Whenever i enter a google-related site (examples: Gmail, Google Video,...), my browser freezes. So i got these 3 questions:

1. Does anybody else have that problem?
2. Does anyone know what's going on?
3. Is there a way to fix it?

Same happens to me if I use netscape ( on school ), so here is my tip, throw netscape if you have one, out of window and if you have IE, remove that too, and install wether Firefox or Opera

What browser are you using?

Does this happen even on google.com? If it does, your computer is defective. Google.com is almost the simplest site on the internet.

Gmail and Google Video are rather more complex, and use a lot of Javascript. If they're the problem, update your browser -- Google's sites are all optimised for Firefox, so get that from getfirefox.com

If that doesn't fix it, then that must mean that either your computer is so slow or full of useless programmes that a bit of javascript kills it or else Google are deliberately attacking you personally for no reason.

No, it only happens to websites like Google Video, Gmail and others.

What? No, no-ho-ho! No, no, no. No, Andrew, no. No. I'm not gonna download Firefox!

on other Javascript-using websites, everything goes fine.
If Google needs to attack someone for no reason, then WHY ME???

Another question: Does the problem get solved if i update Java? (if there is an update of it?)

Try shutting down every program thats open except from your browser. then see if it loads faster without freezing

My first guess would be that you have this problem on all sites that use AJAX technology, meaning the MSXML activex component of your IE install is broken. Tell me if the calculator on this page (http://www.twinhelix.com/javascript/htmlhttprequest/demo/) works for you.

If you're not going to try suggestions, why the hell did you ask for help? Download it. See if it fixes the problem, because if it does, it helps us to determine the problem.

Good idea!

Bad idea!

Its not a bad idea, its just not possible...

Well at least on win2k you can remove IE by inserting the win2k disk and choosing to remove IE. And it IS good idea, IE has dozens of hole for trojans and such, firefox is much more secure aswell as opera is. And it does that all the time with netscape, havent tried actually at home but at school it doesnt work on those pages...pc just freezes, if you're lucky you can press ctrl+alt+del and choose to shut down the process, which however isnt possible at school cause of the restrictions at there

Firefox is a bit overrated; Opera is a bit more stable and has more features, from what I've heard. Try getting that. If you don't feel like downloading another browser, then don't start threads like this.

What features Opera exatcly has that firefox doesnt ? And I think Opera is a bit more heavier program than Firefox

Nothing that you can't add with plugins, but some people don't like to deal with plugins.

It's faster. Takes a little longer to initially load up, but it is faster. I don't know about FireFox, but Opera does allow the use of Mouse Gestures.

Plenty of plugins available for that purpose. I'd bet there is a plugin for every purpose you can imagine.
(The only problem at times is that the authors don't update their work to be compatible with a new version of FF.)

That's simply not true. I've never heard of a Firefox extension that can replicate Opera's zooming, or the fit-to-window-width button. Plus, Opera has many features which exist in Firefox but aren't as good.

It's a mych bigger programme in terms of memory, download, disk space and CPU, and the bugs are in different places, so while I try not to use Opera on my desktop (because of a bug), it's fine on my laptop where Firefox doesn't start (because of a much sillier bug).

Pick one you like. But if you will insist on (presumably) using IE, the worst browser ever, then I'm not going to help you.

The real reasons why i don't wanna download Firefox:

Since my lappy belongs to my whole household, i don't wanna get a box on the ear!
WHY DO YOU NEED ANOTHER BROWSER IF YOU ALREADY HAVE ONE?!?!

can somebody plz close this thread? I don't want this to turn into a flame war!

Because Internet Explorer is a terrible piece of virus-gathering filth. :p

Ok then, easy solution.

Get another browser that you can use and the rest of your family can suffer the use IE.

Stick with IE.

Now, I do believe you should try this (http://forum.team17.co.uk/showpost.php?p=550656&postcount=8).

Plasma, can you not see that it isn't worth sticking with IE? By switching, you'll save so much trouble in the long run.

Damn me, I sound like a salesmen.

Are you saying Opera uses more memory than Firefox? Damn. I didn't think ANYTHING used more memory than Firefox. I've had Firefox be using over 200 megs of memory from its leaks.

Neither. She said:

1. Since my lappy belongs to my whole household, i don't wanna get a box on the ear!
2. WHY DO YOU NEED ANOTHER BROWSER IF YOU ALREADY HAVE ONE?!?!

By getting Opera or Firefox onto the Laptop so she can use it, she will be able to use it and feel the benefits and with IE still on, the rest of the family can use that, therefore, saving her from any punishments.

However, if she does choose Not to install another browser, she will have to solve the many problems that will arise with IE.

Firefox just uses ~30MB HDD and ~45MB RAM (with 10+ plugins installed watching the T17 forum).

Really, you should try it out.
Just make sure not to set it as the default browser so the rest of your family can continue suffering.

Besides that, I can't actually help you with IE, as I haven't been using it for over a year now.

I have never heard that expression in my life. :p
But I used to be like you, IE would always freeze on me and slow down my computer a lot. And it seemed like it instailled plugins with out me knowing, which isnt good. I'm not saying "GET FIREFOX DEWD", however I recomend getting any OTHER browser than IE. Pretty much anything is better than that.
I have 3 browsers on my computer. And I use FireFox one the most, because its the best. It's like you saying, "I don't want a new sucker" after it has fallen on the floor and has hair and crap stuck to it, just because you already have a sucker.:p

Please tell us what version of IE you are using. The latest is 7. Also try what M3ntal suggested (http://forum.team17.co.uk/showpost.php?p=550656&postcount=8).

Then again I must say that you should get Firefox. I got IE7 when it was released and I didn't like the layout very much. So I thought 'I'll get Firefox' and it was one of the best ideas that I've ever had that's computer related. It is so much better.

But I don't wanna start any arguments again so just read what everybody else and I have said about Firefox, Opera, etc. instead of going crazy about it.

Why are you arguing bout it. If she wants to use browser with plenty of holes and she likes viruses and such, yeah lets all use IE ! But incase we want to be safe, stop using that sh*t and use Firefox or Opera

Pickleworm

She has said that she does not want to switch browsers, so let's stop telling her to. The majority of the internet uses IE, there is undoubtedly a solution that does not involve switching browsers.

Well we could find the answer if she does what I said in the top paragraph of my last post *hint hint*.
