Looks like the Fire article (http://dwarf.lendemaindeveille.com/index.php/Fire) got some updates:

Fire is difficult to deal with for the same reason civilian dwarves tend to die needlessly during sieges - dwarves are morons. A dwarf will run toward a flaming corpse and attempt to haul it to the tombs or refuse stockpile, or rip its flaming pants off and happily burst into flames from wearing them.
If a dwarf catches fire, don't let him go about his business until he collapses into a heap of fine ash and attracts a crowd of looters with a burning desire for self-immolation
In Adventure Mode, you can set trees and shrub on fire. All beings are also unaware of the fire and will just walk right into it. Human town inhabitants can be wiped out by the inferno, but it may take a while since buildings are made of stone and cannot be burned down. An elf forest can easily be wiped out since they don't use buildings and have a lot of trees. Dwarves are next to impossible to wipe out since there's nothing to burn inside their forts, but you could bring a flaming item into the fort to hope that you could start some chaos (provided that you don't die in the heat while delivering it).

Have you seen the videos available on this (http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/dev_next.html) page? The story of tragedy mule one is very impressive. I might not dig into the mountain, but build a tower for my dwarves to stay in instead. That would be ace.

You're not going to have a hard time copying your world over because you won't be able to. It's a non-compatable update. You're going to need to generate a new one.

But that doesn't matter because it will be so totally awesome.:cool::cool:

Well then. I'm somewhere between relieved and devestated. Which is pretty weird.

Melon

...For serious?

Yeah. Although Adventure mode was partially 3D before, the entire worlds will be 3D now, so you can dig ramps and stairs and stuff inside your mountains. So there's no hope that the old flat worlds will be compatable. Also, the mountains are not just "dig right", but all sorts of funny shapes, and might not even have rivers and lava and chasms inside them.

There's a reason why there's not been an update since January, and that's because pretty much everything has needed to be changed.

Here's an idea: have one big world for the entire forum to share! We'd start off with just one world, and then take turns over who gets to use it (change every week?). That way, we'll be able to sculpture one big land with everone's individual additions to interact with.
Not to mention ending up having one hell of an adventure team, if we ever need it (such as fighting one of 'em big-ass demons (even if I could do it with just one man))

That would be neat, but I'm not going to try and work it out. :p

I just want the ability to have more than one save file in a world at once. Also, no Adamantium-makes-you-stop stuff. Maybe that was already addressed. I haven't really followed this too closely.

Since my worlds are doomed, I decided I needed some sort of finale for the both of them. The endgame of the Plane of Dawning is much too complicated to fit into my attention span at the moment, but since it's very relevant, I shall post what's going on in the Eternal Everlasting Prophecy-Land of Legends here.

First of all, here is the final screenshot of our forum fortress (http://img255.imageshack.us/img255/6631/overviewfinalpo9.png). I abandoned it, since I didn't really feel like trying to wind the whole thing down. I considered taking the door off the lava chamber and flooding the whole fort with magma, but then I thought, wait -- it would be much more fun if I returned to the empty fortress and threw the switch of doom myself!

Starting a new adventure as Heavy Metaltrance...
http://img69.imageshack.us/img69/5278/nutterliveswu6.png
I found Nutter alive in another fort, alongside one of the other guys whose name I don't remember and was just added because I was running out of recognizable names. I recruited the latter into my team, since he was a swordsdwarf. As usual, I had to ask around to learn where the fort was.
http://img214.imageshack.us/img214/1526/famousip9.png
Looks like Liketyspli's masterpiece got some publicity. Regrettably, my adventure got nowhere, because we turned out to be in a walled-off section of the map from which there was no escape.

Two more adventurers came and went.
http://img49.imageshack.us/img49/5719/mtltoastph4.png
It's a real shame Spooky Baldcanyons didn't survive, because it took me a really long time to travel all that way and I killed an unreal number of alligators on the way.

http://img214.imageshack.us/img214/3848/dumbcosmicobc8.png
No thanks to the surviving Mr.Cosmico (in a complete different fortress from the others, mind; they're probably all over the world), it's FordTough Ultrabolts who finally braves the remarkably swampy world to reach the fortress ruin.

http://img113.imageshack.us/img113/1742/valleypg9.png
The fortress is in a pretty geographically cool spot. It's hard to make out, but this is a valley or canyon carved through the mountain range by a river. The west side of the canyon is an ocean, so the only good way to get to this fortress is via the canyon's east side, which is well guarded by alligator-teeming swamps. Also note that there are quite a few dark fortresses nearby.

And here we are on the bridge to our lovely fortress. I looked around for the corpse of Charles Pennington, but maybe it finally completely decomposed or something.

http://img372.imageshack.us/img372/4316/conflictmb9.png
Approaching the entrance turns up pretty much what I expected: A big pile of dead horse matter, the rock stockpile, the trade depot with a few useless knick-knacks still on it, and a huge army of giant moles and batmen who want to make me die.

Which is a great pity considering that I wanted to look at all the bodies of the people who died. All I was able to see was a HUGE semi-ring of dead animals at the enterance!

The thing is, no dwarvish settlements are anywhere near it, somehow, and it's amazing how much of the world is covered in swamp and how little of it is covered in town. Maybe that first region I tried is the closest, but then there's like a 50/50 chance of ending up in that little penned-in area of doom. I suppose a human or maybe even elvish settlement might be closer by, but man, that's a long list to experiment through. Maybe I'll check the world map I exported.

Edit: Yeah, holy hell, there isn't another human, dwarvish or elvish establishment for miles away from that freakin' fortress ruin. I wonder how I picked such a damn secluded spot. I think I actually have been starting from the closest place to it, and it's still days and days of in-game travel. Dangerous in-game travel.

Edit: Here's a better look at where the fortress is geographically. There's even more mountain than swamp in this place.
http://img338.imageshack.us/img338/9347/facecrafthl1.png

Check out that little clearing in the mountains which is only reachable by following that river into it. It's all wasteland and has a couple of dark fortresses. I might check that out sometime.

Ah well. Let's see how Freeshoots, professional thrower, does.

Well, I've found Pigbuster and Worm Mad bumming around somewhere. And Squirminator! :)

And MadEwokHerd. This place must be popular. I'm finding a bunch of recruits to bring with me, too, which is good because I'll have next to no defense at close range.

Edit: It's down to my axeman and me because the other two guys were freaking morons and wandered off somewhere and I got sick of waiting.

Freeshoots arrives safely at the fort, despite having lost everybody else in his party because they were all idiots who would rather wander around in the middle of nowhere for eternity. This time, however, I'm using the side door by the residential wing -- they're not expecting that.

http://img300.imageshack.us/img300/481/awesomeroomscm7.png
I lug a sandstone from the rock stockpile with me and enter Sneak mode as I proceed slowly through the fortress. This is the first time I've actually had an opportunity to really explore one of my fortresses, so I'm finding the whole experience unbearably cool. I found a barrel full of meat and decided to carry it with me for throwing ammo, since it was a lot lighter than the sandstone. Picking up on the faint smell of awesome, I look down the hall and notice the awesome detailed rooms of the fort's two most awesome occupants, but unfortunately, they are guarded by a giant bat and a batman. It'd be best to avoid a conflict like that for the moment.

http://img522.imageshack.us/img522/9074/munkeedoorzh7.png
I arrived at the northeastern portion of the big bedroom complex, where the nobles' rooms were being set up. This door reaffirms my belief that Munkee was probably our fort's hardest worker.

Even more so, get a look at this -- he decorated this door with the image of that legendary artifact Thnikk created.

Slowly making my way to the old workshop production area, I have a look around and find some servicable turtle bone armor still hanging around in Munkee's workshop. It also contains a bunch of other arts and crafts much nicer than the ones I've been finding scattered around. They'd probably be worth a small fortune in town, but riches aren't why I'm here.

http://img106.imageshack.us/img106/7747/graveyardqu2.png
Here's my oh-so-artistic cemetery. It's a little hard to believe that it's only occupied by GrimOswald and MtlAngelus. I went into that little antechamber sort of thing in the back there and found a large, cut adventurine in the corner. Ironic.

I managed to knock it unconscious by throwing stuff and then beat it to death with the meat barrel. My right foot is pretty messed up, though, which sucks like all hell because it means I'm stuck on the ground for the rest of my trip, and I have a loooong way to crawl.

I'm on my way to cross the river, when suddenly I get a great idea.

Sadly, like an idiot, I forgot to screenshot the ominous final passageways or the ominous jet floodgate which would usher doom into the fortress. But I did reach the lever of death and throw it.
http://img512.imageshack.us/img512/2022/magmaproofoq9.png
Here I am just kind of crawling along through the magma flow. I'm immune to it for one reason or another -- could be just that I'm a version behind everyone else and it doesn't really affect me yet. So there I am, just kind of walking the magma wall casually down the passageway back into the fortress.

http://img69.imageshack.us/img69/5092/chasmdiedo9.png
Until I open the door to the chasm, anyway. I instantly plummet into oblivion. I theorize that I was probably swept off the side of the bridge with the magma flow. Pretty cool way to die, anyway.

Problem is, I don't think the magma had the chance to infiltrate the whole fort. Those other double doors probably stopped the flow. I'll have to send another adventurer to double-check.

Edit: Okay, currency trading can kiss my ass. I was having an amazing run as that lasher, followed by a stupidly powerful team. Originally, it was two hammermen and two macemen, but at the end of my run, I was down to one hammerman but had three macemen and a swordsman. I'd sold a handful of things for money, which is easier to carry and all, and spent quite some time looking around for an iron whip. I decided a bronze whip wouldn't be a bad step up, so I went ahead and decided to spring for that. I completed the transaction and picked up my new whip.

That is, I assumed that my money would be transferred automatically. Well that was a pretty dumb assumption of me. So I accidentally took my new whip without paying for it.

http://img229.imageshack.us/img229/4456/hellrk4.png

Damn it.

Surprisingly, a few of my longer-term party members, including good ol' 'Toasty' Breadticks, maceman, actually decided to fight on my side instead of turning against me with the rest of the town. They died too. It was a spectacular fight. Too bad I died almost immediately.

One fine winter's day, Kingblazes, the Sword of Sounding, a god-sent demigod of ridiculous power, returned to the flooded fortress Iddumat. He bore three legendary weapons: Two were great swords wielded by other demigods before him, a heroic scimitar and a wrathful two-handed sword. Both had been killed by the same goblin swordmaster in the dark fortress Tickfurs; it was Kingblazes who avenged their deaths, taking the swordmaster's crown for good measure, and bore their weapons from that place after eradicating all traces of the evil presences that occupied it. The last weapon he held was the one called the "Hairymetal axe," for it was engraved with the image of a dwarf called Hairymetals being struck down by the lion Fungusrogues. The warrior who owned the axe gained incredible power, even for a mortal; it had been lost when he went to Tickfurs. Very, very many other adventurers attempted Tickfurs in order to reclaim this axe, but it was guarded by a seemingly endless army of goblins and goblin weapon masters. It was Kingblazes who finally concluded the incredible saga, and he brought these artifacts to Iddumat to merge all of the legends of the world into one surprisingly peaceful finale. He cast the three weapons into the flooded abyss, where they would rest forever, alongside the fortress' many occupants.

It really is an incredible story. I love this game.

By the way, that guy Kingblaze had a good run destroying an asston of things after sacrificing the legendary weapons to Iddumat. Giants, cyclopses, bronze collossi, no big deal.

A hilarious prank of sorts gone horribly awry ended up with him messily killing a large portion of a human town somewhere. Bad for the reputation. I might post an MSN chat log where I detailed the whole thing. But anyway, I leave a building somewhere and an iron arrow misses me by a tile. I spot the shooter and start running, just charging all berzerker-like at him like friggin' Mitsurugi in the Soul Calibur 2 intro, arrows flying by me. I'm on the TILE RIGHT IN FRONT OF HIM. He fires off the luckiest shot in the history of the universe and hits me in the head in such a fashion that it somehow destroys my left eye and my throat.

BUT!

Using my last few moments, I put my sword away, extracted the arrow from my own head and fatally impaled him with it.

This will be the end of the stories of the world of the Plane of Dawning; the death of Kingblaze, the world's ultimate badass.

Ah yes. I had a similar experience when I was hunting a Zombie Archer, the boss of a zombie-infested ruins. First go, the arrow whizzes right in front of me when I was entering a room. Starting running up to him, moving to the side, which made him miss the second time. Third go, he fired one more shot, but I was lucky enough to deflect it with my shield. Fourth go, I finally managed to get to him, and one powerful smash from my mighty hammer had turned his bow into mere splinters! At that point, I had great fun smashing him around the place!
Not bad for a blind man.

Also, there was one time when I was fighting the bad-ass demon that can take over your entire dungeon, I didn't know where he was, so I went looking around. And just as I entered one room, there was a HUGE pillar of fire that engulfed the entire corridor that I was in just one step ago! Man, that was close!

In my last fortress I made the mistake of going beond the magma whilst woefully unprepared.

My dwarves didn't stand a chance. What made it more unnerving was the way I couldn't see them until a big fireball zoomed down my main corridor.

Not only that, but they trashed EVERYTHING! It's not the best way to go if you want to revisit it with an adventurer, as there's nothing left to look at. It's just empty and swarming in demons.

Right. Here, I've managed to narrow it down to just one demon, and I'm doing pretty well so far.
This shouldn't be too hard...
http://img519.imageshack.us/img519/8975/dfpicsb8.png
...would be what I'd be saying, except that HE ISN'T DYING! Effing hache!

http://img80.imageshack.us/img80/2169/dfpicrp1.png
He seems to be fond of this chasm area. I can't see him in there, but I know he is because of the sort bursts of flame, followed by a couple of "The horse <tame> has been struck down!"

http://img88.imageshack.us/img88/6180/dfpicvr1.png
This is where he finally fell. Pretty messy, eh? That smoke didn't clear away until half a year later though.
The hoarde of pets might not show it, but I'm really low on dwarves. From a hefty 71 down to a measly 8. I hope I can still make it.

Plasma

Huh. I'm down to my last five dwarves. One mason and Saffya the farmer, the only two surviving dwarves that did fight the demons; ThomasP the noble and one child, who were smart enough to stay the hell away from that big firey thingy; and CJH.
The funny thing about CJH is that a number of years ago, he got in a fight with an elephant and got his left arm badly damaged. Oddly enough, that injury never recovered, and since then he hasn't left the bed even once. Apparently, he was still waiting for it to heal. However, this does mean he got to sit out the entire fight!
Currently-

http://img89.imageshack.us/img89/3223/dfpiczk7.png
Oh. Now I'm down to only four dwarves. This may be tough, but I should still be able to make it...

http://img99.imageshack.us/img99/9896/dfpicxt9.png
Wait, what? I don't know how he managed to do that. All he had was a scrunched arm, which wasn't bleeding, all the enemies were completely dead, and he never left the bed. But somehow, he was still able to give himself a major injury!

http://img84.imageshack.us/img84/666/dfpicsd6.png
Crud! Now I'm down to just Thomas and the child, and neither of them can work. I just hope that the immigrants arrive soon.

http://img99.imageshack.us/img99/8933/dfpiccf3.png
Oh no! I only have enough foodstuff to last them for about... oh... ten years! I'm dooooooooomed!

Oh yay, the immigrants arrived! Finally, I can get some work done.
http://img88.imageshack.us/img88/221/dfpicml5.png
Wait... what? All I got was three dwarves, none of which can do any work? Crud...

Anyway, I've now managed to reach winter. All my dwarves have managed to survive no problem.Along with those five dwarves, I also have over a hundred animals.
Yeah.
Luckily enough, those animals don't seem to like tresspassing enemies! Those koblods didn't stand a chance...
I'm also passing the time by watching an axedwarf from a travelling caravan chase down about ten fully-grown elephants. It's really funny, because the elephants don't stop and fight back, the just keep on running!

Edit: If anyone wants it, here's the map of my fortress just after I killed the demons:
http://img80.imageshack.us/img80/9799/localmap123107237230xv5.png
Those purple spades are food. As you can see, I have A LOT!
I was lucky in that the demons only managed to destroy my two magma buildings and a couple of doors.
Also, the elephants won.

Finished!

Yeah. I finally got to that Adamantite, the rarest metal in the game! But I managed to make an adamantite helm, a pair of grantlets, and best of all, a well-crafted war hammer! Just to let you know, that thing does six times as much damage as it's iron equivielnt! And it only weighs 5 too.

Edit: Aw carp! It didn't save properly! Fortunately for me, I had a backup save, from just after I made the hammer. Also, as it turns out, humans can't use dwarf armour, so that means that the other stuff I made wouldn't have had any effect. I can still make a shield though...
What are the red #s? I've never had a fortress that deep
Demon pits! There's a few of them, so they're nearly unavoidable, but all the demons pop out of the first one you encounter. The rest are safe after that.
It's also the final obstacle you'll face in Fortress mode. Beyond that is the awesome reward for your troubles, as I said above!

is this game good? is it worth the download and the map loading? it sounds nice but the screenshots look a little... weird.
It's a very good game. But only if you're willing to understand what each symbol means, and if you aren't put off by bad graphics.

Ah, yes, the Too Deep. It's directly related to how much adamantine you mine.

In adventure mode, I have been told a few times about demons who, in a time before time, become encased in adamantine.

Actually, you didn't have a stick. The armoury was at the other side of the fortress.
Trying to punch a fire spirit to death might not have been one of your smarter ideas.

Edit: Finished, again! This time, with a hammer and shield waiting to be collected.
Looks like the ol' Legendary Slaughteronions and allies is back for some more fighting! (Including the swordmaster who lost his primary weapon ages ago, and has since been attacking by bashing enemies with his shield. Yes, even against the last bad-ass demon I fought.)

We are ever closer to release. From the devlog;

I finished up the manual revisions, such as it is and such as they are. Mostly getting rid of obsolete data and adding a page here or there, that sort of thing, but not all that much. The game should be up tomorrow whenever vaguely. It generated 920 creatures in a cave I visited, so I fixed that. It was sorta slow.

Plasma
29 Oct 2007, 19:31
And lo, for I present to you another tale of Plasma Slaughteronions!
This time, I'm heading inwards into my old fortress, ready to kick some demon ass and claim me my gear!

Just so you'll all know where I am, I marked my position with a yellow circle in each of these pictures. The Us are my allies, and the smiley faces are the fortress' old inhabitants.

http://img124.imageshack.us/img124/8412/dfpicrd5.png
This is the enterance to the fortress. As you can see, it's new owner, Demon, has put down a magnificent carpet of dogs and horses in the front. Such style! Such grace!
I said it before and I'll say it again: Demons do not like animals!

http://img218.imageshack.us/img218/3830/dfpicij9.png
This is the main room in the fortress. Used for dining and partying.
Spadge was the king in this fortress. He was the pink smiley. He shall be missed...

http://img88.imageshack.us/img88/7045/dfpicwc2.png
I named my nobles after Team17 staff and User Mods.
These guys got what they deserve for not making a Wii Worms game until next spring!

See that bright red thing? That's the demon! In my home town, that's what we call 'pain incarnated':
http://img219.imageshack.us/img219/1959/dfpicwu6.png
That's why!
He's just like a stork. Only instead of delivering babies, he delivers pain! (Also, he's as big as an elephant, and like a stork at all.)
Man, this thing is really tearing up my allies!

I wasn't kidding about the Pain!

http://img219.imageshack.us/img219/9475/dfpicmx8.png
Did I mention Pain? I don't really know if I mentioned Pain or not.
This demon has a particular strategy in mind: Fight fire with fire! In this case, he's using fire, so he'll follow his attacks with even more fire!

http://img231.imageshack.us/img231/5741/dfpicmq5.png
This Mace Lord (red U) here is the last ally I have left! He's holding out suprisingly well, especially considering he couldn't hold onto his primary weapon.

Actually, the Mace Lord didn't last long after this point. It was me on my own from here on in.
Which called for a new strategy. The most daring, scheming, clever strategy I could think of. I call it:
http://img228.imageshack.us/img228/5383/dfpicim4.png
Run! Run far, far away!

http://img57.imageshack.us/img57/1153/dfpickl2.png
Woah, that was close! I nearly got toasted there. That's enough pain for one day, thank you very much Mr. Demon.

http://img89.imageshack.us/img89/7595/dfpicns9.png
After much, much running, and killing anything that got in my way, I finally made it to the end of the fortress! The glorious Adamantite mines!
See those odd symbols on the gound? Those are weapons and armour! All of them!
I'd be so very happy right now, except for that I keep falling unconcious now and again. And also because I won't be able to make it out without having to fight through pain on the way back!

Also, I had already managed to kill every other monster that was left in the fortress by this point.

http://img148.imageshack.us/img148/6808/dfpicpl2.png
Ah, there we go! The good ol' Adamantite Shield!
It's not actually much use to me right now, considering how my left hand is too burned and bruised to hold it. I can still throw it though. Not that that's going to do very much, on account of me being blind and all.

Now, where the hell is that Adamantite War Hammer?

DOO-DOO-DOOO-DOOOOO!

Finally, after so much time spent, between building my fortress, and training my Hammer Lord, I finally got the item I wanted!
Let the ass-kicking begin!
Or, at least I hope I'm still in good enough shape to beat this demon. I keep on passsing out all the time. This hammer is six times more powerful than my last one, so I better not die here!

After much more running, I made it back to where I started. Now to finish what I started!

http://img99.imageshack.us/img99/4276/dfpicbz4.png
Remember this place? Man, for a creature that can't speak, he sure can get his 300 references out!

This is where it ends, only one of us is going to survive this! It's now or never!

One-hit megakill! Now that's what I'm talkin' about!
Yeah, he really did get smashed bad! Into over a dozen pieces! Man, this hammer is good!

http://img223.imageshack.us/img223/219/dfpiccg7.png
With nothing left to do, I leave the depopulated fortress in peace and head out into the morning sun. (You did notice that night was falling when I encountered the demon the first time, and that a new day had begun when I was finished, didn't you?)
What'll happen next, nobody knows. But with the hammer in my hand and the shield for protection, I know that I'll be ready for whatever fate gives me!

PS: Actually, I didn't just finish it like that. After I defeated the demon, I did one more search of the fortress, and took out any jewels I could get my hands on. I also took the head of the Demon, which I still have as a reminder of my conquest, and the body of King Spadge. I tried to throw the body in the river, and let it flow down itself, but the lack of sight prevented me from being able to aim. Instead, I took it to an ancient runs, and after defeating two skeleton Swordsmasters and a zombie Mace Lord, laid it to rest on the highest point of the site.

I never found ThomasP's body though.
I wonder...

Man, this update KICKS ASS!
Not only is the adventure mode much better now, but the monsters even act normally. Some monsters won't attack you unless you attack them, and some monsters will fight with each other, especially adventuring koblods (which do that now).
Also every koblod has a name now. Sure does make it a lot quicker to fill up your Legends book.
Also also, the koblod areas have changed, now they're open land. That makes it a helluva lot harder to get through, due to enemy archers being able to hit you from afar.

Hm. Guess I better start making a new Hammer Lord...

Edit: Nearly forgot. Pressing Shift-T at any time will bring you back to the Overworld. You don't have to try and walk off the edge anymore.

Oh my sweet jibbering puppies, this just keeps getting better! Check this out! A big ol' waterfall in Zeor Creek!

I'm very irritated. First of all, never trade for money. I don't care how light it is or how easy it is to throw at things. You cannot drop specific numbers of things, which is a necessary part of trading currency, so don't do it until that does become possible.

Secondly, having anything in the yellow now makes you blind to all but the tiles immediately adjacent to you. This basically means you can be blinded by being punched really hard in the arm.

'cept for Melon, who I added to do all the odd jobs that nobody else should bother himself with doing; instead, he went and made himself all important or something. Weird. Just don't go bossing me around, man. This pickaxe means NO. ...Oh, is that a battle axe? Ha ha! Never mind.

Yeah, I'm the all important boss-man! It seems the update definately works as it should ;)

I believe the lag gets higher as you uncover more layers and dig more out. The game doesn't bother working out what's underground until you actually go there, loading it in little "chunks" as you dig.

Personally, I'm finding this new z-axis is making it very difficult for me to decide what I actually want to do, so I'm getting nowhere. Still, the ability to actually live above ground in a tower is awesome.

EDIT: Heh, it seems donations almost tripled after he released this. Also, don't build a well until the next bug fix is out. Then it seems Toady will be taking a week's break to sort out the mass of bug reports that's been flooding in and respond to feedback and all that. It seems he's been really busy.

Thorough exploration of our space reveals that the travel brochure was right and there is plenty of tree to be had. Problem is, it's gonna be a pain to get to. That's 6 levels down from where I took that screenshot. That whole empty space on the left side slopes progressively downwards all the way to the bottom left there.

http://img210.imageshack.us/img210/5126/schleppinhr9.png
I decided we should actually set up shop way down there instead of up top. I created an all-purpose stockpile and turn on everything hauling for everyone, so everybody (except Pigbuster, who's busy doing you-know-what) grabs a bit of the wagon and starts schleppin'. This'll be a little while.

http://img210.imageshack.us/img210/2741/schleppin2gb7.png
I've decided I'll start mining in that little alcove waaaayyyy down here at the bottom. The inaccessibility of it may be a bit of a problem when caravans show up, I dunno, but it could work to our advantage in other ways. Plus it's just pretty cool. And there's exposed native silver nearby.

My first fortress (I'm using it as a test) is over-run with limestone. In a way, that's great! I can make no end of steel. However, it's also bad, as I can't make stuff out of it and I'm not next to a volcano so I'm not going to get any magma. (I'm aware I can allow them to use limestone for normal production but I'll wait untill it's coming out of my ears before I do that.)

I don't know, I haven't tried it out. I was too busy with The Simpsons Video Game (which is awesome, by the way).
But yes, I would presume so. For example, only the humans and dwarves have 'pick axe' listed as one of their tools, the others dont. But I don't know is they still do in the actual game though. Also, I'm pretty sure armour made by a race can only be used by members of their race.

If anyone wants to try it out for themselves, go into [dwarf fortress directory]\raw\entity_default. Highlight [CIV_CONTROLLABLE] from the Dwarf entry and cut-paste it the line before where it says [CREATURE:X].

For example, the start of the human entry would look like this: [PLAINS_SETTLEMENTS]
[INDIV_CONTROLLABLE]
[CIV_CONTROLLABLE]
[CREATURE:HUMAN]

Also, if you pasted that tag into multiple entries, then it chooses one at random for you.

Well, this time I decided to try out a Goblin fortress.
Sooo... turns out they are different after all! Although you can still buy and use picks, Goblins can't have pets or even buy seeds. And they don't need constant alcohol like Dwarves do. (they also seem to be hesitant towards chopping down trees, which is a little annoying)
Also, peasants and miners are both grey, so all my dwarves look the same for now.

If you haven't already noticed, for this Goblin fortress I named all the characters variations of other forumers. See if you can figure out what anme was based on whom. (Jackime might be hard though!)
And yes, I did correct the spelling mistake in Professor.

I'm totally lovin' the Z-Axis.

Okay, so I end up putting my settlement on the middle of a mountain. Thing is, there's no wood up there at all, and without wood I can't make any beds.
I notice that there's a bunch of trees farther down the mountain, so from the settlement I dig down to that level and dig a tunnel all the way to the trees. Zeor takes on the outer side of the tunnel while Pikkul digs from the inside.
http://img265.imageshack.us/img265/4570/picture18dj8.png

Unfortunately, I rather rushed my slope creation a bit, and it seems that the path finding is messed up, so Pikkul got stuck down there. Not only that, but he became thirsty. So thirsty, in fact, that he ran into a glitch and spammed my message center constantly about it.
http://img209.imageshack.us/img209/7008/picture20dp5.png
I had to disable the food supplies just to get him to shut up and stop lagging the game. :p

So it was a race against time to dig the tunnel so Pikkul could get a drink. Once the tunnel was dug, he ran past all of the lakes and all the way to the settlement and its alcohol. Thing is, I hadn't enabled the food again yet, so he had to run all the way BACK to the lake to get a drink.

They're probably thinking the same thing, since they don't use it at all. :p
The actual base is really far away, so I thought it would be good to keep the woodcutters indoors and away from any wild animals that might be running about.

Also, I totally bungled up the floodgate farm, since apparently the water doesn't drain by itself. I think you have to install a grate or something now.

And I decided to wait on seeing what would change with the caravan, only to find out that it's more or less the same as before. So I didn't make any crafts, and all I got was 5 measly plump helmets by selling my empty food barrels.

And lo', for Andrew is now a legendary carpenter! And he gets his own casket that he's going to be carrying around for the next five years too!
also around the same time, Pikkul became a legendary miner too. And Robowurmz is trying to take Zeor's place as the second miner, but he's so very very slow in comparison...

I think you have to press "r" to request someone go to the Depot, but I'm not that sure. It sounds like your dwarves are rather busy, anyway.
Correct! You have to make sure thhat in the trade depot menu thing you had there, it said 'Trader requested at depot'.

Also, you porbably should've changed the trader guy to someone closer to the depot.

Actually, come to think of it, Zeor was the only dwarf so far to even get injured. Not even the hunting dog got a scratch on him.

I probably goofed up there on my instructions for the shortcut staircase from the entrance to the top of the plateau.

Designate a down staircase on the top level, then go down one level and build an up staircase in the same spot. You can also build a staircase if you need it on a mined out square. I've found cross-staircases can be built by building both stair types on the same square. BONUS.
The only way to destroy a designated down staircase is to build a floor on top of it, apparently.
Also, floorhatches are basically doors that go on the floor, so they can be built between stairways (place them from above, I think).

Never go to sleep in adventure mode, as it currently doesn't do anything useful.
The pick up button also sets fire to trees rather oddly. It'll do this automatically if there's nothing to pick up.
You can eat/drink by pressing 'e'. As long as you don't choose "Play Now!", you'll start with food and drink in your backpack.
This game doesn't have a learning curve as such, it's more like a learning wall. In fortress mode, I advise you learn how to dig into the mountain and cut trees by designation things first, then build a farm and build a carpenter's workshop and make some beds and bedrooms. Then just slowly start trying more things. You'll fail. Often. But it's still good fun.

hey.. wait... how do you play the game when it consists of only symbols??? oh so confusing!

Imagination is the key. Once you play it, you quickly learn what looks like what. It's usually pretty obvious too, trees usually look like trees for example.

You don't play the game online, but you download it online, from here:

After you press G, be careful to read what the options say. If one of them says 'pick up X', then that's a good thing. If it says 'incinerate X', then that's a bad thing (exceptions being made if X is part of an Elven settlement.

Edit: A platnium ewapon rack, with iron spikes! He's going around holding it in one hand, and it weighs 5350! Ironically, it's called "The Divine Quickness". ¬.¬

Why did I make Agent Luke my outpost broker? Instead of getting to trading, he's gone out fishing for the day. Typical.
And Zeor finally got better! Now he can continue hunting... gee, not a very quick learner, is he?
And I made loads of iron picks, because I had too many people not expanding stuff. I made two carpenter's and mason's workshops too.

My mind is wired strangely. I pick up the abstract and miss the obvious.

Best things to do in a fortress;
No. 1;

Build a channel from the surface to about 10 floors down. Then, at the top, use the Zones command to make it a Pit/Pond and a Garbage Area. Then, assign all your useless animals to it.

Watch them plummet and SPLAT at the bottom. And, before I forget, yell "THIS IS SPARTA!!!" at the top of your voice!

I declare that the military screen is an utter nightmare.
I wind up activating and deactivating squads 500 times before I get what I want, and every change you make is registered in the world. That means that it doesn't just apply the final result, but every decision. That dwarf you switch around 50 times is going to be "annoyed with the draft" 50 times, driving him to suicide.
[EDIT]I looked it up so now I know how it's supposed to work, at least. We'll see if it's still confusing, though.

And implement a "Dwarves only equip equipment in stock at the fortress" option please.

I'll post my Fortress later, but I did manage to make two more towers (white and dark grey) and am working on three more (light grey, brown, and red).

Oh, I forgot to say:
Bonz went insane. Thomas took over as mayor.

Preasure took over from him, which is nice, as he was already legendary!

Deadcode got possessed.
He claimed a mechanic's workshop.
He came out later with an artifact.
It was a mechanism.
It was made using one turtle shell and three platinum nuggets.
It is worth of 289,200 monies!
So, if you don't have a Hoardmaster in your list of nobles, then that thing alone is more valuable than your entire civization!
(Bizarrely enough, Deadcode is not legendary)

My artifacts now have a total worth of 537,600, and my fortress is now worth 1,189,730? monies. For those who don't know, that question mark means that the number is too high to be able to count accurately, and is just an approximation.

Not much to see here, just part of my overflow stone stockpile and a channel I built to 'see if I can'. It would appear I can.

http://img89.imageshack.us/img89/3402/autumn1level1qc3.png
Still not much to see, just that channel from water level and a short corridor entrance to my base. In the future I intend fill this corridor with traps or (ideally) be able to flood it when necessary, like so. (http://dwarf.lendemaindeveille.com/index.php/Design_strategies#Flooded_Entrance)

http://img89.imageshack.us/img89/7951/autumn1level2xz8.png
Ok, here is the main level of my fortress with all my current workshops. Starting from top-left is my trade depot (just off-screen is a bunch of melancholy merchants and some blood stains) as well as a smelter and wood furnace. Top-right is my dining hall (in progress). Centre-left there are four workshops (clockwise from top-left: future site of metalsmith's forge, mason's workshop, carpentry, still). Centre right there are another four workshops (again, clockwise from top-left: fishery, kitchen, mechanic's, craftsdwarves). Bottom-left is a furniture stockpile and bottom-right is a finished goods stockpile.

http://img88.imageshack.us/img88/6017/autumn1level3sh9.png
Yay! Stockpiles! Each stockpile fills two room, so clockwise from top-left we have stone, food, refuse, wood. The X on the left is a double stairway which is unaccesible from this level. Btw, that red M in my refuse is that psycho Muskox that was killed by a merchant when I locked them in a room together.

http://img88.imageshack.us/img88/9953/autumn1level4rr5.png
Finally, the bedrooms. As you can see not directly below the stockrooms as I thought it might be quiter here. Currently 1 room each plus an office for the leader: 'Doc' (guess what the others are called, indeed, I suck at the naming).

And just after I took these... WINTER ARRIVED! Bah! But at least this time I am in a better position to survive (I think)...

No room for emoticon-abuse, bah

They shouldn't do that, should they?

I think you should make a path from the double stairway to the stockpiles. Your fortress is quite vertical, so it should be easy to make everything really accessible, and accessibility is good, usually.

The trade depot should probably be outside, since there's no way a human caravan is going to get down to the one you have now. As long as you're quick at moving goods to and fro, a thief won't be able to steal anything.

Essentially, I totally failed because most of the recruits were back at the fort eating while the others got themselves annihilated by the goblins. The fact that none of them were proficient marksdwarves also added to this.
Then I drafted (tried to, anyway) every single dwarf behind Zero, who bravely led the battle against the goblins!!!... by himself. Needless to say, I failed totally to bust up the goblins' obnoxious loitering.
