OK, number one, if you do decide to include this, please please please don't delay the next update to put it in.
To the feature:
What I want is for people to be able to add comments to replays, online and offline, that can be viewed by opening the chat pannel. These could be made both during and after the game. This could be useful if you recieve a long replay with no readme, it could tell you for example where to start the playback at. It could also show the maker(s) of the replay. Also give the option for the comments to be edit passworded, so that no-one except the maker can modify them, so people can't pass off others' work as their own. There are many other possible uses of this, for example explaining how to do a move/glitch performed, saying who is who, and others.
So yeah, discuss this feature, and constructive criticism only.

I can only see this useful for replays where you try to teach a certain move.

All replays come with information, either in the forum or from the person you recieved it, surely it looks like something that can be useful and it doesn't seem like it would take a lot of time to implement (correct me if I wrong), but it doesn't bother me one bit.

Sounds handy, you'd get my vote. If this was a poll.

but? just play online and chat and voila, you can comment :P so this would only be helpful for offline play.

This has been suggested before at least twice (http://forum.team17.co.uk/showthread.php?t=20449) in a more simple form. Thanks for posting it again! The more incentive to add this feature, the better.

By the way, it's a fairly simple matter to edit comments into a replay file.

As long as they are not encrypted yet.

By the way, this feature is already present in the tool-assist version of WA. This tool-assisted mission speedrun (http://www.nanacide.com/missionrecords/replays/%5Bwa29%5D%5B2%5D%5B6.78%5D%5BDeadcode+Lex%5DToolA ssisted.wagame) has a replay comment denoting where Deadcode left off and where I took over. :) I'll be recommending to Deadcode that the feature be slipped into the public version of WA when he comes around again.

That's where I got the idea from. I thought it'd be great if the general public could have this feature ;)

This is a really good idea. As already said, it's useful for teaching. I've thought up an idea that could embed with it...

When you are writing the comments in the replay and in the game, if you put "/pause <MILLISECONDS>" before your comment, like
"/pause 400 This is when you have to be quick!"

The replay will pause for 400 milliseconds and the chatbox will pop-down by itself, and the message is displayed. After that, gameplay returns.

This would be cool if you wanted to teach about a special position the worm has to be in before the rope re-attaches for example.

Maybe when you right-click a replay file it can have another menu otion incuded called "Add comment". Then it gives you 2 boxes. One is the time in the replay you would like to insert a comment, and the other is what the comment actually is. All you would need to do is note down the exact time you want to input a comment at before you do this.

or just play the file and pause it when you want to add a comment and push page down and type it up and press enter :P

Certainly sounds useful.

Or... whichever is easier to code?

Although painstaking, it is possible to add your own comments into a replay, all you need is a hex editor and a lot of patience.

It does not seem to cause checksum errors, although I've yet to try adding a comment on the same frame as another action.

I don't get the "lot of patience" part.

You need to find the location in the file and add in the correct hex strings before and after the text you want to add.

Cybershadow's wiki site contains a lot of information about the replay structure

That surely reminds me of something.

Forgive my ignorance, but has it ever been possible to and rewind replays?

If you meant to say fast forward, then yes, either right click the replay before loading it and select "Playback at..." or just use the number keys to select a replay speed. (Shift+Number slows it down)

As for rewinding, that can't be done. Other than pressing r to resume the start of the replay (or if you selected playback at it will fast forward to that point again).

No, I meant to say rewinding. It just annoys me that when viewing replays I can't replay certain parts of it. However, its slightly comforting to know that I can set where i start playing the replay at. I didnt know this:eek:
