I'd better get this sucker up and running so people can have plenty of time to get things done. I went and read through some old contests to get a feel for what they're like, but that didn't help much. Plus Pigbuster is worse than my grandmother at responding to emails, so no help there. I'm going to have to just do the best I can. Let's get crack-a-lackin'.

The Theme: Old Timey

Personally I like when competitions have a few guidelines. Gives the ol' imagination machine a little kick start.

The Rules:

1) It must be Team 17 fanart

2) It must be set in the 19th Century

3) it must be designed as some form of print media
-book illustration
-advertisement for Dr. Linton Charlesworth's Wonder Serum
-wanted poster
-an illustrative textbook picture
-old timey bathroom graffti
-whatever.

I always get my centuries mixed up so think Charles Dickens, Sherlock Holmes, Thomas Edison and Beethoven.

Best of luck!

I'm fairly sure you've got the right time-frame on that one.

Fun fact: Nintendo was formed in the 19th century.

Which has naturally screwed up my perception of the past. So now, whenever I think '19th Century', I imagine Charles Dickens, Thomas Edison, Mario and Link.

Darn, and I thought Sega had it beat by being formed in Hawaii during WW2.

Oh well.

To be fair it wasn't a video game company until a lot later. All they sold were trading cards. So no one get confused about the tech available in the 1800s.

Obvious Fact: Mario didn't exsist before World War I. EDIT: So you wouldn't here the "Here we go! Let's drop Luigi onto those nasty Russians!" in 1900.

Are you remembering that Mario first appeared in Donkey Kong, under the name of Jumpman? I don't know the exact date of its release, but it's an old game, so I presume it was well before 1900...

Honestly, I didn't know that there was a Japan-Russia war going on in 1900.

The hot dog was invented by the prusians in 1965 BC. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donkey_Kong_%28video_game%29)

off by 81 years :p

Actually, the first "video game" was from 1947. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_game)

Get a grip people, we've only had actual video games for around 30 years or so.

A typo is where you make a typing error. I didn't make a typing error.
That Sarcasm smiley also wasn't a typo, just so you know..

Hahahahaha! You rarely fail to make me laugh! Where do you come up with this stuff?Thinking up the idea probably took longer than drawing it in this case.

It was originally going to be me showing these people a steam artillery gun, and then one of them would say "It'll never catch on", but a) I already did that joke with WFUS and the wooden bazooka, b) it wouldn't make any sense, why would they say it wouldn't catch on? and c) it wouldn't really be that funny.

So I started going "Steam Bazooka? That's a bit funnier, because it wouldn't be portable, but it's still not that funny. Hmm... Steam Shotgun? Steam Handgun? Oh, wait - Steam Prod...". And the rest is very recent history.

Hahaha, Top Hats! Score! A desire to see worms in top hats was one of the reasons I went with this theme. That and steam powered war machines, so thanks Paul Power.

Also thanks to Shadowman, because I actually was curious what an advertisement for Dr. Linton Charlesworth's Wonder Serum would look like. Apparently that stuff will kill you...like any good Wonder Serum should.

Y'know, the line and circle tools are often criticised in this forum. But when the things you want to draw are actually linear and circular, I think an exception can be made...

Maybe, but this way was more fun.

(I appreciate that there appears to be some hypocrisy here given my previous criticisms of that picture you drew in the "MS Paint is not an excuse..." thread. Bear in mind though that in that thread, you were supposed to be demonstrating that you could make good pics in Paint, so the extra effort would have helped. Me, I'm just messing about looking for a way to illustrate my joke idea).
