I installed Worms for on my Dell pc with windows XP. When attempt to run software, receive message: No disc inserted.
Please insert original Worms 4 Mayhem DVD. Retry or Cancel.

I've spoken to Phil Johnson of Majestic. We've tried the following:
1. replace disk in case damaged - done
2. check computer spec against requirements - done
3. make sure to have latest drivers for NVIDIA GE Force 68000 graphics card. went through control panels to upgraade. receive message that have most current version for hardware.
4. turn off virus / spyware software while running. - done
5. Make sure disk is not in DVD drive while running - done
6. Contact team 17....

By the way, the program doesn't run even with the DVD in the drive!!!!
Please help! We've been trying to get this software to run since Christmas!

Thanks,

7. Are you sure it's a DVD drive?

I've tried both a DVD Read only and a DVD R/RW drive when installing the software.

Have I missed something here, or is this a really stupid step? The game won't work if "disk is not in DVD drive".

I've tried with disk in and out of drive. Neither situation works. After installing, many software packages no longer require the disk to be in the drive as the code is already on the hard drive! Wasn't sure which way this software would work so tried both ways. No luck either way.

Does the Majestic release have still have the Starforce copy protection?

Hmm. If the problem isn't in the disk, and it isn't in the drive, it must be in the other hardware or the software.

Will the game install from the same disk on another computer (not of the same brand)?

If no, then there is something wrong with the disks. I suggest contacting whatever party sold you the CDs for a refund.

If yes, then it's probably either some software interfering with the copy protection - check what anti-virus/system protection/virtual CD software you have installed, and try disabling/removing them.

There might also be a remote possibility that the IDE controller on your motherboard doesn't support the I/O operations required to verify if the disk is a legit copy.

Strange though.
I can play my Starforce protected copy from Codemasters just fine while Daemon tools is running in the background.

Looking at the original poster's location, I imagine they mean Majesco, which does not have Starforce - it just has their own similar "thing"

Also, this may be a very stupid question, but is your copy of W4 a legitimate copy?

for point 3... going through control panel would ensure you have the latest microsoft certified drivers... you want the latest drivers from nvidia... so head to there site. www.nvidia.com

Yes it's a legitimate copy. Was purchased online from J&R Music world.
I've already had the disk replaced once to see if it was a disk problem. I don't have this problem with any other software that I've installed.

franpa, I doubt this applies to the situation anyway :)

beyerlm: do you have access to another computer you can try installing the game on?

Well, I got it working. It only works when you are logged on as an administrator to the computer. We've been trying to run the program from my son's user ID (a limited user) and have been having all these problems. When I made him as administrator, the game worked fine. Unfortunately, I do not want him having administrator privileges because that allows installation of software, etc.

I think this is a design problem with the software. Once installed, the software should not require anything but reading the software to run? What is it trying to do that required admin priviliges?

I believe that it's because the copy-protection software is trying to access the disk drive at a low hardware level, to read the hidden track data responsible for the copy protection. The CodeMasters version uses StarForce, which installs the copy-protection software when the game is installed (and allows the game to communicate with the StarForce drivers from a limited user account). Thus, this is most likely an issue with Majesco's copy protection system.

IIRC, you can specify certain directories and files to be accessed or executed without having administrator rights.

Too bad it only works for directories and files. We're talking about device I/O here, bonz.
