Well, the last night i have decided to make a comic, and i have created this thread.

My little, short comic:

29323
(Sorry, i can't draw worms very well with pencil's... I am more experienced at computer drawing)

Post your worms comics here if you want.

More of my worms comics are coming soon! (I am trying to make a long one now)

Okay, let's try and be sensible about this. We've probably all been a bit too harsh to the guy so far, myself included.

First of all, he's ten years old, and probably no worse than I was aged ten.

Secondly, he can only get better with practice.

Now, some tips and notes of encouragement for Basti@n:

1. Try to use plain paper if you can. Squared paper looks even worse than lined.

2. You may want to thicken your lines around things. Black rollerball is best, but if you aren't confident doing that, simply go over them again in pencil.

3. The joke... well, it's simple, but at least I get it, which is an improvement on some of the stuff I've seen on these forums (Agent Luke's art style may have been widely derided, but frankly it was his plots that always left me doing the WTF fandango).

4. Your expressions are quite good. Well, most of them are average, but the grinning worm in the last panel just makes me smile for some reason.

All in all, there's plenty of room to improve, but you can only improve with practice, so keep trying.

Swearing is never the way! Just look at me, I have never let a swearword pass my lips, and I'm rather intelligent :)

Paul.Power

Not only that, the guy's ten and you're telling him to swear.

Besides, it's in character. Any worm naive enough to wander up to a gun barrel and wonder what it is is not going to swear.

As well as what everyone else has said, try to tone down the colour a little. Some subtle colour, such as lighter blues for the sky, and a bit more care taken with colouring in, will really enhance your drawing. You could try just doing line drawings (without colour), to see how it looks. Don't be afraid to experiment. ;)

Also, try keeping the drawing level on the scanner, or cropping to square once you've scanned it.

Liketyspli

Why exactly?

Because I think it sound stupid if you say ''uh oh!'' after something happened, i'd rather put that in the 3rd panel, but it can also be caused by my lack of english intelligence...

Hmm... you scould try doing the same pic again, with the same shapes, but using the curve tool on the worms, and no circles and lines on them.

Why exactly?

Level of maturaty, I'd say. Swearing is only funny if you know what your doing. If you put it in a comic randomly, or over use it, people know it's out of place.

Uhm... I can see the try on improvement... You can go better, I see the effort.

Some things I would like to tell there:

-NEVER copy-paste things. and it's even worse if you use it for a different thing (unless for backgrounds, or to express total inactivity)

-Perspective. I know this is a bit hard, but you can start to use it whenever you want. But you can do fine without it for now, BUT try to get rid of the earth line... it just doen't look too nice on any pic.

-The shapes: Kilburn gave amazin advice about the shapes. Try to practice on that, before getting your own style. But, most important, practice with your hands. Don't use circles on paint for the head... use the pencil itself! (paint's or real life's) that's the way you'll improve.

Nice to see people are actually trying to help him instead of just telling him to get out, completely ignoring his age. I agree with Slick, keep going and you'll surely get better.

Also, here are some tips. Try to put more effort into the worm's faces. They're the most noticeable part of drawing a worm, and making them look funny and expressive is a vital part of making some good fanart. The worm's grin shouldn't look like a white space, but a bit more detailed and exagerrated; sort of like this:
http://img206.imageshack.us/img206/6861/grin2gk0.gif

Also, the eyes should never be some black dots, unless you're trying to imitate bad 1960s animation. You could try these out instead of dots:
http://img207.imageshack.us/img207/880/eyes2yy8.gif

Anyway, good luck and keep drawing.

Something that often lets artists down is the colour of their worms. You've fallen into that trap - pink worms, and bright sky and grass. While that's OK, as you are new, it'd be a help to use more realistic colours.

For the sky and grass, look out the window. The sky is a darker blue, while you can shade it to look like it's getting darker on the way up, that's a bit beyond your capability at the moment. ;) The grass too is darker, try to steer away from the temptation of just using the garish greens on the Paint pallette. To get good colour, you need to fiddle with the colours a bit.

Click on Colours>Edit Colours on the menu. Then select a good base colour (the blue 3rd from the right on the top row is a good one for sky), and click Define Custom Colours. You'll have a box with lots of colour, and a sidebar with shades. For the moment, ignore the large box and move the arrow on the sidebar up and down to change the shading of the blue.

If you don't find a shade you're happy with (keep looking outside, or compare with photographs of the sky), experiment with the numbers in the Red, Green and Blue numbers on the right below the sidebar. Changing them alters the colour, but remember the starting values incase you go wrong. When you have the colour you want, click 'Add to Custom Colours'. Next time you want it, click Colours>Edit Colours again, then select it on the custom colours menu and click OK.

Worms skin tones are hard to do. You follow the same basic tips, but it's much harder to find a good skin tone. Here's a little illustration showing some of the starting Red, Green and Blue values, and a couple of tones you can use copy and paste to get into Paint to play around with.

I'll host them for you now, but I'll probably remove them after a week or so.

If you're going to scan art then please use a seperate page rather than drawing on both sides of the page, because the other side shows through and it doesn't look very good at all. At least it's an improvement on your last comic though, although I'm not too sure what's going on.

It means downloading 3 files, then extracting onto our hard drive, just to see two large pictures that we'll delete straight away anyway.

We won't look back at them, and nobody'll view your pictures. At least if you host it somewhere online and link to it, people can see your stuff one click away. Most people here won't look at those part files, hence why I've just slapped them onto my page for now.

Part files are OK for things like a big game you've made or something, but for 2 118k jpg files, what's the point?

How do you laugh "in a social way"? That sounds a bit like you're faking it trying to make someone happy.
We were having fun with the comic because we thought the story and dialog were silly and funny. We tried to act out the dialog on teamspeak and it was hilarious. Is that making fun of him? I don't think so, personally.
The others even compared it to their own drawings they made at a young age.

I think he's very brave to show of his work here, and he's doing quite well picking up drawing techniques.

True, but we don't know whether basti@n is putting a lot of effort in or not. He could have well put quite a bit of effort into this, as think there's still an improvement from the original comic he did, it's just that it doesn't show so well. The art still isn't great, that's true, but you can't expect such a leap in talent so quickly.

Hell, I'm 18 and I'm STILL learning to draw. I was actually much worse than this when I was 10, and if it weren't for me wanting to improve my art for creating game graphics and animations, then I'd never draw at all and I'd probably still be really bad at it. I still can't draw people's legs or faces well at all, I just suck at drawing. My Worms comic has OK art, but it's nothing like I'd like it to be.

I'm quite glad nobody mocked the rubbishness of my drawing when I set up my thread, as it'd've been a bit de-moralising. I can't help but think that laughing publicly at basti@n's comic in such a way will only stop him from carrying on, and I'd feel bad if it did. I really want to improve my art, and basti@n probably does too. Sure, we've laughed at it, but I suppose we don't need to publicly mock it and humiliate the poor lad.

Of course, this is entirely hypocritical of me, what with me joining in on the making fun slightly, but I admit it's just too easy. Over a forum it's too easy to not take people's feelings into account, as it can seem that they're just a username, not a real person. I'm sorry if I or any of us have offended you basti@n, and the same goes for your fan game (http://forum.team17.co.uk/showthread.php?t=31723) thread. Nobody expects brilliance from the start, and it takes a while to practice. We were all there once. I remember when I first got excited about making a game and bit off far too much than I could chew. It doesn't help when people laugh in your face. We're aren't being mean for the sake of being mean. In fact, we're not trying to be mean at all, we aren't like that, it's just one of those things.

-EDIT- I wasn't on TeamSpeak, I have no idea what was said on there. I'm thinking more about me changing my avatar and the original post where I've linked to the spyworm comic hosted on my website. I've changed them back now, because in hindsight I think it was a bit mean. Basti@n will have most likely not seen it, and I'm glad of that.

Ooh 'Eck, now we feel all hollow. Like Chocolate Bunnies of discontent.

Look, we weren't laughing at it in a malicious, horrible way. We were amused, yes. The art is not fantastic, sure. You can follow the story, but it's not particularly complex. What else do you expect from a ten year old? But yes, it's amusing. Amusing in an "If I'm looking for frog" way, not a "Oh man, this comic is so awful! Muahahahaha we are making ourselves feel valid by mocking the work of others!" way.

Let me tell you a story. About a week ago I was rummaging in our attic and I found some of my old school work - drawings I had done back when I was about eight or nine. I found in there a sequential comic I had done, not too dissimilar to the sort of thing Basti@n has done here. Now I'm perhaps blowing my horn a bit when I say that I my drawing skills at the time were above average, but the story and the dialogue was utter shash (how ironic now that I have had my writing acclaimed by the BBC Writersroom, and that I can't draw for toffee). But y'know, I laughed at just how terrible my little comic was. I showed my Mum (whose vision is not fantastic at the moment because of her diabetes) but she remembered the comic, and she remembered how, after I had shown it to her and my Dad twelve years ago they'd had a bit of a snicker at how rubbish it was. It's the way people are.

We're not like Maddox, openly mocking the work of children. We're not saying it's utterly terrible. There's the promise here of a good story, and who knows? Maybe Basti@n will want to explore his writer's side at some point in the future. That he's drawing also shows that he has an interest in art and I have no doubt that this interest, along with his talent, will expand as he gets older. And if Worms is still knocking about when he's older, and if he's still interested in drawing the characters, I don't doubt he'd be able to post some cracking art. We've all gotta start somewhere, after all.

But right now, we're enjoying it. This art amuses us not because it's in any way rubbish. There's plenty of truly rubbish art in this forum, and we don't sit in chat rooms and TeamSPeak giggling amongst ourselves about how rubbish it is. This is different, and that we're talking about it just goes to show how much of an impact it has made.

There's a TeamSpeak room full of people who feel really hollow, really bad because they were enjoying a young person's art. If you felt what we were doing was in any way inappropriate, maybe you could've said something to us at the time. Perhaps SupSuper's comment about you joining in the laughter was ill-judged, I won't deny that. But there's nothing wrong with having laughed at it. Life's too short to take every little thing on this planet seriously, to take everything at face value and just accept it without question. That's one of the reasons I'm moving to LA - life is too short, so live it while you can. Those guys were trying to enjoy Basti@n's work. Now they feel bad about it. Personally, I don't think there's anything to feel bad about. I wish people talked about my work as often.

I originally set my avatar to its current form in jest. I'm keeping it this way now, as a testament to both this thread and to Basti@n's work which I don't doubt will improve with age.

G-Lite, I'm glad to hear that! There were so many people talking at once that I couldn't follow it all. I didn't hear any of the bits about comparing to their own drawings. Maybe that was after I left?

Also I did not go to look at the thread until the conversation had gone on for a while already (and I had no context to place it in until that point).

I have more to say on this matter, but right now I'm gonna go eat... I'll read Melon's and Squirm's posts when I get back.

I left the TeamSpeak room precisely because I didn't want to make you guys feel hollow. I wasn't sure that my feelings on the matter were justified, and I didn't know how to voice them at the time anyway.

SupSuper's comment was indeed ill-judged, as it singled me out on something that happened when I didn't even completely know what was going on. My reply to his post was a knee-jerk reaction. What I said communicates how I felt at the time, but in defending myself I no longer protected the TeamSpeakers' feelings.

When I'm amused at something, I usually don't reflexively laugh out loud. (The type of things I genuinely laugh at are usually absurd and/or unexpected.) When there are people around I laugh to communicate my amusement. It's not exactly "fake"; the amusement is usually real.

Really, what I was laughing at during the Teamspeak session were Squirminator's voice impressions. He's brilliant at it! I didn't say that out loud; instead I held down my "talk" button and laughed into the microphone! (Ironically, "press to speak" does not work well with spontaneous laughter. I think that problem may have come up in the past, and I may have mimicked a bout of laughter right after it happened, repeating it for the microphone. Still, I prefer this mode.)

The main thing that disgusted me, and made me leave unceremoniously, is that once I realized what was going on (and had a chance to process it), I thought of how Bastian would feel if he heard you guys laughing at his comic strip — or more accurately, I thought of how *I* would feel if I had been in that situation at that age. I had no defense mechanisms for teasing yet; around ages 13-14 or so I learned to take teasing in a humorous way, but at age 10 I simply would have felt bad... and maybe even discouraged from drawing. (In fact, I did later get discouraged from drawing, but for a different reason — self-criticism. I was and am talented at art, but my perfectionism discourages me from doing much of it these days. Perhaps there are also other reasons that I am as-yet unaware of. I do wish I'd kept it up!)

I can see that there are many aspects of Bastian's Spyworm drawings that are amusing. But for me this is not a laughing kind of amusement; it's more of a "that's cute" amusement. To Bastian, it must be ultra-cool; I remember feeling that way about things I would draw. I drew spaceships and weapons and control panels and underground houses, and mazes with cool stuff like teleporters and death-pits.

I'm impressed by Bastian's four-frame coloured strip in post #1. It shows a sophistication that I surely didn't have at age 10. I love how the cannonball "splats" against that worm... it's delightfully ridiculous. And the enemy worm gloating in the upper-right! I like the colouring too. The computerized version shows some technical skill but it's not enough (yet); the feeling is lost.

Basti@n, if you're reading this, I think you should stick with pencil-and-crayon (for now, at least) and do some more small strips like the 4-frame one! And post them here, please. I'd like to see more.

Perhaps it's worth pointing out that he hasn't posted since this thread went from good natured critisism to not ill-meaning, but still a little misguided, jesting and laughter? I sincierly hope he hasn't been driven away or upset by this, he's ten years old for goodness' sakes. He shows great promise, but to come onto a forum at that age, look up to people who to him seem like amazingly talanted and mature people, people who are almost twice his age, and see them seemingly mocking him? Even if it did go down the wrong way, it's still not a nice feeling.

Bastian: You have the potential to be a very good artist. Please do not be discouraged by this, keep drawing, keep practicing, and we'll help you.

What S2K said.

Sorry, Bastian, we didn't mean to crush your spirit or anything like that. I'm not going to say "you have the potential to be a very good artist." because so does everyone who draws comics at your age. But unintentionally or otherwise, your stuff is comedy gold, and I would not wish to discourage you from posting it.

Please don't take my laughter personally, I am very easily amused (within the bounds of good taste), and things like this just set me off.

And I agree with Deadcode about Ben's voices, they did bring it out rather.

(And come to think of it, Bastian's plotwriting is no worse than, say, most of the stuff on Superman Is A Dick (which Ben, Daniel and I were also browsing last night), and those comics was written by adults...)

Yes, yes it has.

I really wish that there was an acceptable way to have fun with this stuff without it being misinterpreted as insulting.
Probably the BEST way is for the artist to be unattached from their work, so their art can be bashed to high heaven, but they won't feel like it's a personal insult.
Then they can laugh at their own work, and everyone is happy.

Don't know if this is true, though. Especially if the artist is 10.

Is that really better? I'd rather care about my work and be offended if people needlessly mock it than just scratch out something I didn't care about and throw it to the wolves. That seems pointless to me.

It's something that makes more sense in a professional setting, where it's most likely that your work will be strongly criticized. If you take criticism as a personal insult, then it won't be long before you just give up.

Now that I think about it, that isn't really all that applicable to this situation. My mistake. :p

When I wrote "Deadcode laughed at this", I meant it as "Even Deadcode laughed at this", because we all know how Deadcode is a god around these forums. I didn't mean that he laughed in a derogatory or mocking manner, or that he was only one to laugh at it. We all laughed. Even he did. It's the reaction the comic immediatly causes, and it's not a bad thing. :)

That's true to some point, except, everyone is different. People mocked and criticized my art to death, and yeah, I took that as an insult. But that was a part of my motivation for trying to get better.
It's just an indicator of your personality. If you let opinions of others make you feel bad so you quit doing something, then you wont get very far in life at all.

Actually I loved cats! (And still love them.) Somehow, that is not at all inconsistent with the humor of the drawings. :)You and I have a fairly common beginning. I love cats myself, and even more so when I was a kid, and it showed in my drawings. One of my first major art endeavors was a downright rediculous... well, more or less an entire comic book, and then some, of the badly drawn story of some guy named Nick and his cat who had to chase some dog around to such places as... hmm, the moon. Yes, seriously.

Those are dang excellent for being 9 when you made them.

I never put the year on my art, so it's hard for me to properly date my many drawing journals.
The only thing I know I did excessively back then was doodle elaborate 2D video games into spiral bound notebooks. And I'm talking about the giant 180-page notebooks, and I filled them all up in a matter of days.
And I can barely remember what it all means now.

Mine too! XD

umm can we get another comic soon? I find them entertaining. :)

Maybe... What about now... Worms city? A worms war? The sequel to spyworm!? (Spyworm II... Not a bad idea...) mmmmm... i prefer spyworm II...
29446

Hehehe, Spyworm with a pistol, but also that stupid lightsaber that finds on the comic... He thinks that is better than is old minigun! (If you have seen closely the 1st scene off that comic it haves a minigun, but on the last scene, it puts the lightsaber inside that tube with a rare liquid... XD)

Now making Spy worm II... The sequel to the being a bit "famous" Spyworm (Even Wormthingy, Paul.Power, SupSuper and Squirminator2k are using spyworm avatars...) is coming, but is more long... Now better set more lower the .jpg quality and higher the compression ;).

Heads up about file types: Don't use MS Paint to save .GIF's, or it'll reduce colors to that grainy checkerboard thing like that. Since you're only using a few colors, .PNG should work fine for you. It's lossless, which can make it large for more detailed pictures, but is good for MS Paint scribblers like us.

Here's some tips:
1: Outline the eyes in all panels! It makes things a lot easier to see.
2: Make the pupils smaller.

4: Don't save the images as either GIF or JPEG. Save them as PIF instead.

In any case, judging by the small text size, the forum probably resized the image for him, and thus JPEG'd it.

Basti@n:
- If you wanna attach an image to the forum, it can't be bigger than 468x468. Otherwise, split it in smaller chunks or use Imageshack (http://www.imageshack.us)
- There's no need to number the panels when the reading order is already left-to-right-top-to-bottom.

And one last thing.
Please save as PNG not JPEG.

Spyworm II is funny in a way that feels like the original.* It even manages to capture the essence of the hand-drawn style... which is impressive, because using Paint is totally different than using a pencil.

Some things about it that made me laugh:
1. Secret Agents are usually heroes, and they usually work for someone higher up. Spyworm is an anti-hero, answering to no one but himself, and everything he's done so far seems to be out of personal greed or pure aggression! And he isn't even all that smart (he attacks his own reflection!)
2. He steals the lightsaber by fighting Lukeworm with... another lightsaber! One that looks EXACTLY the same.
3. The plot makes absolutely no sense starting with frame 14. (In the first Spyworm this happened at frame 15.)

Bastian, thanks for the 4-frame mirror comic! I have a question for you. Is Spyworm supposed to be a hero or a villain? Or neither?

*Unintentional humour included. (Although I'm no longer entirely convinced it's unintentional.) Forget what I said earlier in the thread. I was caught off-guard, and I'm sorry for any resulting fun-dampening that may have resulted! I may not have known what was going on when I laughed in the TeamSpeak, but if it happened again now and I knew exactly what was going on, I would still laugh!

Neutral-villain... Or some like that, LOL, really he should say "spy" or "ninja" or something instead or secret agent... :D

And why a Neutral-villain? Simple, because he worked (Now no) as secret agent, then he decided to be a spy instead of a secret agent, he calls himself as a "secret agent" because he his as intelligent as one (Even a bit more) and was one (and wants to be one again XD).

And really, Spyworm was just a random idea, mixing worms with ninjas/spys.

Either the worm or both. You don't see Durian on his own.

At the end of the day, if you're making a foum comic, then it's up to you. Only add in Durain if you feel he will add something to the story.

Yeah. i deleted the link from my sig..

So bastian, that isnt my newest sigworm ;)

here's every needed thing i suppose from another post...

"Personality: kind of crazy.
Abilities: Can suck powers out of people, and "inherit" their powers. Also makes his basic powers of SLIGHTLY morphing, and SLIGHTLY hovering into GOOD shapecanging power, (and making things go through him, like a ghost) and GOOD flying. (OH YEAH) Also can make a white bright ball that he shoots with, smaller makes faster shooting but weak power, Bigger makes slower shooting but GREAT power. Can sometimes appear of nowhere if enough power. (OH GOD THE ABILITIES)

Background of story is that he once were baren incendo, and he had a castle and then a giant white monster with red eyes came and attacked him, resulting him in dying, yet he managed to make a last swing on the monsta. Now he was ressurected a hundred years later when the monsters soul entered his boddy.

and that sums it up.

.....that was a bad story."

And i agree.
