Here is the weird issue I am having.....when I create or join a room, it asks which team I would like to use. I pick a custom team that I created. But once I am in the room, it uses the team name of "Rebels" or "Marines". Once the game starts, my custom worm names are the correct ones from my custom team. After the match, I went to look at the teams that I have created and the ones that came by default. There is a team name called "Marines" but not one called "Rebels". Has anyone else encountered this? I joined a match with a friend and his team name was clearly displayed but mine was still incorrect. I have checked to make sure that I changed the name of my team and it is there. When I play challenges I select my custom team name. Very Strange......

Rebels is an opposing AI team that you encounter in the challenges.
And yeah, marines is a standard player team...

I haven't checked MP yet, but i'll post if I find something out.

Actually Rebels is the name teams are given if the customised name is deamed to be rude or offensive by MSs Verification process. Equally worm names like Terrible, Naughty, Unpleasent and Immoral will be given to offensive worm names. Note the names are deemed by Xbox Live as offensive not Team17. If you don't reguard them as offensive maybe it's a bug ;(

Is there currently a name filter as I am having problems with "worm 1" I named it "Engineer" but it shows up as "Naughty" on live. Is this a filter blocking it? The other three worms are just fine.

Yes. (http://forum.team17.co.uk/showthread.php?p=564493#post564493)

No idea why that would be filtered. Maybe Microsoft don't like gin.

Well the team name that does not show up is "Screwballs". Maybe the "balls" portion of the name is whats causing it. So if I were to change the name it would show up correctly? That is weird but I guess I understand. Its just a weird idea to change the name entirely if they deem it "offensive" or whatever....

oh well, I guess I will experiment with changing it. Thanks for the help Lebowski.

One of my friend's Worms called Jesus was chaned to Unplesant. Ironically Buddha, Allah and Ganesh were all allowed :D

it seems to check for anagrams, or do a search similar to one that spell checker does, so it can be triggered by rather unpredictable words.

Ya thats why its filtered. Look at the letters in the name you made and it has the key ingredients to a naughty word when the letters switched around.

try replacing "Colonel Cow" with "Captain Cow". basically the same rank, and my guess is that it doesn't like "colon" in "colonel". similarly, for the other one, replace "BrigGen" with something else.

All I see is Engineer -> Niger (nee is left over), which is an obvious misspelling of something else, and a country in Africa, lol. Maybe I'm just wrong and it's something else, but that's what I put together in the few seconds I saw it.

And meanwhile Satan is Naughty, but Lucifer. Beelzebub, Hades, and Mephisto are all good.

And also on topic, one team I encountered yesterday had the names Naughty, YOUR, COUCH, and Terrible.

I don't know if this has been a topic already, but i find it very strange that some worm names are being censored in the worms online multiplayer mode.

Last night was my first online worm experience (sounds kind of sexy when i write it like that) but i was very dissapointed that my drugs based team was censured. Names like "crack"are not alowed, and i wonder why?

Half the fun of worms is thinking of funny names for your worms.. i am actually really dissapointed that Team17 (or more likely microsoft) decided to
spend Mb's into censoreship insted of gameplay.

I really hope this will be fixed.

yeah its MS unfortunately, and their censorship is along the same lines as hitler burning books. i can understand reason for censorship but some words it deems as 'naughty' are rediculous.

for instance, i imagine that from this post about 4 words would be censored lol

Then let me. MS is a corporation, not a government. It’s an option, not a requirement. It is stupid though, and quite hypocritical to give everyone headsets, but force censorship with text. The things I’ve heard said in a heated games of Halo 2 put any “naughty” worm names to shame.

But you can turn off the voice. I personally have no desire to hear that kind of stuff, so I don't use a headset and have the Live Voice muted.

I thought "swearwords as part of words" (T17F-style) was bad enough.

But ANAGRAMS? That's going too far. Practically anything will give you a subset of letters that could be taken as offensive. Paul.Power contains the letters to build "oral", not an offensive word in itself, but a word filter as paranoid as one that checks for anagrams would probably pick it up. Are they expecting hordes of wormers to name their worms after French Connection UK*, or something?

I'm not going to say anything like "ooh, this is how the Nazis behaved", because that would indeed be stupid. And therefore hypocritical, because that's what I feel this is: stupid. Not evil, or repressive, just stupid.

Credit to Team17 for making light of it with an inspired selection of replacement words, however. This isn't your fault, after all.

I've had more then afew odd words 'censored'. My first team I made was the 501st Legion. The word Legion caused my team name to be censored, then I tried 'Da Greenskins' (any Warhammer fan knows what this is), this was censored also. Now your thinking to yourself... "Well it's got to be greenskins, probably thinks your being racist or something." Well now, I took 'Da' and in place of it put in 'The'... and now it works ><

Honest to god the words that MS feels the need to censor is just beyond any sane form of thought.

I'd be rather frustrated if my name was Jesus and it got censored! Do words get censored like this when you chat too? If they do, it must be hard to hold a conversation, and Microsoft would be creating a whole new generation of illiterate people. :p

I imagine they are also rather fistful about not allowing the word "anal".

I created a team called "The Matrix" with worm names such as (the obvious): Neo, Morpheus, and Ghost.

But when I named one of the worms "Trinity" and joined an online Xbox Live match, the name changed to "Unpleasant".

I don't see how "Trinity" is an inappropriate word.

Anyway...
For now I've changed the name to "Seraph" (the one that guards The Oracle).

Having actually worked somewhere where we had to create the same kind of "foul words filter" for a publicly-accessible service, I think I can enlighten you as to why some of these things are filtered.

First off, most developers don't give a rat's ass about this kind of thing. The need for these filters gets passed down from legal departments and other suit jockeys in an organisation.

Generally you start out by brainstorming a list of obviously foul words and put it in place. Next, people start defeating your filters by misspelling things with numbers or symbols like "sh1t", etc. At that point you start using regular expressions or some other pattern matching strategy to filter out those misspellings, which results in things like "engineer" being seen as a misspelling of "n**ger". (yes, I'll join the club and not actually spell that out)

At that point, you're pretty happy with your filters and they are getting the job done. From there on out, you make small additions here and there as other suit jockeys send them in -- hence things like Satan being filtered, but not all the other variations mentioned. You probably laugh with your co-workers about all the inconsistencies in the things that the suit jockeys send you, but that's all just part of the territory.

Of course nothing like this happens at Team 17, tho, right? ;-)

The fact is that though none of you seem to be offended by these (and frankly, neither am I for the most part), this is a children's game, too. I wouldn't want my 10 year old playing against "Sh1t Faced Pole Smoker".

I strongly believe that this is a great feature. Remember, just because you don't know why a word is offensive (Trinity would be a good example) doesn't mean that it isn't still offensive to many people.

Additionally, first-world countries are very liberal and lax. Certain ordinary words could easily cause extraordinarily bad consequences in other parts of the world. And the 'So Don't Play' argument doesn't fly here because a person's ability to enjoy a game like Worms shouldn't have to coincide with their tolerance for poor adolescent humor.

AndrewTaylor
28 Apr 2007, 10:22
This is true. It would seem polite, though, to allow adults to see the poor adolescent humour if they wanted to, rather than making a blanket ruling for everyone.

I don't like to see that kind of censorship forced on people, partly because it leads people to believe that certain words or phrases are somehow intrinsically offensive when in fact they're just oversensitive, and that's the kind of mindset that leads to embassies being bombed whenever someone draws a cartoon they don't like, but mostly because the censorship doesn't work properly and clearly annoys a lot of people by restricting, quite arbitrarily, the perfectly innocent content they try to use.

For the sake of sticking a parental control option panel into the console I think it would have been well worth the effort. Especially since there are plenty of freely available Xbox360 games with far worse things than obscene language in them.
