A first person shooter could work, but I would prefer an RPG. Combine Worms, Warcraft, and The Elder Scrolls series into one.

Plasma, that'd be your cue.

A Worms universe FPS might actually be pretty funny. The only similarities it'd have to Worms games would be some of the weapons and the worms themselves. But, could you imagine a game very similar to Rainbow Six: Vegas and throwing a grenade at your opponent and hearing, "Hallelujah!" Or killing a teammate and hearing, "Traitor!" Or running around the multiplayer maps and seeing the headstones of your opponents and teammates wherever they were killed. If done properly, it could work.

Be gentle, Plasma.

Well....

I see no reason why the Worms 4 models couldn't be exported to XSI somehow, and made into a Source Game Mod....

Hmm....If I knew how to change the way a gamemode works in source, and how to export a Maya model to XSI to port them to Source, I might be able to accomplish some sort of result....

Weapon models, easy...(I do Gmod Models, they work with all HL2 stuff)
Weapon Scripts, well... does ordinary Source support LUA? If not, it's Gmod 10 time....(make an addon, a gamemode for it)
Port worm models to playermodels (Should be easy enough...seen it done with Sonic Heroes, and Mario before...)
Compile mod, no big deal...

You know, this might actually work. I'm not saying I can do it, I need to learn more about Lua scripting, modeling, exporting.etc but it is indeed possible with the Source Engine.

I'd rather see a Worms-themed RTS game, á la Dawn of War.

So you've been writing for RealVG today, have you?

I'd rather see a Worms-themed RTS game, á la Dawn of War.No, no, NO! No more RTS suggestions! Not until you can think of one original thing that Worms would bring to the genre. Or risk having me rant like a mad man again.

Humour. Actual, honest-to-goodness humour.

No, no, NO! No more RTS suggestions! Not until you can think of one original thing that Worms would bring to the genre. Or risk having me rant like a mad man again.

What?

All RTS games -- all of them -- are the same. Seriously, they are. They're all 2D, they all involve some kind of constructor unit who gets to build various buildings and then gets to build various little units each with its own weapons, energy, and what have you. The units and buildings and levels and AI and so forth are different across RTS games, but the gameplay itself is all virtually identical.

Now consider this: Take Worms. We know Worms. Take a 3D version. Now put it in realtime.

There, you're three quarters of the way towards imagining what I think when I hear "Worms RTS". You have a big ol' terrain, which weapon wire would deform (probably as a heightmap for simplicity's sake). Then you create a couple of teams. Probably each one would have some kind of HQ building, a-la Worms Forts. They could then, if they had a worm in there, build another building. A Hospital, say, or a Weapons Lab. A building would take a fair while to construct, and setting another building going would make this slower, so you'd be able to build only at a fixed rate. These buildings would, like in Worms Forts, grant you certain bonuses.

Each team would have, say, a dozen worms maximum. They'd be able to get more from a certain kind of building, heal them at another, and so forth. Also weapons crates and health crates might land around the world at random. Possibly even a new-worm crate (and I appreciate Red Alert has these, but still). Utility crates might let you build bridges over rivers (which would look like girders) or build new "outposts" so you could have two little forts, or just give you a big ol' jetpack to get a worm somewhere remote fast.

No fog of war. Worms has never had fog of war and there's no need to introduce it now.

Lastly, the units are all the same. They're worms. They all have the same health and speed (items notwithstanding -- you may have an inventory full of fastwalk utilities you could grant, Lemmings style, to your troops), and they'd all have the same weapons, at least if they were on the same team.

And the weapons themselves would be trickier to use. Instead of just clicking a unit, then clicking something to attack, you'd have to take the shot. You'd look at wind and distance, then you'd select some units to attack, and select a weapon, then move the mouse to where you wanted them to aim and fire with the mouse button as you would in Worms 3D. Too little power and you'll miss. Too much and you'll miss. This works well in Moonbase Commander so I imagine it'd work pretty well here.

You're thinking of a Worms RTS as an RTS with Worms in. Don't. Think of it as Worms, in an RTS game. (All of the above notwithstanding, I still can't imagine how to coherently shoehorn Worms into an FPS game.)

That's what RTS are, that's what Ben was referring to, that's what everyone sees and compares when they refer C&C, AOE, DOW, etc. That's why I love RTS and that's exactly why I don't wanna see Worms thrown into that old stereotype. Worms doesn't even have unique buildings, units, etc. Worms doesn't work as an RTS in the classical sense.

If you do have an original idea, go right ahead. You, so far, have been the only one to actually show one. Everyone else just goes something like "C&C BUT WITH WORMS!!!!!", thus my reaction. If you go "Worms RTS", that's what I'll think. If you don't, then I'll think differently. Your idea seems like some sort of "Worms Forts real-time", though it's nice and thought out, but a bit complicated at points.

Actually, I believe there once was an RTS game. I don't quite know what happened to it

It never existed, that's what happened to it. Unless we're talking unofficial, Team 17 have (to my knowledge) never developed a Worms RTS.

Actually, there's two types of RTS games. One where you can build units, and one where you have to choose your units at the start and get no reinforcements.
I much prefer the latter.

Cannon Fodder is the single greatest RTS of all time.
