melon, because Melon and H2Omelon were taken.

I've added everyone from the RealVG group to my friends list.

Is it okay if we just begin the download within the May 2nd-4th, or does the whole thing have to finish downloading before time is up?

Because the fast wi-fi spot near our house is down and all I've got is a slow one.

The game will only be free for another 24 hours. Regardless of whether you've downloaded it or not, once that time is up, you'll have to pay for it.

It thought it would be free forever too. Ah well.

So if you're planning on joining, make sure to preload ahead of time and have fun!

Unsurprisingly, every server is now filled with pyros, which makes for much more hilariously absurd games. It's making me much better at every other class! (http://steamcommunity.com/id/supsuper/stats/TF2)

Fun moments include teams filled with pyros getting backstabbed and quotes like "The pyro is a spy!".

Eventually I decided that the only thing I'm half good at is the engineer. You can I've played as an engineer more than I should've because I just misspelled "thing" as "sentry" in this post.

Well, you can't run any of the games unless you're logged in. But you can set steam into 'offline mode' indefinitely where it won't try to contact Valve, so doesn't need the internet, but the multiplayer parts of most games won't work.

SupSuper
22 Jun 2008, 15:42
The only copy protection is that every game is deeply connected to Steam, which takes care of checking online if everything's legal (so you need to connect it at least once), so as long as you can run that, you should be fine.

If you get a retail copy it's the same deal, only you get a serial to "legalize" your game on Steam.

Yup, I've got my steam account permanently offline on another computer so my sister can play Portal, and I can just log into either my laptop or desktop or mate's PC to play on any of them.

I used to dislike steam a lot, but now the offline mode actually works, I've grown to love it. Also being able to instantly find the server your mates are in is very handy.

SupSuper
22 Jun 2008, 17:54
Yeah you can play your games on any computer with Steam logged into your account.

I like Steam's features, I just hate its stability. At the drop of a hat it'll mess up game updates or crash Source games or make them go all funky.

Oh hey, finally a map that isn't a desert or industrial environment. Much as I love TF2, it's a slightly sad irony that the anti-realistic FPS still has a lot of brown and grey maps (very cartoony browns and greys, but still browns and greys)

It's also part of a new concept and set of maps: http://steamgames.com/tf2/heavy/arena.htm

The latest TF2 update has been incredibly buggy, I've been getting a lot of crashes and buggy loadings whenever playing on the new maps. It also hasn't helped that Steam has been incredibly disconnecty. Hopefully it'll all be sorted later tonight.

They've been releasing bugfixes, but I still warn people to be on their toes. The new stuff is great fun though, specially the sandviches. OM NOM NOM

We've also got guest passes now, which we're free to hand out to... anyone who doesn't have the game. :p They're like a portable Free Weekend. If you can't play then, they let you play at any other time. (for three days)

Oh and there's also been discussions going on about trying to get a Team17 Server (nothing extravagant, it's just a lot of servers have **** maploads or players) or at least try and gather up enough people to have one big team-up. It's TF2, let's make the most fun out of it!

I thought I did pretty well by my standards. Sure I racked up more deaths than kills, but take out all the random sniper deaths and it seemed that most of the times I got into flamethrower range I got a lot of kills. I even managed to kill someone in the water by backpedalling so that the end of my flamethrower was above the surface (turns out that flames will travel through water in TF2, they just can't be formed underwater).

I think another part of it was that I started slowly, did pretty well in the middle, and then tailed off towards the end when the Heavy Epidemic started.

It was a fun evening. Dan was trying out for a clan, the same one Splapp had just joined, and Matty and I decided to come along for the ride. And... well, not only did we all work nicely as a team, I even played well (by my standards). For example, when I first entered the server, it was Badwater Basin and I joined a BLU team that, for whatever reason, hadn't reached the first checkpoint yet and was rapidly running out of time. So I started pushing the cart, and people joined me. We kept on pushing the cart when overtime began, and eventually we reached the first checkpoint, buying ourselves a few more minutes. Then we pushed on to the second check point. And then I died. But we eventually went on to win that round.

Don't forget to mention that you weren't getting near the last point with the cart while I was playing against you, and only when my internet went down must you have had a chance, because I came back to see our base destroyed ;)

Also the first two games of 2fort were lost because we had a PoE ****** on our team named Edgar Allen ****ing about, and everyone was interested in attacking the enemy with only me on defense as an Engie, trying to erect a sentry in our intel room while staving off enemy Scouts and other classes. Only when Paul helped me erect and protect my buildings as a Pyro in the third game were we able to establish a defense. That's when we won.

Some lessons were learned, I hope.

(note: before this, I had been on the other team, making sure that their three demomen stayed alive as part of a really good defence. Then I got autoswitched, although thankfully it was after we'd actually won.

Then later on we all decided to have a laugh and do melee only. For a change, I went spy:

I had my finest hour as a spy (9 points in the life) when I managed to dance around and backstab three heavies standing on Dustbowl's final point, and cap it. Helped that it was melee only, of course :p.

And then, this morning, I went on for a bit because I saw Pigbuster on. And ended up on Badlands with only two other guys, a spy on my side and a lone scout for the opposition. At first, I played normally while they larked about, but eventually I joined in the fun. And I ended up picking up OMGWTFBBQ, Show Trial and Communist Mani-Fist-O for my troubles. Funnily enough, the spy was standing on the scout's head when I hit him with a hadouken, and he got sent flying:

But you just described experience!

The unlockable weapons always have some disadvantage. For example, the Medic's Bloodsucker syringe gun will take three points per hit of health from an enemy and add it to the medic's own health, but cannot give the user a critical hit damage bonus. His replacement heal cannon, the Kritzkrieg, will charge up sooner but does not give invulnerability.

These new weapons offer new ways to play, but they also bring new ways to play against opponents who wield them. The only way anyone will learn how to avoid an attack of any kind is by playing the game. Those people who play the game more often should rightly be rewarded for honing their skills and increasing their performance ability. I wish I could run as fast or for as long as an Olympic-grade sprinter but I don't think it's unfair that I'm at a disadvantage seeing as I have never put in any training.

A lot of achievements are achieved naturally during the course of play.
You do not have to obtain all the achievements to obtain all of the unlockable items.
You must make the game challenging and provide more play time in order to suit as much of the userbase as possible.
It's a game. Sometimes it can be fun.

I've got all the pyro stuff and 2 of the scout unlocks and I use none of them. they don't suit my play-style at all. every one of the unlocks just makes a different play style available to their respective classes. if you like that style, good on you, but it's hardly something that gives you an advantage over those without them.

That assumes that these weapons are perfectly balanced. That's never true.

On the experience thing: well yeah. It's the only thing which should mean somebody is better than somebody else. It's natural.
However when FPS games introduce artificial experience points, it gets out of hand, usually when they start unlocking more powerful stuff based on it. This is limited in TF2 with weapon unlockables which are supposed to be balanced.

I'm not saying they are imbalanced (well, I suppose I might be). I'm just saying the idea for having unlockables depending on how long you've been playing or how skilled a player is, is a flawed concept to begin with, no matter how neatly it's pulled off.

both the blutsauger and the ubersaw are pretty much direct upgrades over their normal counterparts. the syringe gun is lame because there's hardly ever any reason to battlemedic directly. usually you're just fighting off enemies until you can rush back to base and find someone else to charge, which makes health bumps a lot more valuable than crit bumps.

as for the bonesaw, it has pretty much zero advantage over the ubersaw; both weapons do the same amount of damage (and the ubersaw charges your health gun), it's just that the ubersaw is a little slower to use

another example: the axtinguisher is way better than the normal axe on the grounds that you probably wouldn't pull it out unless you were finishing off a burning enemy anyway

the new scout weapons are the closest thing to balanced sidegrades that have been provided by valve thus far - actually, i would argue that they are fairly underpowered (particularly bonk energy drink, which is utterly useless). also, the sandman should only prevent you from double-jumping when you're wielding it

Akuryou13

unless you're already wielding the backburner, it's a lot easier to sneak up behind someone, torch them, and finish them off with the axetinguisher than to keep the fire going until they're dead. the axetinguisher is an insta-crit on any enemies who are already on fire

also why would switching weapons get you killed? are you such a scrub that you don't have quick weapon switching turned on?

also why would switching weapons get you killed? are you such a scrub that you don't have quick weapon switching turned on?oh they switch plenty fast enough, but it still takes at least most of a second to switch. plenty of time for them to run out of reach of the axe. in fact, I've never seen anyone who gets hit with the torch who DIDN'T run away. and the axe has such a short reach that if you give them any time at all they'll be out of range and you'll have to switch back.

even among awesome players I almost never see any pyros switching to the axe to finish off a burning enemy. they just keep the flames going. the axe stopped being used pretty much after that first week, except for taunting, which is what most melee weapons are used for in the game. limiting the uses of a melee weapon in a shooter game just doesn't make any sense. especially when you limit said weapon to only being usable after you've already hit the enemy with your primary. the pyro is not a scout. gaining distance is what makes fighting against pyros possible.

I got 8 kills with my sentry last night.. sooo close to the 10 kills achievement.
I found the best place to try to get it, and you really need to keep the sentry at lvl 1 so it's hard for the enemy to spot it.

But a spy will always get it before I reach ten :(
I hate spies.

3 Mar 2009, 17:11
even among awesome players I almost never see any pyros switching to the axe to finish off a burning enemy. they just keep the flames going. the axe stopped being used pretty much after that first week, except for taunting, which is what most melee weapons are used for in the game. limiting the uses of a melee weapon in a shooter game just doesn't make any sense. especially when you limit said weapon to only being usable after you've already hit the enemy with your primary. the pyro is not a scout. gaining distance is what makes fighting against pyros possible.Pfft I'm axtinguished all the time. Both the flamethrower and the axe have ridiculously short ranges (compared to most weapons) so your best bet for a kill is the surprise factor or enemy's speed, which makes the axtinguisher a perfect option for things like Heavies. (because heavies don't die after "2 seconds" of burning)

Do spray's support alpha channels for partial transparancy?Yup. (at least TGA ones do)

Also, Aku, it's not that odd a weapon. At least in TFC, getting stabbed was one of the most common ways of dying when playing a sniper.

Only beaten possibly by getting shot by another sniper, but a weapon that defends against that wouldn't be as fun.

I meant apart from the sniper. The only time you're rewarded for a headshot is when playing as the sniper (it gives you a critical hit). The rest of the time, it gives nothing. You aren't rewarded for launching three rounds from the Revolver into a person's head, or for emptying half your clip from the SMG into their tiny skulls.

Given I generally only bother with the Sniper class at the moment, it's a trivial issue for me. Bit annoying when playing as the Spy though, as I can't help myself.

Paul.Power
20 May 2009, 16:50
Lack of headshots doesn't bother me at all. I can't see most classes benefitting from them that much, given that their primary weapons are generally more about area-of-effect attacks. If shotguns did headshots, then Soldiers, Pyros, Heavies and Engies would all care more about headshots and less about their primary abilities.

Headshots from shotguns is a stupid idea. As far as I can tell, a lot of games disable HS from sh!tguns anyway.
I agree that they wouldn't add much to the game, as the only two it would work with are the Sniper's SMG (which they shouldn't be using much) and the Spy's Revolver (again, which they shouldn't be using much).
It's just something that annoys me when I'm forced to use them and I can't help myself but keep my aim at headheight.

From TF2 blog:

As many of you know, the Meet the Spy video was leaked this weekend. Some of you on the forum have wondered if Valve leaked it on purpose. And until we find the clown who did leak it, the answer to that is yes.

Others of you have started a petition to stop Valve from firing anyone over the leak. Once again, this just goes to show you how valuable customer feedback is to us—we hadn't even thought of doing that, but once you see it there in print, it's a fantastic idea. I've been asking people all morning who was responsible and come up empty. But now that I've started firing people, they can't name names fast enough. So far I've got sixty-seven names in the "suspicious" category, fifteen in "very suspicious", and another forty-three I'd been wanting to fire anyway.

I'll keep you posted as I track down the culprit. Rest assured, though: Until I find the person responsible, I vow that Valve will stop work on all projects.

The update is out (http://www.teamfortress.com/sniper_vs_spy/), as well as another free weekend May 21st-25th! (and 50% discount if you buy it)
Here's the full changelog:

Maps
- Added new map, Pipeline. Pipeline is the first map in a new game mode named payload race, which uses two carts in each map instead of only one like traditional payload maps
- Added new arena map Sawmill
- Added new arena map Nucleus
- Added new community payload map Hoodoo
- Updated Dustbowl to fix not being able to jump into the window in the first building of the second stage

Sniper Changes
- Added new sniper rifle replacement, The Huntsman. Instead of a sniper rifle, you have a bow that allows you to move around faster while firing, and fire more quickly than the sniper rifle. Works better at medium range than the standard rifle
- Added new SMG replacement, Jarate. If thrown on an enemy they will take more damage for short period of time. Also extinguishes flames on yourself or allies
- Added new SMG replacement, The Razorback. Will protect you against a single spy backstab, and stun the spy for a short period of time. Comes with a 15% move speed penalty for the wearer
- Standard sniper rifle now shoots through friendly players
- Added 54 new Sniper voice lines
- Added 35 new Sniper achievements

Spy
- Added new revolver replacement, The Ambassador. First shot is very accurate and will cause a critical hit if it hits an enemy's head. Accuracy is poor for a period after that
- Added new watch replacement, the Dead Ringer. When armed, you will appear in all ways to die to the first damage you take from an enemy. You'll be cloaked for 8 second after taking this damage. Upon de-cloaking you'll make a loud, distinct sound
- Added new watch replacement, the Cloak and Dagger. Your cloak meter is only depleted when you move, so you can stay invisible indefinitely if you're standing still
- Spy name tags now show up properly when disguised as their own team
- Fixed a bug that would cause spectators to see disguise weapons incorrectly
- Fixed a bug where enemy spies disguised as friendly spies would have cigarettes that didn't burn
- Fixed a bug where overhealing disguised spies would show the wrong overhealing amount to the medic
- Made it more obvious on first person view model when your motion cloak is out of juice and you are partially visible
- Also made it more obvious on first person view model when you're bumped while cloaked
- Improved the way your disguise weapon is determined to make it clearer and fix a couple of rare issues
- Spies disguised as enemy spies now get a random mask to help complete the disguise, and their target id will be set appropriately
- Spies disguised as medics now have an Ubercharge: line in their disguise target info
- Spies outward facing "disguise health" now matches their disguise target when they first apply the disguise
- Spies can now pick up health kits for their "disguise health", even when uninjured
- Disguise UI doesn't show up in minimum UI mode (hud_minmode)
- Spies that disguise as a player using an unlockable now show that unlockable in hand
- Spies can now use enemy teleporters
- Added 70 new Spy voice lines
- Added 34 new Spy achievements

Scoreboard changes
- Dominations no longer get wiped when teams switch sides
- Dead players draw slightly darker in scoreboard
- Converted class labels to class icons
- All players now display the total number of people they are dominating

General
- You now find new and old items as you play, instead of through achievements
- Fixed a bug that would cause the scout's ball to regenerate at inappropriate times
- Demomen can now detonate their stickies while taunting
- Flamethrower's air burst now extinguishes fire on friendly targets
- Grenades and rockets deflected by a pyro under the effects of Kritzkrieg will now be criticals
- The Heavy and Sniper now have new custom death animations
- Fixed payload HUD not updating properly if you join in the middle of a match and the cart isn't moving
- Engineer's dispensers now give 20%, 30%, or 40% of player's max_ammo (for each ammo type) on each use, based on the level of the dispenser
- Added -sillygibs commandline parameter which will allow the non-violent gibs to be enabled
- Added a new taunt for the Kritzkrieg, which also heals for 10 points
- Improved the deathcam camera handling used when a player plays a custom death animation
- Added missing chalkboard and serverbrowser images for community maps shipped in previous updates
- Removed "Final" from map names in the serverbrowser quick list

Servers
- Added "sv_allow_voice_from_file" convar, which defaults to 1. When set to 0, it'll prevent clients from using the "voice_inputfromfile" feature to broadcast wav files over voice
- Enabled "sv_allow_wait_command" convar, which defaults to 1. When set to 0, it'll prevent clients from using the "wait" command

So milestones are gone and spies are now much harder to spot. And Alien King can be happy that the Ambassador has headshots. :p

The new system for getting weapons is...not good.

The whole point of the achievements system was to make you work towards it, get to know the ins and outs of the class, and it would make you feel like you earned it. Rewarding you for trying a class you never used to play, that sort of thing.

Having said that, decoupling the achievements from the weapons is not the end of the world. But why on EARTH is it completely random? I cannot think of a single good reason for this method to be implemented. Apparently you can just be SPECTATING and randomly get a weapon! And it gives you doubles of weapons you already have! Argh! I am befuddled!

If they wanted to get rid of goals for getting the weapons, why not just give them to you right off the bat? This is the worst of both worlds. It could theoretically take me months to get any of the new unlocks. I do not mind not having them straight away; I liked the achievements system, and it took me a little while to get the other classes' weapons. But this...blah.

On the plus side, Sawmill is easily the most visually stunning map they have ever made. I have absolutely fallen in love with it. :D I have not played the others enough to get a proper feel of them (I fear my concerns for Nucleus may come to fruition), but Hoodoo looks to be a fairly good map (Always nice to have more Payload, albeit a community map). I cannot comment on the new weapons since I, y'know, have not got any of them. And never will.

EDIT:

Hooooooly...

To be fair, the Spy really needs stuff like that. He is a hard class to be useful as.

Akuryou13
22 May 2009, 10:56
oh holy crap this random unlock nonsense has GOT to be changed....

if they want to take out the achievement grind, just have it randomly unlock items you don't already own for whatever class you're currently playing. or have it be based on something. perhaps we could randomly unlock a new weapon if we dominate someone or become dominated, when we get kills in general, when we unlock achievements or any number of other things that could still be random but much less so. as things are now the best way to achievement grind is just to sit in spectator on a locally hosted server from now until infinity. its retarded as hell. take the unlocks out completely or bring back the system of working towards them.

HooDoo is a cluster-**** built by a mad man with too much sniper experience. it's damn near impossible to pyros to do anything at all, and every other class just runs in through the single alley way and spams. its retarded. perhaps I'll grow to love it later down the line but NOT right now.

I DO love the new dual cart maps, they're very nice. one good thing about this patch.

Xinos
22 May 2009, 11:09

I've just read the changelog and not checked in the game, but it looks like the random item find is an addition to unlocks. How else would you find weapons to pick up if somebody hadn't dropped theirs?because its random. you can in spectator mode watching a game and unlock a weapon you didn't have before.

Still, this is still one of the best TF2 updates ever! They even brought back the Oktoberfest taunt (Kritzreig only, +10 health) and the Spy has a spycrab taunt: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gy1ow8tmcHU :D

Edit: Apparently they plan to let players trade items. It's a nice concept, but still annoying 99% of the time.

I haven't unlocked any of the bonus weapons yet.
Seems this random unlocking will be good for me to some extent. :)

Do the random unlocks stick forever with your account?
Where do you select the unlocks?
Can you switch weapons in-game or do you have to go to that menu and/or log off the server you're playing on?

Hmm... I havn't played it yet or read the update notes, but I'm liking the Headshot bonus for the Ambassador.
Thing is, the cooldown puts me off it as I want a reliable weapon when I need it (ie: the Revolver).

Still, Sniper and Spy update = awesomeness squared.

or you could just press escape and choose there.

Another free weekend, another taunt that my laptop cannot run this game. For shame!

Then again, I think I have an idea, although it's late now here, so I'll try tomorrow.
Nope, still doesn't work.

Ah well. When I finally get a job I'll eventually get a desktop that can run the game. I hope you'll all still be playing in a year's time :p

Item trading. This is why you're finding duplicates.

The trouble is, everyone will end up with multiple blutsaugers and flare guns and sandviches and the like because, as the easiest items to unlock with achievements, they probably already have at least one if they've spent a few hours as medic, pyro and heavy. So trading will be pretty much useless :-/

Item trading?
I hope it allows giving duplicates away without anything in exchange.
Otherwise I couldn't trade much, since I haven't earned a single item yet. :p

I want to leech everything off of my Steam buddies. :D

Yeah, I've already deduced that from the loadout screen.
Battlefield Heroes has hats too. I hope that Valve won't get the idea to come up with micropayment crap like that.

There's not much of a problem, but I dislike such forms of DRM pretty much on principle. Steam hides it behind shrouds of convenience and niceties though, hence it gets away with it.
And I find any game running through Steam tends to be very temperamental.

As long as you don't plan to pirate Steam games and give them to your mates, what's the problem? Never have to bother with CDs or DVDs again! Backups? No problem. Music DRM is a real inconvenience, but Steam games? I think it's far more convenient this way.

Well no, compared to SecuROM it's an angelic program that brings happiness to my computer.
Perhaps I'm just being irrational, but I still don't like Steam. It's like somebody standing over me when I'm playing games through it that has to sit down in my chair and load up that game for me when I want to play it.

The (well, my) problem with Steam is more of a long term thing. What happens when Valve goes bankrupt? It's unlikely at the moment, but one day they might. Then, unless they release some kind of anti-steam patch, you might just lose all your Steam games. Or they sell Steam to EA who screws it over. Granted while Valve are fine, steam is very handy but 20 years down the line things could be different.

I don't think companies go bankrupt just like that, specially one as well-connected and well-sustained as Valve. I imagine an anti-Steam patch isn't that crazy anyways, if they wouldn't make one, some bored cracker would.

My only problem with Steam is it can easily get buggy. Connection issues, corrupted downloads, bizarro loadings, etc. And this of course affects any game connected to it.

Why would Valve ever make an anti-steam patch for their games? If anything they would just stop releasing new titles on Steam.

Well, hosting and maintaining the Steam servers requires money and probably a few people too, which would be sucked away if Valve went bankrupt and got liquidated.

And since a lot of the games available through Steam are tied to Steam's netcode this could well be a problem.
Other companies could release their own patches for their customers who bought through Steam.

30 May 2009, 08:57
I had everything except the Razorback, so bringing milestones in means nothing to me. Definitely a good move anyway though, there are many not as fortunate as myself. It was funny to get all six milestones and weapons in a row after killing someone though.

The Huntsman is indeed awesome, and Sniper is now my most played class because of it. It achieves exactly the goal they stated of bringing the Sniper a bit more into the fray. Not as good against other Snipers of course, but definitely a very good side-grade. And it is just so much FUN! Possibly the best unlock yet if you ask me. Jarate is good too, and also encourages to Sniper to get a bit closer to the front lines. I really cannot imagine ever using the SMG again to be honest, especially when using the bow.

Ooh, and the Cloak and Dagger is awesome as well. Great side-grade, trading mobility for safety and the ability to better wait for the perfect moment to wreak havoc. Definitely suits my camping play style a lot more. (Spy is fast becoming one of my most played classes as well.)

Most of the other stuff is good too, especially the maps. I am very pleased with this update. Now if only I could get a hat...

(On a side-note, today's update has made Arena somewhat annoying. No sitting out is great, but having an odd number of players is bad. (One person sitting out each game is not a problem, and that is only if the number is odd.) Also there is no longer a team scramble if a team wins 3 matches in a row, which is VERY bad. Team scrambles were an integral part of Arena and kept things fresh. Now, the steamrollers will keep steamrolling and the steamrolled will continue to be steamrolled. Plus it leads to stagnation of tactics.)

Woo, milestones! I only found one weapon, the medics blut' gun. I havn't gotten any achievements as sniper or spy yet, but I'll probably wait for them to cool down a bit before going at it. Still plenty to get with the other classes.
