I have a new Xbox 360 and I'm trying to connect to Xbox Live for the first time. I have Comcast Cable internet which is connected directly to the modem from the wall jack. I have connected the modem directly to my Xbox via an internet cable. My Xbox is brand new so none of the factory settings have been changed, i.e. IP address and DNS is set to automatic. When I run the Xbox Live Test I get the following: Network adapter-wired, IP address-confirmed, DNS-failed. Before anyone suggests it I have already tried power cycling the modem and it didn't work. Is there any solution?

Try setting the I.P address manually, and the DNS manually. Also, check that the router isn't blocking the Xbox 360 with its firewall, some routers do that. The DNS address should be the router's I.P address, and the I.P address can be anything as long as it follows this pattern;

192.168.0.[number, must be less than 255]

So you can have;

192.168.0.1 -[Note; this is usually the router's I.P.]
192.168.0.2 -[Probably your computer's I.P.]
192.168.0.3
192.168.0.4

and so on.

Not all routers are like yours. My new one defaults to 192.168.2.1, and my old one 192.168.1.1. I've also seen one that's something like 127.0.0.0 or something. Also, if your ISP gives a static DNS IP, it's best to use that one. My ISP's automatic thing doesn't work half the time so I have to use their static one (which shouldn't even work for dynamic IP customers but it does :confused:).

If someone can convert that into newb-speek, that'd be great.
