View Full Version : Guest players on Live?

I was wondering if there were plans to allow guests on Live matches like Gears of War, Halo, etc (sorry for the comparisons, but you know what I mean).

I don't always have 3 other friends in the house, and it'd be nice if 2 or 3 of us could go on live to play in a full 4 person match.

Thanks!

I just checked and sorry, it isn't possible. Only local battle supports multiple players on one console.

A friend and I both purchased Worms XBLA today, and we're starting to play online. We each have wifes who would like to play at the same. Is it possible to have an online match with 2 players from each Xbox? We've been trying, but so far haven't had any luck.

Yep. This is a major problem. If worms is to once again be brought to the ignorant masses, multiple players from one box must be included. This feature was implemented on Worms 3D for the original X-box. Why is it not here?

I am very hopeful that this will be addressed in an imminent patch. I live with several roommates and have the only 360; all high-school chums who enjoyed WA on the Dreamcast. I am not taking any live-enabled content for granted here, just wanting friends in the same room able to play with long-distance friends from college.

Please, Team 17, help us in our hour of need!

it's easy to understand why it's not there. it's too easy to use it to cheat. imagine, you join a game with two teams, but you actually play as both. you can team up with yourself, and effectively have double the worms than anyone else. you can kill off one of your own teams when you eliminated the opposition, and get the victory points. since the game is ranked, it will be abused, and therefore, the only way around it was not to include it as an option.

Then just don't allow it on ranked. Gears does the same thing I believe.

Allow Live guests on Player matches, but not on Ranked matches, where it counts.

Those instances are few and far between, I agree with the statement above that you could disallow it for ranked matches only. It's well worth it for everyone else (especially those of us with annoying little brothers and sisters), to allow guest sign-in for the live matches. This is exactly what killed Fuzion Frenzy 2 (among other things).

Can we please fix up the game so that two players on one 360 can go online? For instance, my girlfriend's team, and my team from our one xbox - against other people online. We both have a gold account on the one machine, so to be able to use our own gamertags would be fandabidozy.

I will give you a shiny penny, one big bag of peanuts and I'll wash your car if you make this dream come true.

Otherwise, a great game. Well done.

Make it someone else becomes the host when the original host leaves. I hate when the host leaves as that cancels the game.

You would think that since Halo allowed it back in 2001 a game that comes out 6 years later would allow it. Why the Halo 2 party system isn't mandatory is beyond me.

They could have made it an option for player matches only, but I see their point it would have been alot of effort and may nt have been worth the dev time.

Okay, I have loved worms for many years since my first experience on the PS1 ( i think armageddon came out there) and I love this worms. I really like playing these games with my friends. But I have friends everywhere. I was really hoping to get the people in my house together with my friends online for some four player mayhem. We have two accounts here. But I can't do more than one account local in a Live game or even guests. I specifically would like to reference the way Small Arms lets you have as many local as you want with online filling in the gaps.

If you would like to see guests and multi-users on the same box in this version of Worms, please show support here.

There's no reason this should ever happen with ranked games, but there's no reason this shouldn't be an option in player match games. Let's hope it gets fixed in an update, along with limits on so weapons "do you want 0 cluter bombs, or 1", that awful PC teleports above the screen glitch, and several other issues people seem to have with the game.

I would like to also add my opinion to this I am very disappointed by this decision, not to include it, and if it was a purchase, as in physical, I would be returning it to the store simply and basically to the lack of this option. Thats how important this option is to me. Also the lack of this option would seriously make me consider not paying for any extra DLC as I would not want to pay anymore towards a game that in my opinion is missing a vital option.

Please could someone from Team17 reply on this?

To clarify, it appears that multiplayer Worms games over Xbox Live (both ranked and player) do not support more than one player from each Xbox 360. It doesn't matter whether you have paid for multiple Xbox Live Gold accounts, it is still unsupported.

This is absolutely unacceptable, and has completely ruined the game for those of us that have friends both online and offline who want to play together, just as Project Gotham Racing 3 did (dropping the 2-players-per-Xbox-over-Live that PGR2 supported).

Halo 2 supports it, Fifa 07 supports it, Gears of War supports it - and guess what, these end up being the games we enjoy playing. And we would play PGR2 over PGR3 if only it was backwards compatible.

The justification I've heard is that having guest players online would be too conducive to cheating (i.e., join an online game with two teams and you've got double the worms of everyone else).

Just wanted to add my two pence worth and say that the lack of this feature is a real pain. I am in the same position as a previous post, I have finally found a game that my mate and I can both play with our wives and we can only play one team at a time on each xbox. Surely Team 17 must have made a concious decision to ommit this feature, so I would really like to hear a comment from them on why its missing

I highly doubt they will do this. This is not an oversite... This is their game. If they wanted you to play online with multiple users on one box it would be there.

It's not dissappointing. I woudl love to play online with my wife, but in reality if I wanted to play with her I would just start a two player game. No one wants to be ganged up by 3 people on the same box in an online match.

If you want a 4 player game get some friends together and play a local game. Or better yet go get your dreamcast out and play W:A.

I would guess he is calling it lazy because well made successful games like Gears of War and Halo 2 make sure to support this feature while poorly made games like PGR3 and Fuzion Frenzy 2 choose to omit it, and suffer in sales because of it.

quakerworm
13 Mar 2007, 16:04
yeah, but "lazy" doesn't factor in here. the game already supports hotseat and network multiplayer. if the worms control is abstracted for control by human/ai/network, which it should be, supporting guest accounts would be just a matter of adding some code for the guest account xbla api, and maybe modifying the per-turn team selection algorithm slightly. so it's not them being lazy. either t17 just decided it wasn't important enough, or they thought that there was a reason not to include it. i thought it was clear that the issue of cheating was the reason, but then it was pointed out to me that there are non-ranked games where this could have been used for friendly matches, so i'm not so sure anymore.

I think it's more likely a combination of oversight/feeling of it not being required (due to local options) and the ranked/cheating opportunities. It'd mean a whole new section of interface stuff on the live/player match stuff. AFAIK it wasn't pushed for by test and right now the likelihood of it being included is quite small.

Again, people complaining constructively rather than shouting, screaming and being abusive is far more likely to achieve positive results.

Spage,

I have been disappointed on more than a few games that this feature was not implemented. The first game I bought for the xbox was Gears of War, and from that I mistakenly assumed that this was how all xbox games worked. I never did imagine that my wife would even want to play most of the games for the xbox, but she has become as avid a gamer as I am if not more so. I'm not sure how many husband/wife, boyfriend/girlfriend, brother/sister, etc users there are out there but we have played against quite a few in gears. It's unfortunate to find out that the one feature that I didn't buy the xbox for, but that I now regard as a key feature, does not really exist.

Thank you for listening, and taking the time to address this issue. (even if it doesn't get changed)

I'm actually kind of glad this feature's not in there to be honest. There's no team options in the game, and if you guys have played Halo2 at all, I'm sure you can picture a pair of obnoxious teenyboppers giggling and cursing the whole time as they team up to kill the other two teams. Obviously this can happen with two people over XBL also, but somehow I can just see it being more prevalent with people sitting next to each other.
I've already seen the immaturity of a few people after losing (or even winning) Worms games online, sending messages to you after.

Spage,

By no means is this oversight exclusive to Team17. There's several other examples of games (PGR3 and Fuzion Frenzy 2 among them) that, for some reason or another, won't allow more than one person per Xbox on Live.

I can understand the reasonings about cheating during ranked matches, which is why allowing guests on non-ranked matches seems like an obvious, yet often overlooked, compromise.

I'm a journalist by profession, and I've been blessed with the chance to review games for my newspaper. I've complained about the single-profile online limitations of Fuzion Frenzy 2 when I reviewed that title in February. In fact, the inability to support multiple profiles online in that game directly resulted in a lost sale when my sisters-in-law (both fans of Fuzion Frenzy) discovered they couldn't pair up online to play against my wife and I.

Such limitations also led to similar disappointment when we discovered PGR3 also lacked a multi-profile or guest feature.

It's almost as if many developers are treating Xbox Live as an "either/or" proposition. As in: EITHER the player has friends locally, OR he/she plays alone online.

There needs to be a middle ground for the multitude of gamers out there who both have friends in the house that want to play AND have friends elsewhere that want to play.

I can also understand, to some extent, the comments from those that are fine with the lack of multi-profile or guest options, citing the profane behavior witnessed online. There is no doubt a legion of Halo 2 players out there who love nothing more than to partner up with a buddy and torment other players.

But there are also millions more (myself, my wife and my sisters-in-law included) who play Halo 2 with multiple accounts because we enjoy playing against each other.

I applaud Team 17 for at least listening, and I implore you to consider adding in a feature that makes so much sense. For games like Worms and Fuzion Frenzy 2, which are far more enjoyable against humans that they are against AI, it seems unimaginable to me that there would be limits on how we could enjoy the game.

So far, my wife and sisters-in-law have gotten hooked on Worms (pun intended), but I'm bracing for their reaction when I tell them yet another multiplayer-friendly game isn't so multiplayer-friendly.

Yes, I realize that's possible, but it's more of a workaround than a solution. Plus, it defeats the purpose of having two unique Xbox Live accounts (one for me and another for my wife so that we each have a gamerscore).

Spadge,

Thanks for your honest reply. The fact that you mention "the likelihood of it being included is quite small" rather than "it won't happen" at least gives us some hope. It is a major concern that Microsoft are not pushing this as a feature which is required. As I hope you can see from this post, for many of us this feature makes the difference between worms being the most played game on our xbox 360s, or - in its current state - a game that will get played occasionally with a sadness in our hearts of what could have been. My friend and I both agreed if worms allowed multiple players over Xbox live per xbox 360, then the game would be a bargain, whereas actually it now feels overpriced.

Just to add further evidence, my friend and I were considering whether to purchase Fifa 07 or PES6. However when we found out that PES6 supports only 1 player per Xbox 360 over Xbox live then this made the purchasing decision easy - Fifa 07 wins by default. Microsoft take note...

What the hell? this was half the fun of playing on dreamcast! I got one of my college buddies at my house to play worms, the other is in a different state with live. Now we gotta take turns playing in different games? What about the whole "Jump In" nature of live? multiple live players on one console is a must have feature! I bought two live accounts on one console specifically for this. Way to further hurt the game, after removing some of my favorite weapons, and then making it impossible to connect to a match. At least let me do it in player match.

I just saw this post after posting in the suggestion thread.

I would love this. I understand the issue with rank boosting. However, make it an option not available for ranked play? Guests can't play ranked. I don't have Gears of War anymore but I recall guests not being able to play ranked.

For any turn based game this should be a must have. I wish Tiger Woods had it. if the next one doesn't I am probably not going to get it.

This is such a party game. It would be great I there wasn't limitations on how people can play together.

The only other suggestion I have is add back in the ability to switch the worm selected.

Other than those issues I love game.

Worms is a party game that does not support fundamental party features. Its like having pages 2 and 3 missing from a newspaper.

I and I suspect many others (pcarmalt for a start) would be willing to pay for a full complete version of this game for around £20. In fact, take Worms Armageddon as a reference and build from that.

I think that to say we're missing so much as a party game is a bit remiss. Sure, we're missing the ability for mulitple live accounts to play over the net, but there's social play and the ability to play in online, voice enabled stuff for the princely sum of $10/£6.80, 1/3 of the £20 you mention... so maybe it's good value for the one-page you suggest we have included? :)

It would be a nice feature to have, and it would be a shame for this to be the last utteration of a 2D Worms, that will be limited in such a manner for the rest of its life.

I've been thinking about how the interface could change the least and the best I can think of is that the extra local player(s) activates his controller and signs in to Live, then when it comes time to join a game, after the main player selects his team, the extra player is presented with the same team select screen minus the main player's selection.
On the main player hosting a game, the teams would be selected beforehand in a similar manner and would be ready in the roster upon the game's creation. Bringing a remote player with a partner in to that game would cause the extra remote player to join automatically.

There would likely be quite a bit of behind-the-scenes work involved here, however.

For £6.80 I'm not complaining though. But then I have no real-life friends or wives.

In the mean time, play as a team taking 2 worms each?

The existence of a "mean time" suggests to me some sort of response could be on the way. I'm hoping that's the case as it seems like such a natural thing to include in a game like Worms.

I'm actually here on the forums because I can't play while my wife plays. My other sister-in-law had asked if we could play two-on-two online (two sisters across town vs. my wife and I) and I had the sad duty to inform her that we could not. So instead of four people playing, it's just my wife and one sister online while I'm surfing the net and the other sister is at her apartment watching The Hills on MTV...

Hopefully, the folks at Team 17 take all this complaining as a compliment as it shows there's plenty of fans out there hoping/praying they can enjoy this fun game in as many ways as possible.

Now, about that "mean time" statement..???:)

It's the 'me and my wife' thing that's unusual to me. As I was growing up my mum thought videogames were pointless. She once threatened to throw Arcade Pool out of the window if I didn't do my homework. Now she's frightened that if I plug my 360 in to the big TV in the lounge something dangerous or damaging will happen! My brother's male. And I have minimal exposure to girls except the odd one who pops in to my shop to buy something their office or boyfriend sent them to get, that they have no clue about.

Chalk up another one (well, four actually) votes for multiple users on a box. I was so excited the day this game came out. I downloaded right away and called my brother to ensure he got it as well. I was sitting down on the couch with my wife and my brother one state away with his significant other, all ready to play. I'magine the dissapointment when we couldn't make four teams, or even have a guest on one profile.

I have played a total of one game on Live and haven't played the game in a few weeks. I really would like to see this feature added more than anything. It will get me playing (and downloading premium content!!!) again.

I would think the most likely scenario for that to happen now would be a patch in the next few weeks to fix all the bugs, and then an update some time later to put in any features like that that seem practical to implement.

Bomberman Live has shown the way, allowing guest/local players on xbox live games. Let's hope there's an update allowing this for Worms otherwise I will probably never play the game again (haven't played it for months).

The easiest way to eliminate the cheating argument is to simply allow the host to determine whether local guests can join or not.

It's also easy then to filter games as "local guest on / off", so those uninterested in playing someone with a guest don't have to.

This will naturally lend itself towards honest-players that actually have guests being able to use it, and those that are using it for cheating will simply not get played with if they host a match with those settings. It would take a bit of time, but given the few amount of games at certain times of the day, it would sort itself quickly if someone was discovered to be cheating.

That way, people that know eachother and want to setup ranked games or otherwise can do so, and those that aren't interested can simply filter the games list to not include the guest-capable games.

Or the person really wanting guest-capable action (since they have friends over) can host the game that way. With microphones, it's easy to see who is really two people and who isn't, and if they are tag-teaming in a player match, ask them to stop and if they don't, leave the game.

It simply isn't practical. Multiple players from one system online had been allowed in Worms 2/Armageddon/World Party because you could have to six players. In Worms XBLA you can only have four. Letting guests in reduces the number of people (read: systems) able to play the game, effectively reducing it to three or two.

It's a bit of a silly request, to be honest. If you want to let a friend play, then play locally. It's not rocket surgery. Worms was designed from the off to be a social game, so be social with it.

Dude, you are entitled to your opinion, but label the opions of others as "silly", especially when very strong and valid reasons for this request can be found elsewhere in these forums, is just plain ignorant. I'm not calling you ignorant btw - just your pointless flaming.

To reiterate why this would be excellent functionality - my wife and I would really enjoy being able to get into a 4 player game with my mate in Jo'burg and my other mate in Holland. We can't. Now whats so silly about that?

Firstly, it's very easy to label the opinions of others as silly. People seem to forget that having an opinion is not an immunity to being Wrong. You may hold the opinion, for example, that the Mona Lisa is not art, or that the sky is a brilliant shade of lettuce. You might hold the opinion that "Birdhouse In Your Soul" by They Might Be Giants is a song about God and not, in actual fact, a song about a Nite Lite. You'd be wrong on all counts.

In a game with a four-player cap, allowing multiple players on one machine doesn't make sense. It leaves the door open for cheating and it limits the number of people online who can join in. It works for Bomberman or Gears of War because there's an eight-player cap, not a four-player cap. Given your unique circumstances (which I can in fact relate to, having family both in Los Angeles and in England, and having been living in one place or another at various points in my life) it might be worthwhile investing in a copy of Worms Armageddon for the PC - it's only £5 now, after all, and it comes bundled with Worms 2 - and playing using that. If you want to voicechat then TeamSpeak or Ventrillo are both exceptionally good programs to use.

If Team 17 ever do decide to do a more WA-based XBLA Worms game, that player cap would go up to 6, and perhaps then they'd be more willing to allow multiple players on one system, just as they do with Worms Armageddon on the PC. As it stands at the moment, there really is no point allowing Guest players.

I would pay money to enable this feature, call it couples mode and stick in video camera support while you're at it (No swinging intended lol).

I would pay money to enable this feature,
Oh, then go ahead. If you talk to Team17, they should be able to do something about it.
Of course, that's if you're willing to pay the money. A lot, lot, lot of money! As in, a life-savings worth.
