Here we go again.

As the Forum Comic Craze has aparantly returned to the forum we might as well have a comic themed contest this month.

Rules:

Rule the first: thy entry shall be in comic format, be it single panel or graphic novel.

Rule the second: Thy entry must be Team17 related (no eye-on-legs or human forum members, you pillocks)

rule the third: The inclusion of a sigworm (be it thine or otherwise) will result in instant disqualification. Original characters only please.

Rule the fourth: Have fun!

rule the third: The inclusion of a sigworm (be it thine or otherwise) will result in instant disqualification. Original characters only please.

Of course, that rule automatically disqualifies every comic currently running. Nice move on stopping 13+ automatic entries.

I think I'll enter this one. At least with comics people might not judge my entry solely upon my rubbish drawing skills.

What a good idea! I'm greatly in favour of this as 99% of the entries will be recently drawn/original.:D

Hmm, is this just one comic? Because it's rather misleading when you said 'graphic novel'.

...is Akuryou, with his dinky little sprite people.

You can enter as many pages as you want.

Conversely you can also enter a single panel comic.

There is no size limit at all.:)

Is it just me, or is this the closest we've ever gotten to proper grammar and spelling in an "Unofficial Fanartist of the Month Thread"? If it is, I might take it seriously.

Philby never stated a size limit, and he never stated the image has to be hosted on the forum, therefore, your joke doesn't work.

Planet P!ss.
Way to take the motivation out of finishing the comic I just started. :p

Ah, well. I can just put it in my shiny new thread, instead.
And I'll have to think of something else for this. I may actually have a chance at winning for once, seeing as you're out of the running. :p

I may or I may not enter this month. it depends on whether or not the image I'm currently doing is finished in time to start another one in comic-format :p

Comic contest eh? Well that would of gave me an excuse to finish the Zero the Hero comic I started. Oh well. I miiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight do this one. Maybe use a bit of "A" material too, rather than the "C-" stuff I've got in my so called forum comic. :p

No sigworms, just to point out the obvious. :p

I'll probably enter this one, a single, gigantic panel, full of flying vehicles, lasers, robots, and one punchline. I hope I can get both the art and joke decent. :p

It's clear that it wasn't a trace, as some lines are all woojity on his drawing.
Which means that he copied it by sight, which is rather impressive.

Of course, it isn't a comic, so it doesn't matter.

WRONG. Copying by sight is stupidly easy too for some people(including me), the fact that he can do it is not impressive because it's probably not a skill he got trough hard work. I'll be impressed when he can come up with his own pose and expresions and pull it off right.

Pigbuster
12 Mar 2007, 04:40
Err...
You know... "copying by sight" is more or less what is done by people who do model drawing... or still lifes... or a lot of actual REAL art.

Granted, it's not quite the same, as drawing from life can help you with tones and shadows that a picture can't quite provide, but...
What if he had an exact, real life sculpture of that "worm w/ gun" picture? What if he drew the sculpture sitting on his table with real shadows and stuff? It would look more or less the same, so is it still unimpressive?

MtlAngelus
12 Mar 2007, 05:00
Yes, unimpressive.
I would think drawing still life is more or less something you do so you can get a hang on human anatomy so that you can sort of predict shadows and anatomy when creating a drawing from scratch, rather than being a skill.
Drawing something that is in front of you is hardly skilled, drawing something that came out of your brain, and doing it right, is an entirely different thing.
edit: Also there's a whole huge difference between copying by sight another drawing/image, and copying by sight an actual object, but I still think both are unimpressive.

Pigbuster
12 Mar 2007, 05:17
I actually think drawing from imagination is more impressive, too, but I think that most of the art communities/schools disagree with me. :)

Reference drawing is damn important, though. It's wonderful for learning things. I drew 5+ llamas over at the state fair one day and now I can draw llamas quite well.
Drawing from reference really helps someone become a better artist.
Even if you want to draw some weird, fantastical creature, a knowledge of anatomy can help you make something even weirder than if you didn't have that knowledge.

MtlAngelus
12 Mar 2007, 06:12
Yes I know, it's a great thing and really helpfull, but being able to do it is not impressive. :p

Gardy Looo
12 Mar 2007, 11:58
Back on topic, or not, since I'm not important enough. :p

I decided not to do the giant comic with lasers and stuff, a bit too hard for me to do. So I might make a minimalistic comic solely depending on humour, or a detailed one depending more on art than humour.

Maybe I'll back off for this month. :p

Melon
13 Mar 2007, 18:29
Hmmmmm.... I've got a great idea for a comic now, but I'm wondering if Im going to have the time, seeing as I'm going to America before the end of the month.

Seeing as this is technically an art compo, would it matter if the drawing wasn't superb provided the comic itself was a good entertaining comic? Could it still win? I'll still try to draw it as well as I can obviously...

Also, does it HAVE to be funny? You've said graphic novel, so can we just tell a story?

Or does nothing really matter and people can vote how they like?

Anyway, I'd best get a move on, I've got coursework to do as well :(
Trust me to start tryng to come up with a new worm design now....

Gardy Looo
13 Mar 2007, 18:55
If you make the comic funny, I'm sure it can compensate for the art. Watch out for grammar and spelling as well.

MtlAngelus didn't say model-drawings sucked, he said they were unimpressive.
Different.

philby4000
14 Mar 2007, 12:09
This discusion is stupid.

Copying a picture or drawing a real life object isn't always impresive, it depends on the complexity object and how good the resultant picture is.

Labeling something as unimpresive simply because it's a copy isn't all that clever.

However, it's true in this case because the picture in question isn't a very good copy at all.

Just in case anybody cares, there isn't a hope in hell that I'm going to finish my "wonderful" comic idea within this month. Far too much coursework. I may just have to drop out, although I hope I'll be able to come up with some idea and throw one up before I leave to America in a wee. We'll see.

Maybe I'll finish this comic at some point. It's going to be epic though, probably at least 30 pages (if I draw the panels big like I intend to).
