I will get both but I need an excuse to use my PSP, so I'll probably play the PSP version the most (it also looks nicest).

I don't have a PSP (nor do I want one) so I'll most likley get the DS version.

I'm going to rent it first though. I almost made the mistake of buying the first W:OW without having played it yet.

The touch screen minigame video on IGN looks pretty awful. Hopefully the others are better.

I was thinking about getting a PSP just to play this, but changed my mind after realising how awesome the DS version will be.

The minigames are there as fun extras to the main bulk of the game (of which there are tons) the blast one is my favourite.

No-one has noticed (at least I've not read) that you can have tall vertical levels now too..

Well the last worms game for both handhelds, the ds version was pretty bad compaird to the psp version. Plus all the extra online options are a big + for the psp version. So once again ill get psp version.

I herd that before but I didn't really think of it as there being especially high levels but rather normal sized levels viewable with the DS's two screens.

I always felt strangely limited in level editors in the previous worms games because of the height restrictions. Making a super tall level would be sweet.

Am I getting this right? I don't wanna get my hopes up over a misunderstanding x_X

I'd get the PSP version because I don't have a DS.

I can't wait for this game to be released.

From what I've seen one website said it will be released in July another said august.

Whichever version THQ send me, I'll be buying the other one. :) I want to be able to throw down with any challenger, anytime, anywhere, on any format. Because, y'know, I'm sad like that.

Y'know, sometimes I wonder just how much of my money Team 17 has had. Once you take out the publisher's cut, and the stockist's cut.

Darkspark
11 May 2007, 17:00
Team 17 have probably had less than a fiver off me.

I bought my copy of W:A in a jewel case back in 2002 with nothing else for £1.99 at woolies. Apparently, they were doing a clear out and they found this without its box. At this time, you couldn't find the game anywhere, unlike now where its in every "budget" range of GAME.

I got a retail copy recently for a friend, that set me back a fiver. And they've not played it. They said it was "lost" somewhere.

Spadge

We get about 7-10% of retail price, for your info.

The majority of costs are publisher/marketing and then distribution and retail (taking a whopping 30-45%). Games fans make the assumption that tons of sales (say 1million) is 1 million x £30/$50 for Team17 (and lots of pies/beers). Many major console games these days need approaching 1million sales before they actually generate profit given how actually expensive it is to develop premium titles.

Actually, how much does it cost you (developers alone) to develop a premium title, if you have a publisher?

Spadge
11 May 2007, 18:31
That totally depends on content, game, platform, time etc. There's no rule of thumb.

How much did Worms4 cost you?

Spadge
11 May 2007, 18:43
I'm not prepared to give out exact details, but with 35 or so people working on it for about 16-18 months, it'd be somewhere in the region of $3-4m. Not chicken feed. And that's fairly typical.

Darkspark
11 May 2007, 19:40
Would I be right in assuming that the PSP version of WOW2 has higher development costs than the WOW2 DS?

Don't feel pressured to answer Spadge, but what sold more of WOW1?

PSP edition or DS edition?
I would assume you needed to sell fewer DS versions to break even than the PSP edition.

In addition, would there ever be a steam/team17 partnership? It would cut publishing a lot whilst attracting a wider audience.

Spadge
12 May 2007, 02:24
Any platform that has higher visual requirements and more content (because of that) tend to cost more. PSP games are more costly than DS generally, bigger teams, longer dev periods.

PSP out-performed DS on the first game, but we'd certainly expect it to be very interesting this time around due to the market (many more DS's around) and also the fact that the DS version, in all honesty, is very, very good - and that's not detracting from what is a great PSP version.

It's an overwhelming return to form for the game, I think it's going to be very cool to see how much fun this game will help create.

Squirminator2k
12 May 2007, 09:39
Why does squriminator2k get worms free in the mail from thq?

That's... that's a difficult question to answer. The short, easy answer would probably be "I run Dream17, the web's premier (and only) Team 17 fansite." But the problem with that explanation is that it gives the false impression that simply having a fansite entitles you to free stuff. Sadly, it doesn't work like that. I know this from past experience.

The long, more complex answer is that I wouldn't get anything from Team 17's various publishers (Codemasters, THQ, Sony, et al) without the help of Spadge and others at Team 17, who have very kindly kindly pointed me in the direction of people to speak to so that I can have the latest information up on our site (I say "our" because it's not just me anymore - there's five of us working on the site now). And I certainly wouldn't have anything from THQ were it not for their superb PR department, who have been so kind to both Dream17 and RealVG over the past couple of years.

I don't want to toot my own horn, but Dream17 is a pretty big project. It's the culmination of nearly 4 years of work. It sometimes surprises me how popular it is. I mean, in the grand scheme of things, it's not by any means a top-ranking site on Alexa, but it's pretty popular with the Amiga and Retrogaming communities, It's also very surprising when you see the site being mentioned at places like the Something Awful Forums and linked from people's MySpace accounts (Dream17 has [its own MySpace now (http://www.myspace.com/team17fans)] by the way). We were even used as a news source for an Xbox 360 website last year, during the development of Worms XBLA.

I'm started to get carried away, so I'll stop now. I don't usually follow projects through to their end, so for Dream17 to still be kicking about, and for it to be as popular as it is, really makes me feel proud. And I'm proud of the awesome people who help keep it ticking over as well. :)

Sidenote: Team 17 have had £42.65 of my money, based on the info Spadge gave me. That's enough for 17 pints of beer, or 35.542 Pukka pies.

As much as I'd like the DS version (I have both the handhelds), I think I may actually for the PSP release this time around, due to the easy sharing of custom landscapes online, the extended online functionality (Nintendo's Friend-Code system is really starting to irritate me with regards to having to restrict the game), and Time Attack, which essentially looks like a W:A's BattleRace without the Battle part.

I have to say I was surprised when I learned RopeRace is officially being supported in the game, big plus for me, I just hope the rope physics are reminiscent of the 2d Worms titles.

Regardless, I'm glad both versions are looking to shape up well, as last time around, the DS rendition was easily pin-pointed as the worst of the two versions, but here they look to be on an even playing field.

If it's rope racing you're into then I would avoid the PSP version. In WOW, the D-pad makes the ninja rope very difficult to manoeuvre.

Is this in comparison to the PC Worms titles (since you can easily shift between left/right arrow keys unlike a d-pad) or the DS rendition of W:OW?

Could just be an adjustment thing possibly, unless the rope physics were changed much since?

Speakin of the RopeRace, I can't recall reading if there's any AI for it, or if it's hot-seat/WiFi only?

Would be nice if the analog nub was supported for movement on the PSP. It was only used for scrolling the map in WOW1.

Would be nice if the analog nub was supported for movement on the PSP. It was only used for scrolling the map in WOW1.

Last I heard the analog nub was annoying and unreliable. Why do you want analog motion in Worms anyway? It's not like creeping along slowly or moving in any direction other than "left" or "right" would be useful.

Wormetti
15 May 2007, 05:27
It still beats the PSP d-pad (d-buttons). Same with xbox 360, everyone uses the analog stick to play worms even though there is a d-pad. The 360 has two sticks though, so the 2nd one is used for scrolling (only during your turn, damn auto follow stops scrolling during others turn). The rope is really too fast on 360, so roping is actually harder than on PSP WOW1 but that has nothing to do with the controls and everything to do with the code. Since I have never played Worms with the analog nub on PSP, I can't say for sure if it would be better and even if I thought it was better, some people would disgree, so having custom controls is always the best solution.

AndrewTaylor
15 May 2007, 19:41
Not always. If you're going to be playing your mates in a hotseat game then it's best if everyone's used to the same controls (unless you want to get into different teams with different settings, and that has its own set of drawbacks). I can't imagine many people do that on PSP, mind.

Edit: Except in lectures.

18 May 2007, 14:55
We have tweaked the rope quite a bit since the original Open Warfare to make it more playable on PSP and it feels much better in this version :)

After playing the rope races on Open Warfare 2, it really is more about timing and speed rather than aiming and firing, using the d-pad is perfectly adequate for the job and not as awkward as you may think.

(We're not using the analog nub, we tried it out early on but it proved to be more annoying than using the d-pad)

Whoa, the result of being inactive for ages...I miss new Worms games.

I'll probadly get it for the PSP. I bought Open Warfare last summer and it was really nice, although it was no match for the "real" non-mobile 2D Worms games. The new one seems very interesting though...I just wish I hadn't wasted my money on the original OW. The new one seems better or at least improved in every aspect. :)

I wish it will be more than just an another update though. The ability to play online is welcome, but I wish there were more interesting game modes (Puzzle sounds too much like SP challenges to me).

EDIT- And I thought W:OW was gonna be their last Worms game? Maybe they'll never quit the series :P

DS since I have one. (Hats would be nice but, meh.)

I'm excited for Worms: OW2, it looks like its taking everything good plus more from the worms series and pumping them into one game. The new weapons, at least on paper, seem to be really well thought out ideas. I hope there is as much or more customizability as it's PC predecessors. I'm waiting to read a review when it is released, but if it isn't over hyped or exaggerated Team 17 has one returning fan.

I only own a PSP so my decision is clear. ;)

What I'm most excited about is the online-play. I only have two sisters and none of them is really 'good' in playing worms and they don't play it often. Like this the Open Warfare series will be much more like Worms on the PC (Armageddon / World Party).

I just got a psp and I decided I will get the psp version for better grafx and online play. Also, my psp game collection is lacking in size compared to my ds collection. So, I'll get that version unless the ds version turns out better. Or because I might not want to pay the extra $10 for the psp version if I feel cheap. XD

Custom names will be allowed on PSP in random games but on DS, you will only get custom names if you play people on your friends list (Nintendo's requirement). Apparently Team17 has more control over the rankings/leaderboards for the PSP version but I don't have specifics on the differences.

Off the top of my head, the PSP infrastructure features are:
4 player, Deathmatch, Forts and Rope racing modes.
Play for fun or play for points
Good selection of game search parameters
Online profiles
World location, Medals Won, Custom Flag, etc.
Leaderboard snapshots
Sharable user-generated schemes
Sharable user-generated landscapes
Buddy list (with game invites) and block list
Clans (with game invites)
Leaderboards (not all of them 'nice')
Weekly, monthly, annual and permanent between-gamers
Same again between each clan
Same again for each clan (members only boards)
Maggies Drawers, Hard Cases and Valiant Failures
Weekly awards (worm of the match, most useless, etc.)
Downloadable content (flags and landscapes)
Oh, and host migration.

No argument here.

Right now I'm weighing my options for getting a PSP, but even assuming I have access to both a PSP and DS for the game's release I'm still kind of on the fence about it. I have no idea what's entailed in getting a PSP online, whereas my DS is all set and good to go. On the other hand, I can't deny that I'm a sucker for good graphics where good graphics are called for, and I suspect the PSP version is capable of holding a significantly larger audio bank (i.e. soundtrack and voicebanks), so I'll probably go with that.

Just standard wireless kit is needed - a wireless router for home, or you need to be in a wireless hotspot when out and about to get online.

quick note about the psp vs the ds quality. I read on this site or another that the issues with the graphics have been resolved and they are giving much greater attention to the DS version now, due to WOW1 issues. This one will probrably be a tie for graphics wise but I'm all for the wireless modes on the DS as well as the exceptional quality of durability on the DS system. I don't want a PSP just becuase I had one and it fell out of my pocket and blammo no more PSP. I suggest DS but PSP is good if thats the only system you own.
