I love how he insists phreaking is alive and kicking to this day just because he picked that one to jump behind. sorry, I did a term paper on the history of hacking. did a fair bit of research for said report and there was a listed DATE of when phreaking became obsolete. after the leader of the whole thing (a guy by the name of cap'n crunch, named after the whistles in that cereal that were the perfect tone for phreaking) shared all his tricks and so many people and so many were making free calls, they switched the system. we no longer use the same tonal-recognition system for phones, so I really don't see HOW you could even evolve the method. hell, talking on the phone is free these days anyway, basically. you have to pay for cell-phones, but most actual land-lines are something like 2 or 3 cents a minute around here. hardly worth the time to hack. sure, you could hack cell phones, but people DO that, and it's hacking software rather than just the phone connection.

Isometric is fantastic! Take RPGs! All the old isometric ones were generally better (and hell, _prettier_) than crappy 3D for the sake of 3D (although Oblivion and Skyrim are exceptions to the "prettier").

My point was that isometric is not a good method for displaying a 2D environment. I wasn't implying 3D. Isometric chess, for example, is awful. Civilization 2 used an isometric perspective for no reason at all, and it was weird. Civ 2 is a great game, but it would have been better if it just stuck with the normal top-down grid style, in my opinion. This game (Worms Evolved) should not be isometric, in my opinion.

If isometric means impossible 3D angle with no depth of field for the sake of easy presentation, then the game is already isometric and it's fine. If isometric means rotating the board 45 degrees and squishing it by 50%, then requiring the use of taller game piece sprites, that's a bad idea for a 2D gridded game.

To respond to you regarding isometric (in the first definition presented above) as a superior way to present a 3D RPG or strategy game ("Heroes Of Might And Magic", "Transport Tycoon", "Baldur's Gate", "Diablo", and "Starcraft" come to mind), I completely agree.

You just need a steeper angle, making it nearly a top down view, but just enough to see the sides of a 3D polygonal model.

I would post the negative part instead of the positive part because the negative part is actually interesting, whereas the positive part is often just interpreted as, "I am having fun! Yay! I am happy. I like this [media], so you should like it too, and if you don't, I don't like you!" which isn't true for me. I can like people without liking what they like! A great example of this is KRD. We have plenty of disagreements, but he's still one of my favorite people in the whole wide world.

This game (Worms Evolved) should not be isometric, in my opinion.
Funnily enough, one of my original long term goals for Worms Evolved was to code it into a standalone game that was isometric (Disgaea was the main inspiration for me designing it in the first place), but that's mainly because the original design had all of the grid squares have height, rather than a flat board with "land health".

Ultimately, after removing any notion of height to make it easier to play over a forum, I found that I just prefer it in its simplified state. There's no longer any good reason to make it isometric.

Speaking of Worms Evolved, I've got the urge to start it up again, but there's no way in hell I'd do it if I had to calculate everything and update the images manually again. I may look into writing myself a program in Game Maker that does it all for me and spits out images (Game Maker is great for that sort of thing). There's just something about playing it over a forum and all the banter surrounding it that makes it all the more awesome, even if it is a bit unwieldy to play this way.

It takes daring to actually share negative opinions, since others are passionate about protecting their idolized beliefs, which causes anyone who places said beliefs under honest scrutiny to be placed under a vengeful scrutiny themselves.

A bit like us really... :(difference being that we all just migrated to an active forum at various times and haven't left yet cause we're stubborn and enjoy the company. they set up the forum entirely for the purpose of talking to just the few of them.
