View Full Version : Wait... No hats in the DS version? Really?

So, I'm on the IGN Worms forum just now and somebody mentioned how you can only put hats on your worms (the cool little tophats and army helmets, etc) on the PSP version, and not on the DS.

Is that for real? I havn't bought the DS version yet (For some reason WOW2 STILL hasn't came in to my city (Moose Jaw, Canada), yet! EB Games and Wal Mart and everywhere else doesn't have it in!!!), but I was really looking forward to that feature, it looked like a ton of fun!

Can someone tell me what exactly the differences between the DS/PSP versions are? Like the little DS minigames, and all that?

I really wanted to put WW2 G.I. helmets on my team! :(

Can somebody help me out with this all?

Thanks!

Peace and Love,
-Peter

differences:
PSP:
worms can wear hats
higher resolution
you can host a game over the internet
no minigames
difficult to get over wifi
easier flag editor

DS:
no hats
fun minigames using the DS's special traits
easier to get over wifi
has two screens
landscape editor

those are the main differences

That's actually a surprisingly big factor for me. I'm still going to buy the game, but it seems more dissapointing now, you know?

EDIT: btw, putting "Two Screens" isn't really something to put on the features list.

The PSP has "One big screen instead!"...

haha, know what I mean? "Touch Screen" would make sense, but not "Two Screens", :)

the hats are too tiny anyway to see on the PSP

BUT, on the OFFICIAL(!!!) Worms Open Warfare 2 website, under the "Worm Customisation" it clearly says:

"What's better than completely destroying an enemy team of worms? Doing so whilst wearing a bowler hat and dancing on their graves! Worms: Open Warfare 2 features a huge array of customisation options for you to personalize your invertebrate army with. Customize the look, sound, and even victory dance of your worms!"

Yeah? "Wearing a bowler hat". Don't tell me that that is not going to make me assume that there are the hats in the DS version, where this was posted.

"Customize the look, sound..."

What "Look" customizing is there, then? Certainly not a "Huge Array".

What's the deal, Team17? Getting my hopes up like that? Bummer. Did no one else catch this?

Not to mention the fact that EVERY worm on the website is wearing some sort of headgear...

Well you can change the worms colour, victory dance and speech in the DS version , so its kinda telling the truth.

Nevertheless, it is still misleading, which isn't a good quality, is it?

Well the Ds version makes up for it with its cool minigames
And it's apparently the best choice for online play.

all opinions, I suppose. but I really am dissapointed at the lack of the hats in the DS one. Everything I saw pretty much led me to believe that, you know?

And the question of how every worm in the animations on the website is wearing headgear, and how it says that bit about "wearing a bowler hat" in the DS(!!!) website.

Not cool.

The DS version is the best! touch screen and duel sceens! and it has a place for minigames which can be used to earn money and fun.

easier flag editor

The DS has a better flag editor since it's touch screen.

Not what I was getting at initially, and this will make me sound like a bitter jerk, but I actually prefer D-pad controlled designing for stuff like that, over touch screen. Perhaps it's because I'm left handed, I don't know, maybe that doesn't does have something to do with it, but probably doesn't!

I've outlined the Pros/Cons of both versions in another thread, but here they are again for your aid.

PSP

Pros:

Higher quality graphics.
Hats, I suppose.
Single Player Time Attack missions.
Online rankings and Clan support.
The ability to zoom in and out of the map.
Better Flag Editor.
Higher quality FMV sequences.
The number of maps, flags and landscapes you can save is only limited by the capacity of your PSP Memory Stick Pro Duo.

Cons:

Built largely on the original Worms Open Warfare engine, with modified physics. It's an improvement, but it's still not perfect.
Online rankings are broken, according to many people who post here.
The crosshair is misaligned to the actual direction of the show.
Speechbank voice files are not used properly in accordance with previous Worms games. "Noo.wav" is used when a worm dies, for instance. (Well, it annoys me...)
Slight delay between when you press a button and an action commences. It's a very small delay but it's there.
The D-pad on the original PSP makes roping a real chore. I'm unable to check if this is also the case for the slimer redesigned PSP.
Online play seems markedly slower on the PSP version between turns.

DS

Pros:

Built largely on the Worms World Party game engine used in the Ngage version (which is itself a port of the PSone version) and so bears a stronger resemblence, in terms of the game engine, to Worms Armageddon and Worms World Party. (Source: http://www.radio-ninty.co.uk/podcasts/radioninty10.mp3)
Better map editor.
In place of the Time Attacks, the DS version has the Laboratory - a selection of games that require you to use the touchscreen or microphone with interesting results.
The ability to have an overview of the entire terrain at all times displayed on the top screen.
Speechbanks are used in accordance to WA standards.
Crosshair is properly alligned.

Cons:

Lower graphic quality.
No hats.
Due to limited space on the DS card, you can only save a limited number of teams, flags and landscapes.
Map editor only works with stylus, which is great for general drawing but no t so much for intricate pixelart.
Online Play relies on Nintendo's Friend Code system.
Lower-quality FMV video.

Also, why are people placing so much importance on hats of all things? I still don't understand it.

In the long term, online play is the main reason you'll come back to this game. Not hats :D. Ds seems the better choice in my opinion. Give Two Tribes some of your money :D

I would be really to know which has shipped more. DS or PSP. Im pretty sure DS sales are double or at least not 1.5x the sales of the PSP version.

Peter_Mc

I'm just places importance on the hats because the OFFICIAL WEBSITE led me to believe that they were in there, and I'm not a huge fan of that, you know?

So, umm, what exactly is an "FMV" video? Is it some sort of cutscene? I'm not too sure about that, but I'm not too terribly worried about that sort of thing!:)

Anyways, STILL nobody has answered my question as to why they would mention the "Bowler Hat" and all that that I kept talking about above in the website and not the actual game!

EDIT: Your big list forgot to mention the Single Cart troubles in the "Cons" for the DS! :P :)

FMV = full motion video. So saying "FMV video" is like sayign "full motion video video", but I used it because... well, not everyoen knows what FMV stands for.

i sort of disagree about the DS flag editor being easier. since you have to use the stylus, it's easy to touch the wrong place where you dont want to pixel to be. with the PSP you can put the pixel right where you want it.

Darkspark, the DS version will sell more. For one thing, there are FAR more DS consoles out there than PSPs.

Peter_Mc, web sites are created by the publisher's marketing dept. Some times there are small errors, particularly when a game is released across multiple platforms and end results vary according to technical limitations. Its not deliberate, its just a small error. I hope you are enjoying the game otherwise.

Yeah, this is unfortunate, but it's more likely the result of carelessness and/or lack of time rather than a deliberate attempt to mislead. Notice that the PSP version's text is exactly the same.

Not to mention the fact that EVERY worm on the website is wearing some sort of headgear...
Well, that's the artwork. What did you want them to do, make a different set of artwork for each version (and have the DS's artwork be less entertaining, to boot)? Also, note that the first W:OW game also had the worms wearing hats in the artwork, and NEITHER version of the actual game had hats (as far as I know).

Oh, and also, there are hats in the DS version, but only if you select the girder (hard hats). :)

Anyway, would you rather have a lousy game where the characters have hats, or a great game where they don't? Of course there's the third option of a good game with hats, but my only point here is that it sure seems like you (and a LOT of other people) are putting complaints about minor aesthetic points above whether or not this is fun.

Well, I don't have WOW2 just yet, I've been phoning every store in town almost everyday since it was released, but there was some problem in shipping or some silly thing and so nobody has the game yet!

But rest assured, the hat problem isn't enough to make me not buy this game, that is for sure. Even with the hats (which seriously, I was looking forward to!!!) and that crappy single cart business, it still looks amazing, and I can't wait to get it! :)

(And of course I know they wouldn't deliberately put that on the website, it's just that they accidently did and it got my hopes up was what made me angry!)

I was let down by the hat thing as well, it seemed to be a major promoting point, and the DS box art has them in hats. It's a bit confusing, but you know what? I got the game, and it's just so awesome, I don't care anymore :P Honestly, I've played my cousins Worms game on Xbox Live a lot, and this one blows that one out of the water IMO(though if I'm not mistaken that one is a lot cheaper :P I'm sure I'll get it too when I get a 360 :P). So far I actually have no complaints with this game... that's rare for me :P Even the Wifi mode has surprised me with just how good it is... even random matches! :D I'm well pleased :)

I don't think Team17 or THQ ever really pushed the hats thing. It was listed as a customisation feature but it's hardly pivotal.

Also, the boxart for the original Worms Open Warfare on both formats had them wearing hats. So did the boxart for Worms Armageddon. In fact pretty much every Worms game save Worms 3D has featured a worm wearing a hat of some description, so you can't use that as a benchmark for the number of hats featured in the final game.

I am also left handed, and I am also terrible at using a drawing tablet :D

I don't think its because Im left handed though, my most used art progam is Paint...

Funny thing about this hat debate, I was expecting them to be in the game. Not because I'd read the website or previews (I hadn't :D), I just thought they'd be there. So when I found they weren't, it was more a case of "Oh well, let's see what els- VICTORY DANCES!" rather than "Aww, was looking forward to that". I don't know what I would have thought if I had read the websites and previews, probably still wouldn't mind.

There was a point here somewhere...

Damnation!!

Do you use the mouse in your left or right hand? I'm left-handed but I use the mouse in my right hand, like most people.

Edit: Hmm, maybe I should try switching to the elft hand. i wonder if that would improve my aim on Bioshock?

JammyAH
13 Sep 2007, 20:37
I do use my right hand for the mouse, yeah. I do most things with my right, but some with left (like holding the stylus and writing).

My general co-ordination, as any of my friends will tell you, is insane*. So I guess I'm screwed which ever hand I use!

*In a negative way

Topic, er.... hats. Yeah. Woo! I like customization in all my games (Even have this odd habit of switching gun hands on CS to left), but I don't mind not having hats.

On another side note, talking about artwork, I loved the picture on the inside of the DS box :D That also had hats in it, though.

I can talk for my country :D
