View Full Version : Worms 4 Sound Problem

Okay, so a long, long time ago, I downloaded the demo of Worms 4. Lo and behold, sound doesn't work.
Then, six months later, I decide to boot it up again. Sound works, despite no changes to my computer short of an extra 512 MB of RAM. No other new hardware, no new drivers.
So I go out and buy the game.
Sound doesn't work in the full game...
So I try everything conceivable and even contact the Codemasters tech support (incidentally, they were NOT helpful).

And now...
I have been reduced to the lowest of the low.

I have...

POSTED ON THE FORUM.

Basically, no sound whatsoever works no matter what I do. I have no other problems with the game. Sound still works in the demo, and I have the US version.
When I try to update the chipset drivers for my motherboard, my system crashes, but it doesn't seem to be a hardware problem and I'm definitely installing the right ones, so it suggests an installation error, a problem with the drivers themselves, or a massive software problem.

System specs:
Processor: AMD Dual-Core 3700+
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce 6600 LE
Motherboard: NVIDIA nForce 4 AMD Motherboard
RAM: 2.00 GB (one 1GB stick and two .5GB sticks)
Extra hardware which has absolutely no bearing on anything as it was installed after the purchase of the game and nothing has changed: AGEIA PhysX Processing Unit

And now for the obligatory:

HALP MEEEEEEE

I assume you've tried reinstalling. There are probably launcher commands to switch sound drivers or something but I can't remember them off hand, or even if W4M has an Advanced box in the launcher. (If not, you'll have to edit the shortcut path). Try looking in the readme. Also try updating your sound card's drivers.

Err, just to clarify - which version do you have? Has it got Codemasters or Majesco on the box? As Codemasters only published the European version of the game, not the North American version

If you do have the Codemasters version, check it's patched from http://www.wormsmayhem.com - the Majesco version does not need the patch.

I didn't know there was a Codemasters US version. I have the Majesco version.
I haven't tried reinstalling (doh!) so I'll try that.
I think my sound drivers are already up to date but I'll check again.
No Advanced box in the launcher, sorry.

There isn't, it's because you said you contacted codemasters support.

Oh.

So I tried reinstalling the game - no help. Sound drivers are up to date, and I updated my graphics drivers while I was at it. That didn't help (why would it?).
I may have to just go out and buy a new sound card.

You misunderstood my post - Codemasters published the European version only, Majesco published the NA version only.

Well, I worked on it some more.
I decided that I might as well try to fix it by just emulating a different sound card, so I downloaded VDMSound, but even though it worked fine on my old computer, I couldn't get it to work on this one. And I couldn't find any different sound card emulators.
It's as if everything I try is destined to go wrong.
