Hehe, I just saw W:OW advertised on TV in one of those DS ads on the Channel 4 channels. It was during the ads (on now) during 100 funniest moments or something. So far it's the only thing to have made me smile during this programme ;)

I saw W:OW on a game rating show and it got 5.5/10.

In australia, you might call them "commercials" (I'm not sure whether that's true or not, but probably, since everywhere's been Americanised). We in the UK call the ads or advertisments.

"Oz" is a standard reference for Australia, much like the UK is a reference for the United Kingdom.

Ah, I see.

*Changes it*

A bit weird, though, since the letters o and z aren't in Australia

Pronouciation.

Auz-trailia
Oz-trailia

Real pronounciation: Os-tralia
Gross mispronounciation: Oz-tralia

Explanation: Well people are always using abbreviations but unfortunately "Os" doesn't sound very nice so they use the nicer, sharper "Oz" instead.

But surely, Au would make more sense as the standard reference.

AU sounds like "ey, you". No I wasn't calling you, just saying the first two letters of my country.

But if you live in france, you never say "I live in FR". You never say "I live in DE" for germany. And you don't say "I live in CZ" for the czech (sp?) republic.

Er... what?

Really? I would have thought it would have gone like this:

Austrailia -> Aussie -> Ozzie -> z being used for everything.

Not sure why people would pronounce Austrailia with a z, it's harder to say.

Commercials? Ads? Here in sweden we call them "Where's the friggin' mute button?"

When I say Oz, I don't mean you pronounce it OH-ZED or OH-ZEE, I mean Oz.

Australia didn't turn into Aussie, that's just the term for people who live there. Which is kinda weird in itself, but every country has a different way of getting a nickname. (At least they don't have the horrible fate of being called a Kiwi like they do here in NZ) I would have thought Oz came before Ozzie, but it doesn't really make a difference.

Last time I checked people don't pronounce Australia with a z, but they do pronounce the abbreviation with one, for the reason I stated.

Mabye I wasn't very clear. The term Aussie obviously comes from Australia and is used as a term for the people. I know it wasnt a term for the country.

I suspected that was the case, but that suspicion never reached the keyboard.:o
