Just got back from seeing Avatar in 3D. The film was pretty alright (if a little predictable and derivative) and the 3D was actually pretty awesome!

I think we can all agree that Tin Toy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KNvvid4Da-E) is the best piece of animation Pixar has blessed us with.

Yeah the plot is same old, you should only go watch it for the awesome 3D.

I've heard Avatar been described as Pochahontas in space.

I found the plot pretty enjoyable actually, despite being predictable and having been done before.
I should really get to watch it again while it's on the cinema, it's definitely not gonna be the same on a tv, unless I get some monstrous 3d enabled hdtv. :p

Sherlock Holmes. It was fun and entertaining.

Also the Clash of the Titans trailer was awesome. It's got Qui Gon Jinn Fallout 3's "Dad" Liam Neeson on it so it's guaranteed to be enjoyable at the very least. :p

Eh, it's just a crazy cg intensive action flick. They can be as daft as they want, the eye candy is all I expect from this movie.

Eye Candy flicks are annoying. I want a story, and such films don't offer that. Wanted and Avatar are both examples of terrible movies with great visuals.

Would love to hear you expand on why Avatar is such a terrible movie. I've seen some truly horrible movies, several of them during the past few months on tv, and (maybe I'm becoming insensitive to this horribleness?) I really can't see how it's possible for someone to group Avatar together with something like Wanted.

No, but it had some great setpieces.

Avatar is visually arresting. It looks stunning, and there's no doubt it'll have a huge impact on the way films are made. Unfortunately the story is predictable shash, the dialog is awful, and utimately it just didn't work for me. That film was like late-90s Jessica Simpson - nice to look at, but absolutely nothing going on upstairs.

I like my movies to be more like Chris Pine. They need to be intelligent as well as nice to look at. If the plot doesn't work, or I know how the film ends before the ending actually comes (as happened with both Wanted and Avatar) then I may as well have spent my time watching a fireworks show.

I suppose I just approach cg-intensive movies with a much simpler mind. As long as it's not Dragon Ball Evolution bad and the cg is good I'm just peachy. It just doesn't feel right to me to discard the amazing work of all those artists because of the plot. :p

nicolas cage playing the lead role with no personality whatsoever is going to ruin the story aspect of the movie, but good GOD those effects are nice.

holy ****ing **** i didn't even realize that it was a cg render until i got to the bit with the big orbs of water, and even then i was thinking that those were just specially rendered special effects. that was mindblowing

Anyway, I just wanted to say that I ended up seeing Clash of the Titans a couple of weeks ago(NOT in 3d tho, I'm not a fan of fake 3D), and it was incredibly ****. I didn't expect much, just a coherent story and cool effects. All I got semi-cool effects and brain damage out of it. The plot was so badly strung together and the characters were so bland... it was almost as bad as Dragon Ball: Evolution.

So yeah you won this time.

On the plus side, I say Ironman 2 yesterday. Feel much better now.

I had the unbridled joy of feasting my eyes upon How To Train Your Dragon this passed tuesday. among the best animation I've seen in a long time and I just generally loved that movie! SO beyond glad I went to see it.

It was excellent, wasn't it? Lacked the depth of a Pixar feature, but was by far the best non-Pixar 3D spectaculare I've ever seen.

More recently, I saw Iron Man 2. I think they should subtitle it 'Iron Man 2: Prepare for Disappointment'.

Monsters vs Aliens was just an aimless slapstick mess. Felt like an half-hour cartoon made for very young kids.

Also I realise I said '3D' before, but I actually meant computer animated. There's a hell of a lot of good cartoon films out there, but computer-generated films with a good plot and a sense of style have been purely the domain of Pixar up until How To Train Your Dragon, in my opinion.

I thought Robots had a good sense of style, even if it was a standard "underdog inventor vs. big business" plot. Mel Brooks stole the show wonderfully.

Ice Age 1 was pretty good too, although I didn't care for the sequel.

And any scene in a Madagascar movie with the penguins is :D, although the rest of the time they're pretty mediocre.

With my previous comment I tried to imply that clay animation is much better than computer animation.

Besides, Aardman's storytelling is much better, plus, it has that subtle, weird British humor I like.

Most Dreamworks and Pixar production are just the generic Hollywood-style stories IMO.

The main problem with Dreamworks' CG movies is that they're specially designed to be milkable. They all start out ok but then end up with tons of ****ty sequels until the name alone gives you a rash. Well that and they're all THIS GUY IS SO QUIRKY HYUCK-HYUCK.

I haven't watched How to Train a Dragon yet, although the trailer feels a lot like it's trying to cash in on Avatar-style cheap thrills.

Absolutely it is, but it does it well. Cheap thrills can be good fun.

Just saw the midnight opening of Inception at an IMAX theater. Good LORD it was good. 2.5 hours long yet engaging throughout, and a plot that's complex as hell yet almost never confusing. Awesome visuals, wonderful Zimmer soundtrack, just... agh, so good. I can't think of any complaints at all. Don't know how long it's been since I've seen a movie that's so utterly satisfying.

It doesn't show in theaters here until next Friday. Maybe I should go watch it..
I haven't been to the movies since I saw Avatar, well, not since Alice in Wonderland but that barely counts! And 9.6 on imdb is very rare.

damn it. I hadn't even heard of that movie until I went down for vacation with the family. now there's no way I can resist going watch it at some point... and I'm TRYING to horde money right now...
