View Full Version : WA accessing CD drive during games...

Question regarding Worms Armageddon accessing the CD drive (for sounds?) during a game. Is there anyway to circumvent this access to the CD? It always results in a the game pausing while the CD drive gets up to speed...

Thanks in advance.

This doesn't do exactly what you're after, but running the game from an image rather than the actual disc makes it run a lot smoother. Certainly should take care of the slowdowns and pauses.

The following should work too:

Download WormKit (http://worms.thecybershadow.net/wormkit/) and install the File Override module. Then, copy all of the sounds on the CD to the coreect place on the hard-drive. (So, in your WA directory make the folder data/streams and copy the music into that folder and the folders of data/resources and copy everything into that).

Now, make sure all of your shortcuts point to run the wormkit.exe instead of wa.exe and this should now load the sounds off of the hard-drive.

Excellent Melon! I've already got the Wormkit thingy installed and the file override and shortcuts done, so I'll follow that method and see if it improves things.

Thanks

Using a CD image requires less HDD space though.

I don't quite see the logic of that one, I'm afraid Bonz. Surely by just moving the files WA needs, you save disc space?

Ok, just to get this correct:

The contents of Data/Streams/ on the CD goes into DATA/Streams in the Worms Armageddon folder?

Where do the speech files in Data/User/Speech on the CD go? Into the User folder in the main Worms directory or into a newly created folder DATA/user/Speech/

wkFileOverride treats the base WA directory as the main CD drive. So if there's a folder data/streams on the CD it goes into C:/Team17/worms-armageddon-directory-here/data/streams, or whatever.

If the folder you are looking for doesn't exist on the hard-drive, then you'll need to create it. I think folders are case-sensitive too, so be careful with that.

Well, you're right, but the streams and the speechbanks make 281 MB of the 528 MB that the whole CD has.
And I guess the remaining 158 MB of additional space used by a CD image are nothing compared to the tremendous amounts of replays and maps, and also not needing a CD in your drive at all.

a cd image contains whats already on the hdd, copying stuff not already on the hdd results in less wasted space.

Using an image makes the game run infinitely smoother, the loading times are decreased and you don't have to worry about someday having to buy another CD when the current one explodes in your drive and leaves you and your computer mutilated for life.

Unless those 158 MB of extra hard drive space are extremely important to you, it would be wiser to create an image.

is it possible to make a CD-RW image? i mean one that allows stuff in the image to edit the contents of the image? because then we wouldn't need to install it at all ;)

There is program MagicISO that allows you to crate and edit CD imgaes... he is realy great program... just it is not free... if you download it download and MagicDisk(program for making virtual CD drives...)

btw If you have ****ty CD rom like I have nakibg ISO image will be soooooo loooooong... but worthy...

btw I have only 10 GB of HDD and I choose to create an ISO instead of coping that sounds on my computer...

I tried using the method over at nanacide and using Clone CD it "Read to Image file" about 1 % in ~10-15 min, gulp... Do the maths...

My disk drive's a DVD RW drive. Is that why it would take so long if I go ahead...

Sometimes the first few % took ages for me as well, but once it moved on from there it finished the process in a few minutes. The most likely cause for this is a scratched disc, but it can also be caused by some CD/DVD drives like Rodent says.

You could try leaving it on overnight if you have the patience. If that doesn't do the trick, there are other programs for the job out there as well; I personally use PowerISO. You could also try creating an .ISO file rather than a .CCD one with CloneCD and see if it does anything.

Regarding that wkFileOveride module that comes with Wormkit. I've installed it properly in the WA directory, but no matter where I put the contents of the CD, the game still accesses the CD for the sounds...

However, it seems that sometimes the second and subsequent time the sounds are accessed it doesn't. It's just not consistent.

Precisely how should this FileOverride thing work?

did you try playing without the disc? copy the contents of the data folder off your cdrom and place it into the games data folder and overwrite everything.

then remove your cdrom and enjoy teh game via wormkit.exe.

wkFileOverride alone won't be enough to let you play without a CD. It wasn't created for that purpose. If you copy the entire disk's contents to your hard drive, you will minimize disc usage, but you'd still need a CD.

It's because of a copy protection. It was the same with my W:A cd when I created an image some years ago. It took many hours but it has been worth the hassle.
