The sound stops and starts in the game and seems to make the game also stutter.
I have no soundcard, only motherboard. Does this matter? Do I need a soundcard?

thanks

Does the motherboard have a built-in soundcard?

if it didnt then he must have a "voodoo" device transmitting the sound data from the game to his speakers =)

Oh, sorry, I'm tired. I'm in japan so I'm very jet lagged. Got meself a FC Twin for 10000 Yen (~£50, $100USD), SMB2, and a Wonderswan.

No anbisnismn, this should not matter. Most modern motherboards come with an integrated sound card; your motherboard must have one of these or you wouldn't hear any sound at all.

Have you tried re-installing?
Checked there are no other programs running in the background that might interfere?

Is the CD OK, it might be having a hard time reading the music if not.

The "pause" you experience may be from the disc looping since it uses analog audio under Win9x. the computer locks up when such a thing occurs under Win9x
