About 3 years, I say. New generations of consoles tend to come about every 5 years or so.

"Generations" are something I've come to realise are a lot of media hype over nothing:

1994: PlayStation
1996: N64
1998: Dreamcast
2000: PS2
2001: Xbox, Gamecube
2005: Xbox 360
2006: Wii, PS3

32-bit: PlayStation, Xbox
64-bit: N64, GameCube
128-bit: Dreamcast, PS2

(I don't know what 360, PS3 and Wii count as, and the above is off the top of my head so may be inaccurate)

Clearly a generation is not defined by the CPU power, nor can it truly be said to be a date-defined attribute, as demonstrated by the proximity of releases prior to and after the 360.

Sony have released a console every 6 years.
Nintendo have released a console every 5 years.
Microsoft have released a console every 4 years.

Whilst each manufacturer retains an internal consistency, the same cannot be said for the industry as a whole, given that a console is pretty much released every 2 years.

Previously, yes. However, for the last two generations, the major companies have been competing with each other much more strongly and try to release around the same time or earlier as the others, to maximise sales.

Vader
16 Feb 2009, 14:10
My post included the last 3 generations (including the current generation). That's generations 5, 6 and 7.

The last 2 generations (6 and 7) have been barely different to the 5th generation. Here, allow me to go further back:

1983: NES
1985: Master System (I refuse to include the MSII as it's essentially the same machine)
1998: Mega Drive
1990: SNES
1994: PlayStation
1996: N64
1998: Dreamcast
2000: PS2
2001: Xbox, Gamecube
2005: Xbox 360
2006: Wii, PS3

As you can see, the largest gap was between the Master System and the Mega Drive (13 years!), after which a console is released more or less every 2 years. In fact, if you take the mean average (26 years/13 consoles) it's exactly 2 years. Plus I've probably forgotten a console.

Plasma
16 Feb 2009, 14:28
..which is why I said that that was the case previously, but not for the last two generations. In the first 8 words of the post you replied to.

That's... not how it works at all.

1998: Mega Drive

I am reasonably certain this is not the case. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mega_Drive)

It's obviously just a typo, considering that Vader placed it between 1985 and 1990, and...

Wait-
Oh gods Vader, you actually said there was a 13-year difference?! How on earth did you manage that big a slip?

..which is why I said that that was the case previously, but not for the last two generations. In the first 8 words of the post you replied to.

My point is it wasn't the case and never has been - I haven't even included handheld consoles in that and you can see that in no discernible way has there been a 5-year gap between any 'generation' since the "generations" are not really "generations" at all.

Wait-
Oh gods Vader, you actually said there was a 13-year difference?! How on earth did you manage that big a slip?

It was a typo and then a rushed observation/calculation as I was heading out the door to sort out real problems (housing benefit, council tax, etc). Allow me to correct myself, since providing incorrect data won't help anything, ever:

1983: NES
1985: Master System (I refuse to include the MSII as it's essentially the same machine)
1988: Mega Drive
1990: SNES
1994: PlayStation
1996: N64
1998: Dreamcast
2000: PS2
2001: Xbox, Gamecube
2005: Xbox 360
2006: Wii, PS3

So, it goes 2 yrs, 3 yrs, 2 yrs, 4 yrs, 2yrs, 2yrs, 2yrs, 1yrs, 4yrs, 1 yr.

That's... not how it works at all.

My point is that categorising consoles by generation doesn't really work at all, so yes that is how it works in as much as categorising them by release date or power works.

Plasma, you're getting awfully defensive over this. Have you taken your pills today? Maybe daddy could touch you in your special place again to make you feel better?

robowurmz
16 Feb 2009, 15:07
Goodness sakes, calm down everbody. And lay off Plasma, would you Vader? We're all a community in here.

Basically, it all boils down to this:

We're grouping consoles by "generation". But these "generations" aren't really clearly defined. So it makes sense to some and none to others.

Vader
16 Feb 2009, 15:11
Hey, I was just gabbin' about videogaming in general. I know why people group the consoles in generations, I was just pointing out something I had observed. If Plasma wants to get shirty about it all (and he did as is clear from his tone) then shirty we shall get. I tend not to keep my gloves on for long.

Yakuza, I don't see the point in what you've just said.

So, what do you all think of ThatGameCompany's new addition, fl0wer? (It's on PSN by the way).

It's an interesting concept, steering petals by the power of the wind. Game looks beautiful, it really is amazingly pretty. I feel that there isn't much actual gameplay as such though... seems to lack meat as it were.

Vader
16 Feb 2009, 18:10
I think that's in this month's Edge - I read about it and it sounds like there is actually quite a significant gameplay element; you have to gather certain amounts of certain blossom to progress and expand the playing area, or seomthing.

Okay, special people, here is the literal version:

I used sarcasm to parody the people who are questioning the theory that "console generations is an abstract term not supported by launch dates" with no logical argument whatsoever other than, dood magazines use the term it must be correct - ignoring all reasonable counter argument (see: Plasma, robowormer)

Plasma
16 Feb 2009, 19:00
See, I'd agree with you there if we were talking about relatively minor consoles. But we're not, we're talking about major consoles. And it's very clearly defined what generations they're from:
If it's from a series, it's the generation after the previous one. Can't argue there, it's the definition of the word.
If it's a new console, then it gets grouped in the generation that matches it's power and release date the most. Which is also as obvious.

I honestly don't know what's hard to understand about that.

Vader
16 Feb 2009, 20:29
Microsoft have released their 2nd generation of consoles, Sony their 3rd, Nintendo their 5th. We're currently in the "7th generation of videogaming".

Do you see how the numbers don't really correlate? That's my observation; the generations are hazy and vague, so much so that I felt it was worth commenting on when your post reminded me of my observation.

I honestly don't know what's hard to understand about that.

Sonic Unleashed would have been great if it was just all day stages. The day stages were great, the night stages were boring.

@ Vader: I think I see your point.
You're saying because these new consoles don't release the next wave in set periods of time, it can't really be considered a generation, as then they would be coming out more regularly, right? Like within 2-3 years or something as a regular.
These new consoles just come out whenever they're perfected, whether that be 2 to 10 years [exaggeration].

"This is a Sonic game! I refuse to review it as a stand-alone game!"

That's fair. I doubt any of the FIFA/PES games are reviewed as stand-alone games and let's face it, the new Sonic games are all the same. It's a 3D environment, you run, jump and attack, each one introduces a new Sonic redesign who happens to be your enemy, your partner or your playable character, and they all try and extend the reach of the Sonic franchise ever so slightly without breaking the mould.

Utter gash. Sonic Rush was good on DS but that's the only good Sonic game since the Mega Drive.

Then it is surely inferior and shall not be considered Mega Man X.

Similarly, the PS2 collection sucks because the music doesn't loop properly. It fades out and in again at the end and start of the track. However, it's pretty cool not having to use codes to resume your game (your progress is saved to Memory Card).

Bear in mind that there's been a HoW2 on the cards for at least a year and yet there's very little information on the web about it. For such a small amount of press release, a release date of April 1st seems dubious to me, not only because it'd be April Fool's Day but also because it's in a week's time (although according to this document (http://corporate.infogrames.com/MT-3.34-en/mt-static/FCKeditor/UserFiles/File/CA_Q3_FY07_08EUR_FINAL.pdf) Atari's fiscal year does start in April).

Also, it's not coming out on 360 or PS3. Final.

there's very little information on the web about it.
That there isn't. All the info there is is that one planned lineup. And considering that's three months old and not publicised yet, I'd say there's another one or two months of waiting before it actually comes out.

The bit where it says "The game is scheduled for release this fiscal year (ending 2009-04-1)". That means the latest it is planned for release is April 1st 2009.

Also, more topically, the Wii has The House of the Dead: Overkill which is quite simply brilliant. Actually, the Wii has quite a few really good games, IMHO.

Yes, at the time of writing a potential difference of 7 whole days.

I never said it was going to be released on any date. What I said was that a deadline of April 1st seems suspicious. Plus, given the quantity of press releases, it stands to reason that the game would come out in 7 days rather than, say, 4.

What I also said was that it didn't seem that suspicious considering Atari's fiscal year does actually end on April 1st.

I think the idea of driving a train about is interesting. The boat mechanic in PH was great because you had so much freedom; the train's tracks restrict you to certain routes through the world.

I think some bits do look really cool, though. I'm happy to see the windy boomerang make a return and it appears you can summon and control a phantom, which from what I recall is a Zelda first.

Best of all Zelda is back. Tetra just didn't cut it for me.

My post didn't post :( anyways, land gives you more variety then the ocean. Like you can have rocks, trees, grass, elevations, ditches, walls, fences, buildings, caves etc. etc. where as the ocean you have water water everywhere (so lets all have a drink...)

the most interesting landscapes in WW were the dungeons and the main islands (like the town and the hero's home)

Vader
27 Mar 2009, 09:30
Well, in the ocean in PH you had rocks, plant-fences you could shoot or jump over, obstacles such as whirlwinds, barrels of explosives, walls in the form of island coasts, plus the awesome fishing and salvage mini-games. You also weren't bound to the sea, it was just a means of getting from one place to another, so you still had all the usual land-based features such as rocks, trees, etc.

I know what you're saying though. I just like having the contrast between the two environments.

franpa
27 Mar 2009, 11:53
There is only 1 whirlwind I would consider an obstacle in Wind Waker and that whirl wind disappears after completing a certain task :/ the rest are very minor annoyances that are incredibly easy to avoid and don't really prent you from reaching your location... theres also not much of an abundance of them, mostly you encounter weird flying things on the ocean, battle ships or octopuses :/

Vader
27 Mar 2009, 12:15
I suspect the train journeys will be quite similar. You're not likely to get regular occurrences of tracks coming to a massive, impenetrable wall, are you? And the rest of the journey will mostly be: select route > blow horn to move animals off the track > shoot cannon at enemies. This can be compared quite closely to the boat: select a route > cast off to catch fish in the sea > shoot cannon at enemies.

Anyway, I've not played WW so I can't comment. I was talking about PH and there are a handful of whirlwinds (final island, mini ones in the sea), walls (island coasts, the ice island) and obstacles (barrels, rocks, enemies). Sure they're not hard to overcome but since when are Zelda games about hardcore gaming? I don't expect a whirlwind to take a 35-hit hyper-combo only possible with split-second reactions and focus. I expect an obstacle to require following a pattern, a few hits in a weak spot, the be triggered by an event (such as aquiring a necklace) or to be cirumnavigable.

Zelda games are easy, fun, and beautifully crafted. They are not God of War on the hardest setting.

Plasma
27 Mar 2009, 15:26
Phantom Hourglass's 'obstacle course oceans' was inspired by the distinct boringness of Wind Waker's plain, simple oceans. More specifically, how travelling the simple oceans were widely regarded as the most boring thing in all of Wind Waker. It really was just a case of 'choose destination > hold down thumbstick in forward position > wait lots'.

Vader
27 Mar 2009, 15:36
And, by extension, ST's train journeys will likely be a refined version of PH's sailing voyages. I just hope there's enough fun on the tracks; some of PH's finest moments were at sea, in my opinion. I'd be a shame to sacrifice some of that fun to make way for fun with summoned phantoms.

In a handheld console sort of way, I suppose it does. It's really not that far removed from any Zelda game, though, in that you enter a dungeon, you are ill-equipped to complete it, you find a treasure chest with an item in which allows you passage through said dungeon, and then you kill the boss of that dungeon with said item.

Classic Zelda, right?

franpa

Vader
28 Mar 2009, 13:47
I don't have a problem with the current trend. Just because a sign tells you you have to hit an arrow in a particular place doesn't mean it's any easier to do, for example. Furthermore, if a game is fun, then it's good. People derive fun from different things, for some it might be beating Dead or Alive in tag team mode on the hardest setting, or trimming microseconds off a lap time in Gran Turismo. For others it will be following a story and getting lost in the world thereof. Pleasure spans many disciplines!

I think it's good that games are more accessible these days. The user-base is growing and that expansion can only lead to bigger and better things. There is a lower proportion WWII games than it used to and that has to be a good thing... even if the solute is Barney's Wax Crayon Adventure Through Easter Fun Happy and Braaaaiiiiiins Training.

I'm with Vader on this one*, just because games are getting easier doesn't mean they're becoming less fun. I mean, sure, a new Nintendo Hard game now and again is worth picking up, but for regular games I amn't fond at all of getting stuck for long periods on certain parts!

Also, there's been a new WiiMenu update. This time (v4.0) it has the ability to play games and channels straight off the SD Card, meaning you don't have to keep copying games over to the HDD every time you want to play something different. A much needed feature, considering I filled my Wii memory several games ago.

Also also, the DSi is nearly out! The two big features I'm fond of is the SD Card support (which means backing up and downloading savefiles, and for games like Pokemon, modifying them [which means you're able to use pokemon caught in Gen1, 2, and console games if you wrote down the stats]) and the DSi Shop; which at the moment is somewhat empty with the exception of WarioWare: Snapped. I wonder if a Virtual Console for handheld games will be introduced to it...

Right guys, dilemma time! I've finally decided that, since I want to get a DSi in the Summer, I've decided it'd be better to buy a 4th Gen Pokemon game now since I can still play it with my mother's DS.
Now Pokemon Platinum doesn't come out for fourty days here. But I'm still playing through Red and Battle Revolution, I'm only about half-way through both of those (and I want to beat PBR normally before using custom teams). Soo....
Is it worth waiting and getting Platinum, or would I be better getting Diamond now, if they're both the same price? And if so (I'd be inclined to say 'yes', as I still have a Red to finish), what about when you consider prices; about how much more (in percentage) would it be worth playing for Platinum?
Or would I be better off altogether with buying both of them?

Hmm... I'd go for... the cheeseburger. Definitely the cheeseburger.

Mmmm, cheeseburgers.....

Anyway Plasma, hopefully you can decide from this:

Similar to Diamond and Pearl, you receive one of three starter Pokemon (Chimchar, Turtwig and Piplup) and once again explore the Sinnoh region and capture wild Pokemon. The goal here is to raise your pocket monsters and defeat other trainers in battle. In typical Pokemon sequel fashion, Nintendo slapped a new monster on the box. In this case, it's Giratina, a giant caterpillar/ghost/dragon that makes a grand entrance. Of course, there's 210 Pokemon to start with and the ability to upload ones from Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, Leaf Green and Fire Red games. In addition, there are new critters running about, including Cut Rotom, which is a strange lawnmower-like creature.

Platinum also features improved animations (even the trainers move during battles), better graphics and a new winter theme. There's even a new area to explore called Torn World, an upside down environment with gravity-defying effects.

In addition, the game features a Pokemon Emerald-inspired Battle Frontier, a facility that contains different challenges and tournaments. You'll also square off against rival trainers and the Elite Four.

Another cool feature is the ability to save Frontier and Wi-Fi battles via the Battle Recorder, which lets you preserve your greatest victories. Visiting the game's Global Trade Center enables you to access it and check out other people's battles. Since Nintendo categorizes the videos based on popularity, locating the best stuff should be easy.

As expected, Pokemon Platinum has online play, and as expected, there is no random matchmaking for battles. Instead, you must rely on those annoying friend codes. We suppose you could access the Wi-Fi Club to get your fix. It has three minigames that let you pop balloons with Wobbuffet, test your balancing skills with Mime Jr. and feed cherries to a presumably hungry Swalot, but none of these look as addictive as traditional trainer versus trainer combat.

My best bet would be to look at what Pokemon are rare to your version only, in Platinum's case these are ONLY catchable in this very version (4th gen):
Tangela (Tangrowth), Articuno, Zapdos, Moltres, Tropius, Regirock, Regice and Registeel. A bonus is that BOTH Palkia and Dialga are catchable.

These are the ones only in Diamond:
Seel (Dewgong), Scyther (Scizor), Murkrow (Honchkrow), Larvitar (Pupitar and Tyranitar), Poochyena (Mightyena), Aron (Lairon and Aggron), Kecleon, Cranidos (Rampardos), Stunky (Skuntank), legendary is Dialga.

I'm not caring so much about the exclusive Pokemon very much. Or at all, with the exception of Palkia (I already have the legendary birds from the Gamecube game). Anyway, I don't think the three Regis are obtainable without having Regigigas.

Wait, Poochyena isn't in Platinum?

No, it is. I think that Diamond-only list is for pokemon in Diamond/Pearl, not for Platinum too.

Sorry, the list was a bit outdated it seems :P Poocheyna is indeed catchable in Platinum with the Pokeradar.

*A reason to get Platinum is probably all the extras it got, like upgraded graphics both in the world and the pokemons themselves (and their trainers).
Upgraded online battles (20 people should be able to be in the same room)
Pokemon battles can be recorded somehow. Battle Frontier is represented too.
If training to higher levels is something you want to look at, the Pokemon League should now be harder, on the second run, after winning the first run, the Elite Four's Pokemon will be higher leveled.

In the long run, it is your decision. It's a decent upgraded version you will get, but that will meen you will have to wait for the release.

The bonus system from transmogrifies in Disgaea is based on 2 things:
1- the amount of levels 'stored' on that character
2- the stats of that character before he transmogrifies (without eq)

The stats unlock 'yellow bars', which increase the base stats permanently (and thus the increase per level too).
The stored levels unlock more bonus points, that you can add over the yellow bars for even more stats (and increase per level).

Yellow bar bonuses are capped at 40 for genius transmogrifies.
You need around 1.2M HP to get 40 YBB in HP, and ~300K to get 40YBB in other stats [that means around 70 for the base stats].

For bonus points, you need 185,000 stored levels to get the max of 200. To gather these the most efficient method is to transmogrify around ~800 and repeat (the late levels take too much exp to be worth it). And yes, it's not linear. You get 50 BP at 12K levels stored, 100 BP at 37K, and so on.
It takes about 20 hours to get all 185K levels on a unit tweaked for max efficiency: i.e. any unit that can target the 3x3 square formation in CoO3.
You can also try BoE, trickier and you need to be strong to pull it at low levels.

Transmogrifying into genius gives 10 more BPs.

Maxes are 40YBB per stat plus 210 BPs. Have fun. ^^
If you were gonna go for max character stats, here's a starting point lol.

Ocarina of Time I walked away from in awe. TP I just walked away satisfied. It has been ages since I last played OoT, I recently downloaded it for my Wii but don't have an appropriate TV that can properly handle a video source that operates at a low FPS. N64 games usually don't run at a consistent 25 or 30 FPS (PAL/NTSC) which is what new TVs work best with.

Is there a VGA adapter for the Wii? I could try hooking it up to my CRT monitor lol.

If you were gonna go for max character stats, here's a starting point lol.

I've been playing Zelda: Twilight Princess, over 60 hours spent on it so far, most of which was playing the computer or watching normal TV instead >_< I'm up to Twilight Palace?

I tend to transmigrate as soon as the next higher class becomes available. I think you need to get certain classes up to certain levels to unlock new classes (I unlocked Ronin last night) but I'm not sure whether I want to look up the specifics just yet as I can do all that sort of thing on the second playthrough.

As for Zelda, I finished the big bug boss guy and am between that and the Zora Temple, I think. It's ages since I played it, though. I think I preferred Phantom Hourglass but don't quote me on that.

Yesterday I bought Flower. It's a lovely game but I can see it being a bit shorter than I'd hoped. Still, it's good fun just swooshing about in the grass and no other game has made me feel so much like I'm controlling a long dragon made of petals. It's great stuff. :)

I did manage - after much cursing - to beat Cut Man, Bomb Man and Elec Man. It's just that all the other stages either seem a bit too full of moving platforms over bottomless pits (Guts and Ice) or I don't have the robot master's weakness (Fire). Even having the Magnet Beam isn't helping much.

In MM2, I've beaten Flash Man and Metal Man. But again, the suggested robot masters to visit next have all sorts of annoying things: Quick Man's lasers, and Bubble Man's spikes.

What I'd love to see though is Super Famicom Wars in the next Hanabi Festival buuuut it doesn't look like it.

I'd recommend just about all of the main series Mario games; Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past, Ocarina of Time, and Majora's Mask; Super Metroid (which I still have to get myself, actually); Donkey Kong Country and its sequel; Paper Mario and Super Mario RPG; R-Type for the nostalga element; Golden Axe for the other nostalga element... and that's all I can think of at the moment.
For WiiWare, I still recommend the StrongBadsCoolGame4AttractivePeople series, although you're better off getting them on PC if you can. I preferred the later ones to the earlier ones. And if you're as much a Pokemaniac as I am, get MyPokemonRanch.

Then again, I also got Mega Man 1 and 2, so in some ways I'm just a glutton for punishment.
I love the way you skipped over the fact that you then got MegaMan9. You really aren't good at learning lessons.

Speaking of which, I... don't really recommend MegaMan9 to anyone who both actually use the VirtualConsole and haven't played the first few games to death. The whole nostalga element is rather lost if you still do play old games.

Well personally I never got into making levels, but still I'd say the story doesnt really get any more involved so just dip into it when you fancy and go for the level editing. Only real benefit to the story mode is that it gives you lots of items to work with in the editor (I think?)

It's worth it; you'll have far more assets and materials to work with if you do story mode first. Pretty much all the music tracks are found in Story mode as well, so your level would be bland and soundless if you didn't. :(

Cool. I did some level editing yesterday mainly to see how things worked (I've dabbled on it before but not so extensively) and I have to say, doing so makes the homemade levels even more impressive. I'm not sure I can compete...

I'm a bit miffed that you have to buy DLC to get some of the trophies, though. Why should those trophies even appear unless you have the DLC? It's a bit evil, if you ask me.

Oh, and how the hell do people score tens of millions in a single Story Mode level? Am I misunderstanding the UI or something? It seems when I play a level it shows me the top scoring player (their scores seems to circle yours in the top left of the screen). I can't see how it's possible without cheating.

You're looking at it the wrong way: they didn't refraim from adding trophies so they could put it in DLC, they just only decided to add trophies after the game was published.
Unless you mean why they left it until DLC instead of including in a patch. Unfortunately, not all companies are like Valve, or in a smaller sense Maxis.

this is another reason I advocate Fallen Empire: Legions. it's a free browser game, so it's got quite the large community of people who know ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about the tribes games and who, therefore, can't play to save their lives. assuming you're intelligent enough to bother learning the controls you'll already have an advantage against at least a couple people per server :p

I only ever played the Worms 4 demo. It was significantly more fun than W3D, in my opinion.
Just about everyone says that. I just want W3D for:
1: the singleplayer missions
2: the variety
3: the maps
4: as a collection game

I doubt my PC would run either, though. :(

Your PC is worse than a PS2?

It's bigger, louder, smellier, uglier and slower.

My PC has a GeForce2. It might work, I guess. Not that I'll be finding out any time soon.

In light of the fact that I am switching internet providers I have been downloading a load of PS3 demos to fill the gap the Internet usually occupies.

So far I have got Skate, Everybody's Golf, the new Wolverine game thing, um... a couple of others... I also borrowed Drake's Fortune off a friend so I'll be playing through that a bit.

Which demos do you, the worming public, recommend I download?

Wow. 5 months ago I liked 3D, now I really don't like it all.

It must be the repetitive playing of WA/WWP.

I just got the new Wolverine game for my 360. It's not the best game ever but damnit isn't it awesome anyway.

You should try the Ratchet and Clank demo. And the Killzone 2 demo. PixelJunk Eden might be worth a try too. There's also Motorstorm, Mirror's Edge, FEAR 2... The inFamous demo comes out on may 21st... oh, Marvel vs Capcom 2 demo is out apparently...

Those are the demos I would be downloading had I a PS3... :p

Except for FEAR 2 and Mirror's Edge.... I already tried them on the 360. I probably won't buy FEAR 2, but I want to get Mirror's Edge at some point. Maybe when I'm done with Wolverine.

But...why?

Why remake them?
Several reasons.

If you want a reason that isn't "updating is good and you sound like a crotchety old man for rejecting it", then one reason is that a lot of the original cartridges have already ran out of internal battery, thanks to the always-active clock, and those batteries can't be replaced, making them unable to save.

I might be tempted by Killzone 2, actually. Not my sort of game but I reckon it could kill an hour or two. I already got Mirror's Edge but I'm yet to try it. I have to say I was impressed with the Skate demo and it makes me want Skate 2 a lot but I also really enjoyed the Tony Hawk's Proving Ground demo because I always loved the THPS games.

I also downloaded Valkyria Chronicles demo... it looks like the sort of thing I'd enjoy and it also looks like it's done in coloured pencils. Hot.

It still works on Windows Vista but only if you run it in Windows XP compatibility mode.

I still play it every now and then myself to try and perfect my lap times arround every track, I've recently started writing them down.
I've also beaten all of the Time Trials and unlocked Veronica Voltage's car.

If you ever start playing it again and fancy some challenges, PM me and i'll send you some of my best lap times for some of the tracks for you to try and beat.

Excite Truck* and Wario Land: The Shake Dimension were both awesome games, although Excite Truck doesn't count in terms of "this year".

Unfortunately no-one seems to really notice them that much because they aren't AAA games or whatever nonsense people go on about.

* that reminds me... Excitebots... annoyingly Wikipedia is just saying "2009" for a UK release date.

Yeah the only Wii games that get acclaimed are ye olde Nintendo series. If they made a new Kirby people would be all over it. What about Excite Truck, Zack & Wiki, Pangya, Boom Blox, Okami, Geometry Wars, FaceBreaker, Resident Evil, ...?

there are a few Wii games worth having, but with the system having so little power and its competitors all moving towards motion sensing, the wii offers absolutely nothing to gamers. it's likely it'll be owned by everyone on the planet along the lines of the DS, but, as with those same DSs, it won't be used as a gaming device by most of those people.

I don't regret owning the wii, but I definitely wouldn't buy one now if I didn't own it already.

People do not use DS's as gaming devices? Are you out of your mind? The DS is a gaming device. Everybody who owns it plays games on it. Even the DSi, which can potentially be used for something else, currently has no apps to make it good for anything else, and it's hardly a good camera/mp3 player. I doubt anyone really uses those features often.

Anyway, I think the reason games based on classic Nintendo franchises get so acclaimed is because that's what most people grew up with. So it has a special place above all other new franchises. But I honestly do not mind that being the only reason I got a Wii. I'll always be getting the new Mario/Zelda games, even if it's more of the same.

Shadowmoon
13 May 2009, 07:55
My sister got the DSi and i've tried it, you can distort your face when taking pictures, which is pretty interesting, but the other things you can do with photos is pretty crappy imo.

Its also got a sound editor (it isn't much) the menu is like the PSP one, there's an internet browser and the DSi shop.

If anyone is thinking of getting a DSi when they have a lite, don't. Same if you haven't got a DS. Stick with/get the lite, its not worth losing GBA compatibility for a few added features.

I meant that a huge portion of DS owners only own it for stuff like cooking tutorials and various other sorts of non-gamer-games that are available for the thing. the "casual market" sort of people.

obviously the DS is adapted as the portable of choice by serious gamers as well, but I wasn't referring to them for the point I was making.

Plasma
13 May 2009, 11:09
The DSi isn't designed to be a whole new handheld, its only meant to be the latest model of the current one. People keep on forgetting that (ESPECIALLY when they keep saying "what if it's DSi-exclusive"!). Its usually not a good idea to get two of the same console/handheld, even if one has notably different features.
As for me, I'd much rather a DSi over a DS. The DSi store, SD Card support, and internet bowser have much more of an appeal than GBA compatibility. Especially when GBAs are only €20.

And for what its worth, I still think the Wii has plenty of brilliant games.

http://wii.ign.com/articles/980/980920p1.html
Discuss. Do you think the wii games are good? do you have much fun with the wii, except from playing the glorious nintendo classics?
Blah blah; Wii doesn't appeal enough to the hardcore market to sell; too little third party support; Wii Music is really a gimmick - seriously, if they didn't have a date on this, I would've thought it was written ages ago!
If you ask me, the article was just made to capitalise on Nintendo's current slow period by repeating more of the same Stock Analysis.

What about Excite Truck, Zack & Wiki, Okami, Resident Evil, ...?
You think those games have gone mostly unnoticed? Hah!

as with those same DSs, it won't be used as a gaming device by most of those people.
A rather large misconception. Those cooking tutorial ones, and a minute few others, are the only ones that aren't games. Ones like the Brain Training games are distinctly games, and distinctly fun.

Vader
13 May 2009, 11:48
We own at least 4 'non-games' for our DSes.

Also, as I keep saying, The House of the Dead: Overkill is brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. Although maybe some of you aren't old enough for it yet.

Oh. That means there are fun games not aimed at kids. :)
