Haven't tried it yet, but I've heard plenty of retro fanboyism surrounding it, and if it's anything like OpenTTD I'd probably have fun with it too.

post filler goes here mayo mayomayo mayo vmayo

Wait a minute, this is Railroad Tycoon, not Transport Tycoon. Alas.

I'll probably play it anyway, though, because I'm a huge Civ fan.

so is this like OpenTTD, except only trains? because I think trains were my least favorite part of OpenTTD

double edit: nevermind

I suspect this as a promotional trick for Sid Meier's Railroads!

As far as I've tried, it's a lot more complicated than Transport Tycoon, although a lot more detailed since it's only about trains. Maybe Paul will like it. I still prefer Transport Tycoon though.

If I build my railroads on big sticks at sharp inclines, can I get Rollercoaster Tycoon this way?

Hmm? TTD is all about the trains D;
Build massive intricate track systems and figure out how to run it smoothly.. where's the fun in not doing that?

The Transpennine Express seem to be enjoying not doing exactly that.

I love watching my buses putter down streets and doing their jobs :) I also like boats and airplanes but trains just don't do it for me for some reason.

I think I used to have this game.

If it's the railroad tycoon I'm thinking of it came with a Paul-pleasingly thick manual.

The copy protection consisted of having too looking through the pictures in the back of the manual to identify the train the game showed you before it let you install it.:p

I think I had a demo for a Railroad Tycoon for Dreamcast that has Rollercoaster Tycoon-like graphics?

There's also a Railroad Tycoon 3, which is (natch) 3D.

I've played Railroad Tycoon II on PlayStation, which irritated me no end. I think it was the lack of a save game feature that did it. Basically meant that trying to do anything that wasn't Sandbox mode wasn't really worth the effort. It was nice to see all those steam engine types, though. But trying to play that first mission - build a big long railroad along America's East Coast and then using the Rocket to try and carry passengers on it. What. The. Hell.

The only downside of trains in OpenTTD is the heartbreak of having to phase out steam. It's partly why I prefer TT to TTD: starting in 1930 rather than 1950 means more types of steam engine and more time to play with them.

O...kay... how do I get DosBox to mount directories with spaces in them (such as "Program Files"...)?

MrBunsy
26 Dec 2006, 15:40
Can't you put them in quotation marks? Otherwise use the DOS names with the first 6 characters and a ~1, eg progra~1

Just tried the quotation marks, and that seems to work. It seems to think I've got an American keyboard though, so i have to use the @ and " keys the other way around.

I have an english keyboard, but my computer thinks it's american. Does anyone know whow to fix that? There should be some language settings somewhere or other.

Anyway, thanks for that. I'll try it some time. They don't mention that in the FAQ at all, you'd think they would...

If you have a Mac, go to the International control panel, hit Input Menu, uncheck U.S., and check British.

If you don't have one, it is a mystery.

O...kay... how do I get DosBox to mount directories with spaces in them (such as "Program Files"...)?Directories longer than 8 chars get reduced to 8 chars, as per DOS fashion. You probably have to mount "C:\PROGRA~1". No idea about spaces though. So it's usually more convenient to stick to DOS naming fashion for stuff you're gonna mount in DOSBox.

Just tried the quotation marks, and that seems to work. It seems to think I've got an American keyboard though, so i have to use the @ and " keys the other way around.Yeah, DOSBox uses the same keyboard layout for all keyboards. You'd have to use the built-in keymapper (check the readme) to get the keys working the way they should, though even that is pretty awful. I just get used to the different layout. :p

I have an english keyboard, but my computer thinks it's american. Does anyone know whow to fix that?Control Panel > Keyboard or Control Panel > Regional Settings.

Never mind, it turns out that just clicking the Start menu icon will launch the game through DosBox.

Not that this helps much, as the manual is curiously reticent about how one goes about laying track. Apparantly it involves certain keyboard keys that aren't specified anywhere in the manual.

SupSuper
28 Dec 2006, 17:54
Didn't it involve clicking and holding Shift? Iirc.

As long as we're semi-talking about openttd in here, I'm going to see if my business can survive on only one train. :p My objectives are to link every city on the map on one circuit and survive all the way to the end of the game. I don't care what my competitors are doing. :p

With all the OpenTTD fanatics around here, we should have an online game. Imagine the difficulty of having proper competition!

I like how Munkee and Pikkul and I play. We respect each other's territory and stick to strictly clean tacticcs. :p I doubt anybody else plays like that.

Edit: Also, it just doesn't look like the world of the mid 1900's is ready to accept a one-train transport tycoon. :-/

Wow, good luck with that!

With all the OpenTTD fanatics around here, we should have an online game. Imagine the difficulty of having proper competition!I'd hardly say I'm proper competition. I can run a profit, but I'm very much into the Nintendo business model of "make sure you make a profit" rather than "strive to be market leader". And I still haven't got the hang of signals...

I used to win games in TT1 against the AI by the old cheaty "destroy their roads with level crossings" bug. Against anything smarter than that, I have trouble.

That and I'm a sentimentalist who won't replace steam engines until I have no alternative.

MrBunsy

But you can't do much without signals! That means no huge railnetwork bringing coal across the entire map to just one power station!

And I can't believe I only just discovered OpenTTD, I've been playing the TTD patch for years! The multiplayer is quite fun, especially on really tiny maps.

Last time we played, I was ***ing Munkee and Pikkul. :)

Well, not quite ***ing. I'm winning, but Pikkul's been giving me a pretty good 2nd. Munkee has like 8 trains and 1 bus or something.

And I can't see why you're all worried about competition. I'm mainly a subsidy-go-getter with networks as advanced as the AI's. :p

There's an option where you can choose what types of news alerts show up on the ticker at the bottom and what types pop up as newspaper snippet things. I have just about everything but accidents and new vehicles set to the ticker.

There's an option where you can choose what types of news alerts show up on the ticker at the bottom and what types pop up as newspaper snippet things. I have just about everything but accidents and new vehicles set to the ticker.I know there is, I've already set it up to my preferences, I just find it horrendous how they all seem to pop up at once. They could at least spread them out or something, like in normal maps.
